Re: 2012 Elections Pt II: Bachmann Turned Me Into a Newt! A Newt?

speaking as a lifelong conservative, the best thing for the country at this point is just to cancel the election and reschedule it for 2016. "There is no viable alternative to President Obama. Therefore he gets to keep the job for 4 more years." Think of the hassles and money we could save for the same outcome.

As a lifelong conservative, you must have been continually depressed by our politics since about 1956. ;)

LOL. I'd pay to see Mitt Romney read this post.

Dunno. Eisenhower was pretty good. Not that that's going to give you too many years!

Re: 2012 Elections Pt II: Bachmann Turned Me Into a Newt! A Newt?

So, he's continuing his stance that the bailout was bad and he's doing it in Michigan? Doesn't he need to win Michigan to win the nomination and for that matter the election?

Well, the auto bailout is viewed unfavorably by 62% of MI Republicans, so doubling down on it is not necessarily bad strategy for the primary. As for needing Michigan to win the election, that's not really accurate either. If Michigan is close on election night, the election has probably been decided elsewhere.

Also, worth noting that although maybe it's seen a subsequent popularity boost (I honestly have not seen any recent national polling), the bailout was pretty ****ed unpopular . I don't exactly get the "Lol, he's throwing away Michigan" line of thinking when, 1) the GOP wasn't winning Michigan anyway, and 2) Opposing the bailout might still play pretty darn well in other, swingy, regions.

Sure, but all that taps is the hard right wingers who believe that any government investment in anything is bad. You could cite a 5000% return on that investment and they'd tell you Satan was involved somehow.

60% of the country is "hard right wingers"? That's the number opposed to the bailout in the poll I cited. (Again, I make no claims as to whether it's still that unpopular).

Among independents in a different poll, it was opposed 57/41. That's a bit more than unpopularity with "hard right wingers", one would think.

Yes, but since it worked (Eminem and Clint told me so) it's slightly more popular now.

Oh, and by the way, he was wrong.

The auto industry did not collapse.

In fact, reports show the bailouts saved an estimated 1.5 million jobs. The auto industry is expected to grow by 28% by 2015, with the Big Three set to hire about 33,000 people in Michigan alone. And while Ford did not participate in the bailout, G.M. did, and was able to regain its place as the top automaker in the world.

Chrysler also took part and recorded its first annual net profit since 1997, and announced plans to invest $500 million in an assembly plant in nearby Toledo, Ohio, adding an entire second shift of jobs over the course of the year.

Couple all that with 23 consecutive months of job growth across the nation and what you have is good news for Michigan and choppy political waters for Romney.

Is it though? I honestly don't know. I'd love to see some polls.

TARP "worked" too, but I doubt it's popular now. Ditto the stimulus.

Birth control is going to be a campaign issue? It's like Christmas everyday for Democrats.

"You've confused a war on your religion with not always getting everything you want."

Finally got to watch those and just wanted to say outstanding. I didn't realize that Hannity had put together a panel discussion on contraception that did not include one female. Amazing.

Re: 2012 Elections Pt II: Bachmann Turned Me Into a Newt! A Newt?

For all you Mainers out there, I saw an article that the state GOP is being pressured to recalculate the caucus votes, since they excluded a Ron Paul stronghold country from the final tally as well as some other places

Just heard about this....should be a big deal.

Romney won by 194 votes over Paul. Three counties were not counted. I believe one because there was a big storm (which didn't actually happen) whereas 4 years ago, its votes were accepted even though they had 8 inches. Another for which there is no explanation. And I do believe that Washington county ended up with zero votes...was the only county in Maine to go for Paul 4 years ago.

If this only happened once, you could chock it up to the state. But mysteriously Romney won Iowa, got all the buzz...and after Iowa was in the rearview mirror, suddenly it was announced that actually Santorum won. It does appear that some greater GOP powers out there are attempting to rig results.

Paul got 8 votes out of Washington County in 2008. They only had 113 total. I don't think this is going to improve his odds.

They couldn't find another Megyn Kelly look alike who could read a script.

Paul still plans on getting most of the delegates from Maine, and I believe Washington County will be able to choose delegates for the state convention even though their caucus was delayed due to weather. As far as I know, this just affects the presidential preference straw poll the GOP also does in Maine. The GOP caucus in Maine is weird (I've only participated in the Democrat caucus, and that was once...). They have a straw poll, and then they elect delegates for the state convention. In Portland, for example, the agenda had the election of the delegates first, followed by the straw poll. Many people just want to vote in the poll and leave, and someone made a motion that they reverse the order. It passed overwhelmingly -- the people that just wanted to vote and leave loved it because they got two hours of their life back, and the Ron Paul supporters loved it because they cared more about winning the most delegates and not the straw poll. They had a strategy, including passing out sheets of papers with names of people running for the delegate seats that supported Ron Paul. The Romney folks had no strategy, and did not have as many supporters that were enthusiastic enough to spend two hours electing delegates. I read one article that covered the Portland caucus and when the potential delegates each had a chance to speak for a minute or two almost all said they were Ron Paul supporters. Of course, it turns out there may have been voter fraud so Portland's delegates might not get to take part in the state convention. Everyone had to turn in a card when they got the ballot to select their 70+ delegates and they ended up with about 15 more ballots than cards (the Ron Paul folks think this is a conspiracy by the Romney team of course).

Oh dear. Such violent rhetoric.

I find that hard to believe. Not the order of events, but that there are any Republicans in Portland.

You have to be seriously 'principalled' in order to be for the dangerous 'let the auto industry fail' in times of a major crisis...but how 'principalled' do you have to be for 'letting the auto industry fail' when its going to bankrupt your entire neighborhood?

Repubs tend to be very principled when it comes to other people's suffering. ;)

In other news, this was probably inevitable.
