Statements like that crack me up. It's a blatant lie and falsehood that this law imposes on religious freedom.
It's like the argument that it's an attack on religion to stop kids from beating up gays. But that stuff plays in a lot of places.

OTOH, Washington is about to become the seventh state with gay marriage. Liberty and tolerance advance, ever so slightly, and despite the manic anger of the bigots left behind. This too shall pass.

It's weird. I mean, he's never capitulated like this before.

LOL. :)

It is funny, though, that he kneecaps the big CPAC tantrum. I suppose they can whine about death panels or something substantial now.

Re: 2012 Elections Pt II: Bachmann Turned Me Into a Newt! A Newt?

Completely agree. I wish Obama could have stood his ground, but I understand why it was a political loser for him. :(

I knew it would be. I seem to understand the electorate better than the Obama administration does.

It would be so much easier if we joined the rest of the industrialized world and had single-payer health care it wouldn't be an issue.

With the topsy turvy GOP race, the polls are all over the board.

Obama is up. Santorum is up but still lags Romney. Romney is down pretty big to Obama (even on Rasmussen). Obama looks stronger in VA and even NC. Romney and even Santorum are stronger than Obama in PA. Cats and Dogs still living together.

Well, Obama steps up to be the bigger man.

"The source, who asked for anonymity because the president has yet to make an announcement on the decision, bristled at the suggestion that the new plan was a compromise."

You're right - it's a not a compromise. It's complete capitulation.

Oh and BTW, it's a good thing. It's how Washington needs to be run.

I'll summarize my thoughts on this whole issue with a big **** you to the religious. Although that is my general response to the religious anyways. But in this particular case the fact that they have any kind of traction is particularly galling.

That doesn't take much. Why Obama would pick a fight with the Catholic Church to cater to some of his more radical supporters in an election year just doesn't make sense. But then again, he's usually good at sliding these things through with the media providing little or no coverage of what's going on. Good on the Catholics for standing up to him this time. Of course even this compromise is hardly that, but a slight accomodation at best. But the media will fall all over themselves patting Obama on the back as they usually do.

Radical?

The funny thing is contraceptives are used for more than just birth control. The pill especially has many other health benefits and preventative care uses. It's use saves health care costs. That's the number one reason it was in the bill. I heard this morning that in some cases women who are not provided this preventative care option in the their Health Benefits are paying upwards of 100 dollars a month out of pocket. Many of those folks I would not consider "well to do".

There's nothing radical going on here. And there is no First Amendment issue. In fact many states already require this coverage. This was just a big slab of Red Meat for the Catholic Church and the conservative electorate ate it up. Watching Fox News report on this issue the last few days has been hysterical.

Blech. What profiteth a man if he gain the whole world but lose his soul, Barry. :(
Why Kepler, it profits a man nothing to give his soul for the whole world... but for Wales?

Well, from what I'm reading, they're just going straight to the insurance companies and have them send the info/coverage to the women. The companies will do this, because it's cheaper to cover a daily pill or a once every 3-6 months shot than 9 months of neo-natal hospital visit. So if the Republicans want to make an issue of it now, they're going to have to come out from under the "religious liberty" umbrella and play in the muck and flat out say women don't deserve birth control.

Re: 2012 Elections Pt II: Bachmann Turned Me Into a Newt! A Newt?

Pope Pius XII to the seminarians @ the North American College:

...Those words, beloved sons, recall another fact one dare not forget. We belong to the Church militant ; and she is militant because on earth the powers of darkness are ever restless to encompass her destruction. Not only in the far-off centuries of the early Church, but down through the ages and in this our day, the enemies of God and Christian civilization make bold to attack the Creator’s supreme dominion and sacrosanct human rights. No rank of the clergy is spared ; and the faithful—their number is legion—inspired by the valiant endurance of their shepherds and fathers in Christ, stand firm, ready to suffer and die, as the martyrs of old, for the one true Faith taught by Jesus Christ. Into that militia you seek to be admitted as leaders...

Your and my understanding of the health benefits and risks of contraceptives are quite different. I'll leave it at that. But to ram this down peoples' throats that they have to provide it free is radical, especially in like of how other very basic health care staples aren't free. Basically nothing else in healthcare is free. You pay at least a copay if not more for basic things like a physical, teeth checkup, etc. But, this is free, when some people object to it. Yup, you and your radical Obama is at it again under the guise of moderation that many people are fooled by.

They can start suffering and dying anytime now.
They are in many parts of the world. Not that most people seem to notice or care.

Go read the headlines about the latest slaughter of Christians in Nigeria for example, where one of the major Muslim groups openly touts that it's goal is to kill every Christian in Nigeria. But, hey, we're just whiners.

Just like people in this country who argue for civil rights...whining.

Re: 2012 Elections Pt II: Bachmann Turned Me Into a Newt! A Newt?

I fail to see how this changes anything, but maybe that's the point. So the insurance company handles the coverage instead of the church for employees using birth control? Works for me.

Oh, and Bob, feel free to have your fellow knucks' run on an anti-contraceptive platform this year. As I've said before, that will leave them with a constituency of senior citizens and socially awkward people who haven't gotten laid in decades. Which, when you think about it, sounds about right. :D

A lot of us notice and care. It was the reason America was founded with a separation of church and state in the first place -- the wholesale slaughters of the 16th and 17th centuries in divided Christian Europe. When a religion gains the tools of coercion, it uses them. The solution is to let people have their freedom of individual conscience but not let them impose on others who differ from them. And that's all liberals are asking for. Don't want an abortion? Don't have one.

Really? And I suppose anyone who comes to a different conclusion is stupid. No?

Don't want a murder, don't do one. Oh, wait, but someone might do it to you.

On your freedom of conscience point, tell that to your buddy Obama as he goes after the Catholics.
