2012 East Regional: Union, Miami, Lowell, Michigan State

Re: 2012 East Regional: Union, Miami, Lowell, Michigan State

Barnum Publick House just opened and is actually pretty classy. Bridgeport on the rise!:

It sounds counterintuitive to say it, but there are actually plenty of quality eating establishments in downtown Bridgeport these days.

As a Lowell fan, would love to hear from the Miami folks about what to expect from your club...

Just as a heads up to those not familiar with Bridgeport, DEFINITELY not the place you want to be stumbling around drunk at 2 in the morning. Don't know where the arena is, but there are some real tough areas down there, so be aware.

That looked pretty good... would like it if their meal options had a bit more range... but I think its suitable for a takeover.

For Friday night at least, the school is looking for a place to put together something for all of us.

I had never heard of the place, good brunch review on Yelp, I am intrigued by the bottomless bloody mary bar. The nice about not having a horse in the race is that I can wander to the different teams home bars:D

The arena is sandwiched between downtown/I-95 and some power plant/smokestack structure. Man, does it look UGLY there! Arena/ballpark complex looks nice though.

I'm sure that Lowell fans will feel right at home. ;)

Good point, but all kidding aside, Bridgeport makes Lowell look like Chestnut Hill.

2nd leading goal scorer in the country in Reilly Smith. 15-5-0 since the New Year. Up until this past weekend Had not given up an even strength goal in the previous 7 games. Anemic powerplay. Lots of size and speed, love to get pucks deep and wear down other teams. Very physical, sometimes to a fault (see WMU semifinal game)

How about UML? What can the redhawks expect?

Lowell regularly played 13/14 freshmen and sophomores a night. We (the fans) are going through a dream season recovering from 5 wins last season to 23 (so far) this season. Lowell's two leading scorers are Scott Wilson (freshman) and Riley Wetmore (Junior) with 37 points each. The scoring overall though was very spread out over the team, 12 players with at least 10 points, 8 with more than 20 points. 7 of the top 10 scorers for the River Hawks are underclassmen. Wilson won the Rookie of the Year in Hockey East, while the Lowell coach (an alum) won Coach of the Year.

The defense and the goaltending are the key components that have changed from last year though. Sophomore Doug Carr finished the season with a 2.08 GAA, and a 93% save rate. Those numbers were actually made worse by two games late in the season where he gave up a few goals. Carr wound up Second Team All-Hockey East, along with being the runner up to the Hockey East Player of the Year. Defense has been solid with sophomore Chad Ruhwedel, who's one of the best in HE and two very good freshmen defense Zach Kamrass and Jake Suter, who've helped solidify the defensive issues.

This team hit a slump towards the end of the year, including losing 2 of 3 to Providence at home in the playoffs. They seemed tired, so we're hoping that that the playoff loss might have been a benefit somehow.

Re: 2012 East Regional: Union, Miami, Lowell, Michigan State

This MSU team has the ability to be world beaters, or just come out flat and get blown out. Unfortunately, the latter has been true when given a break. They nearly won the GLI after a long break but did not play paticulary well in either game, and after another break got blown out by Miami. Then in the CCHA playoffs after a week off they were once again blown out by Miami. I don't like us having a week off, but it's good to be in the tournament to have the chance to rebound from that terrible performance in Oxford.

Re: 2012 East Regional: Union, Miami, Lowell, Michigan State

Miami has a shot since Lowell is not actuallly from "Boston". I think Miami beats Lowell and loses to Union in the regional final. Union is very good.

Ha! Miami is glad they don't have to play a team from Boston. They must have nightmares about 2009. BC has also done a number on Miami in the NCAAs.

Yes. And 2010 (Detroit), 2008 (BC uses the timeout to score 3 quick goals and win in OT), 2007, 2006....

With having just played two games in what, three weeks, they should certainly be healthy and rested. I expect the Union/Sparty game to be very competitive. Will be interesting to see what Union has for a Big 10 team.
