Re: 2012 Elections in 3-D!

That pesky First Amendment, am I right?
This is probably a stupid question but when is that not protected if something is presented as truth and is actually fiction? In the UK Fox is not accorded the protection of a news organization because they were judged not to qualify (at least the last I heard). Are 'News' organizations held to certain standards they have to meet under the law here?

Fox actually argued in court that their news doesn't need to be true. And they won.

Your nightly news can report the sun rises in the west and the only thing you can do is turn the channel. Of course, if every station reports the sun rises in the west, turning the channel loses its efficacy.

Re: 2012 Elections in 3-D!

Survey USA (very highly ranked in Silver's ratings) poll of Washington state. Question 10:

"Was the United States right? ... Or wrong? ... to spend money to bail out U.S. auto makers?

Right: 36%
Wrong: 47%

If that's how it's viewed in Washington, I'm guessing Romney isn't too worried.

You dont think people of Michigan might not think about it just a little differently? Really?

Hoo boy.

For about the thousandth time, I've already conceded Romney's opposition to the bailout will cost him Michigan, though I don't think he was going to fight too hard there anyways. My point was never about that.

It was always about the contention that being anti-bailout would hurt him more broadly. A contention for which I don't think there's much to back it up, as this poll seems to show, at least in one state.

Edit: Although there are questions about the sample...

Depends -- I wish they still have the "Favorite Son" on the primary ballot. Then your state's political boss/leader could cast his votes at the convention for the candidate who best represents the state's interests (read delivers the most pork).

I would like to see one brokered convention in my life, it would add a little more excitement. I liked reading about the old ones where delegates for a candidate would start impromptu parades on the convention floor to gin up enthusiasm for their candidate. If there's one thing that led to the decline of this country, it's the lack of impromptu parades.

I think both conventions have banned floor "demonstrations". What I want to see are the famous "floor fights" between candidate supporters.

A "floor fight" at the GOP Convention might involve more than words or signs...

At any convention, it has been more than signs. I think we had a good one in 1968 in Chicago and in 1964 in San Francisco.

If he wasn't an alien....

Re: 2012 Elections in 3-D!

NPR is going on and on about how Romney is trailing in MI. I don't think he'll actually lose it; heard some very effective radio ads yesterday that left me wondering how anyone could vote for Santorum. What bugs me, especially about NPR, is the reference to MI as "Romney's home state". He may have been born here, but nobody knows or cares. He was governor of another state, spent his adult life out east. Calling his old man a popular governor is like saying Obama will win on Calvin Coolidge's coattails. Irrelevant.
Also, as ever, the City of Detroit would support bailouts anywhere, anytime, anyplace; while in most of the state there's a good number of people that have sworn off GM for life. It's not an issue that will change anyone's mind. In the general election, the state has always tilted to Detroit and the Dems. Detroit probably still has more shrinking to do before this will ever change for national elections/ although in the state election we elected a Repub governor.

NPR's political coverage hasn't been very good all year. The whole George Romney thing is indeed ludicrious. To remember the guy you'd have to be well into your 50's and to have voted for him you'd be in your 60's. Much like CT was going for Bush because his grandfather was a Senator there, its time to put this storyline out to pasture. Win or lose, Romney's results in MI will have precious little to do with his father's time in office.

So, you'd have to be a baby boomer? Well, in that case you run the country as it is and decide all the candidates. I think it's plenty relevant.

Also no beatings in the well of the Senate.

TV made the conventions no fun -- now they are just sanitized corporate ads where everything but the D/R logo is the same. I'm sure the conference rooms where the platform is hammered out, and where cameras are not allowed, are still a riot.

I'm still amazed that Frothy got this far.
Me too. Apparently he comes across very well in his public appearances. Basically, he's good at being a politician. Add in that he is holding firmly to a set of extreme philosophical beliefs in the face of their overwhelming unpopularity and I am impressed by the guy. I don't want him anywhere near a position of power greater than a town clerk, but he is the sort of candidate the system produces at its best: principled and courageous. His Thomistic reactionary bias is an unfortunate accident, but for goodness' sake at least it is sincere.

Santorum is the opposite of Romney: the more people see him, the more they like him.
