Kepler

Except that the "powerful elite" in Congress are in safe seats and don't leave until they die, retire, or go to prison.

To use the SEC analogy (again!) - when the elite get caught, some back bencher loses an election.

All of the scheming to get rid of Obama via a bad economy sounds fine in theory, but if the public continues to blame the GOP more than they blame him, or to look at it another way dislikes their remedy (the Ryan plan for example) it could just as easily backfire. What Boehner needs to do is essentually pull a Gingrich (funny to say that now) whereby he uses the threat of an irrational freshman caucus during negotiations, but ultimately cuts a deal that walks the fine line between public approval and base supporter approval. Gingrich managed to do this and still hang onto the House despite Clinton's re-election. A lot of that was because things started to get better economically. The problem I see for the Boner is while Gingrich was widely credited as the architect for their Congressional Majority, Boehner seems to be considered just along for the ride and nobody owes a debt to him in winning their seats.

What I have seen floated makes sense, which is that both sides will cut the amount they're already in agreement with ($1T I believe) to raise the debt ceiling until after the 2012 elections. I can easily see that being the last minute deal that gets agreed upon (even though they would have come to agreement on the terms a month earlier).

Which provides a more accurate portrayal of Paul Revere: Longfellow or Sarah Palin?

Edit: I liked the tweet I got this morning that you shouldn't get to comment on how evil we are and how we lack values here in "Fake America" and then prance along the Freedom Trail as you <del>campaign</del> take the family on a corporate-paid vacation.

Those Wisconsin recalls will actually probably be 2011 elections (with Walker in 2012), but apparently firing up Wisconsin Unions wasn't enough. Now they intend on ****ing off everyone else left in Wisconsin by attacking microbreweries

That ain't right.

Re: 2012 Elections Part I: All Politics is Yokel

It's going to be kind of surreal to see the Republican nominee chanting "It's the economy stupid," while the Democrat nominee capmapigns on killing Al Qaeda.

It used to be public polling showed Dem advantages in handling the economy and GOP advantages in the GWOT. They haven't reversed, but they've probably eroded down to where they're within the MOE.

Some 538-like site did an interesting analysis recently where they plotted right/wrong direction and Obama's job approval and the result was zero correlation. This is in really sharp contrast to Carter and Bush Sr. who both sunk with the econ indicators. A large part of this is that the dittoheads with Obama Derangement Syndrome hated him right from the beginning; even if they've been told to double-dare hate him now it's the same score.

Interesting ad targeted to Paul Ryan's district.

Santorum announced today.

Maybe its just me, but I kinda don't like the announcement on the D-Day anniversary. Maybe he could have given it an extra day?

What Obama is benefitting from, which Carter for example did not, is a GOP House majority to use as a foil. Simply put people don't like the GOP's plans now that they (to their credit) have voted on them. So you're now given a choice instead of a referrendum. Were the GOP still in the minority that wouldn't be the case. I doubt whoever the GOP nominee is will be able to get through the primaries without endorsing the Ryan plan. A guy like Romney will have to in order to burnish his right wing credentials. If he doesn't, one of the other two (Huntsman or Pawlenty) will in order to draw a contrast with him. They get to carry that into the general election for better or for worse.

Yep. People don't hate the presidency, per se, but they hate Congress with the fire of a thousand suns (particularly the House, which is funny since it means people hate themselves -- or anyway they hate everybody but themselves).

Reagan and Clinton won their elections, Carter and Bush Sr. didn't just lose them. The GOP nominee is going to have to be able to inspire people like they did, but paradoxically it seems like their serious candidates (Romney, TPaw, Huntsman) are workaday head-down types while their "inspiring" candidates (Bachmann, Santorum, Palin if she gets in) are dumber than a box of hammers.

Paul's the exception, but the RNC would rather lose the general election than see him nominated. Lockheed-Martin didn't buy a political party just to see its nominee get up and say "war is a racket, I'm closing all our OCONUS bases." That'll get a man Book Depositoried.

I agree with your larger point that a Paul presidency would not be good for Lockheed. However, closing OCONUS bases would probably be the biggest boon for them in a generation - if we weren't there to protect those countries, foreign military sales of F-35s would increase dramatically.

"America was a much better country before 1965"

Gee...I wonder what event he is referring to.

Awesome. He's perfect for the Tea Party then. They've got one strong candidate in the field now and two in the wings with America just waiting with baited breath for them to jump in. Go Tea Party.

I'm sure liberals said the same thing about these guys.

No thank you. Some things are way too dangerous to play with. Populism plus corporate control equals nothing good.

I'm sure he's just an Original Six fan.

To be fair, he could also be referring to

The death of Winston Churchill
The assassination of Malcolm X
Canada gets a new flag
Goldie, the London Zoo's eagle, is free for 12 days before being recaptured
The Astrodome opens in Houston
West Germany and Israel established diplomatic relations
The "phantom punch"
Bob Dylan "goes electric" at the Newport Jazz Festival
The Beatles played at Shea Stadium
Cigarette ads are banned on British TV
Koufax pitched a perfect game
Tom & Jerry and Days of Our Lives debut
The IOC admits East Germany
The World's Fair at Flushing Meadows is a financial disaster
The Vatican decided that not all Jews are guilty of killing Christ
Tokyo officially becomes the largest city in the world, replacing New York City

So maybe he's just not a fan of Tom & Jerry, is a big Sonny Liston supporter, prefers acoustic guitar or thinks every Jew should be held accountable for Christ's death.

May have been a Yankees fan?

Now if he's talking about church attendance, school behavior, gas wars, quality TV, and no checking in the offensive zone, he may be onto something.
