2012 D2 Football thread: Every day I'm shuffling!!!

Re: 2012 D2 Football thread: Every day I'm shuffling!!!

Cold, wet, rainy, sleet, hail, and wind here in allendale. GVSU leads NMU 27-10 at the half, and the NMU band is here as well. Today would have been a good day to be up at the dome.

You're getting old.... Man up :p

Hmm...I guess when you get paid to play, you get perks like travel. :p

That last-second win over Northwood was not the first in recent memory. I seem to recall a 50-something yard field goal back in 2008 that won the game for Tech.

SR 3 is sure brutally tough! 4 of the top 5 nationally ranked teams are in the SR (including my UMD Bulldogs!) and 5 of the top 7. Pittsburg State is ranked 7th nationally and 6th in the region. Missouri Western is ranked 13th nationally, but as it stands, wouldn't even make the playoffs. And 7-0 Emporia State is 9th in SR3 rankings. Wow! Kinda wish they'd left the NSIC in a different region the way it used to be.

And it doesn't help matters any that the NSIC and MIAA don't have any crossover games or even opponents in common with each other. I really do think that they need to make it a rule that you can only play 10 league games a year, and that if you want an eleventh, it has to be a non-con foe. There's plenty of them to be found if you schedule them right.

Emporia State's win against Missouri Western should shake things up a little, though not good news for the Gorillas getting into the playoffs. Sounds like the Northern Sun has a good shot at getting three in if they all win out.

With Western's loss, despite the weak schedule we have, if we win out we should be be #1 in the region now right? (Assuming we win out)

From what I've gathered over at D2Football, NW Mo St. still has the inside track for the No 1 seed in the SR. The MoWest loss does make it much more likely that SCSU will sneak into the playoffs, however.

I love that a one loss team, who's loss is to another playoff team on the road, would be a team that "sneaks in."

Such is the brutal nature of Section 3, where the 6th ranked team nationally, Pittsburg State, may not even make the playoffs. St. Cloud certainly will belong in the playoffs if they win out, but it's very possible they'd just shade the Gorillas out of the last playoff spot.

Re: 2012 D2 Football thread: Every day I'm shuffling!!!

I'm confused how it's so difficult to lock in a rivalry game for each NSIC team each year. I'd really like to see us okay SCSU every year.

I didn't mean "sneak in" as derogatory, SCSU absolutely deserves to be a playoff team if they win out, but the numbers weren't looking like they'd fall in their favor. Now it looks much more likely that the numbers will fall in SCSU's favor, and will work against Pitt State, who is ranked #6 in national human polls and who's only loss is to regional #1 NW Mo St. at Arrowhead Stadium.

NSIC scheduling frustrates many, particularly because there are no Non-Conference games. It would be nice if they could protect some rivalries also, like SCSU-Mankato. From what I can tell, since Sioux Falls and Minot State were officially added in 2012 to make a 16 team conference the scheduling goes as follows:

Play all teams in your division, play four from the other division. The division are broken down in what seems to be permanent groups of four, which are (The names of the groups are my names, they don't have official names):

North 1: UMD, Northern, Mary, Crookston
12-12

Played

South 1: Mankato, Upper Iowa, Sioux Falls, Wayne

and

North 2: St. Cloud, Bemidji, Moorhead, Minot

Played

South 2: Winona, Concordia, Augustana, Southwest

The inter-divisional groups will switch back and forth every year, so next season North 1 will play South 2 and North 2 will play South 1.

Eh, I still believe that sooner or later, the NSIC is going to end up breaking up because of that. Too many schools in the conference, and then there's some schools who just field a team in some sports, and then there are those who are competitive across the board, or at least strive to be competitive in everything. If the Kingdom in Madison ever allowed the peasants at the other Wisconsin state schools to move up to D2, then you would likely have some of the bigger and better schools breaking off with them.

I feel like we play for the NSIC title or win it in virtually every sport; and I don't mean that arrogantly, but to attest to the fact that there are many games that teams just have people in uniform but aren't committed to their athletics like we are; which is frustrating.
