2012 D2 Football thread: Every day I'm shuffling!!!

Re: 2012 D2 Football thread: Every day I'm shuffling!!!

Homecoming at UMD is a MUCH bigger deal now than it was when I attended. Back then most students didn't appear to know or care when it was homecoming and the football game had no discernible attendance bump. Last season we had school record attendance of 6000+ and this season we had our 2nd largest attendance figure at 5948. Not huge by, say, GVSU's standard, but great for us and not inflated. The stands were packed and people were standing 4-deep in both end zones. There were a ton of students there and many were wearing one of a large variety of shirts that students had custom made for homecoming week ( I know they weren't "official" since most referenced drinking in some way). I think it's great that the university has found a way to drum up more school spirit among students than in previous years.

As for the game, the defense dominated the whole game, and the offense dominated the first half. The offense seemed a bit unfocused in the second, despite gaining some yards. It was still enough to win 30-0 against a solid team.

St. Cloud lost The Man title belt to Northern State, 28-27 in the last seconds of the game. This sets things up to where Duluth could end up reclaiming it and taking it into the playoffs.

Hopefully the shutout of Bemidji State is a sign that UMD is getting their act together on the defensive side of the ball. They'll need to be solid on both sides of the ball to make a good run in the playoffs.

Agreed. Minot isn't very good, so you can't make a whole lot of that, but shutting out 4-4 Bemidji is promising. Certainly if our defense plays like it did the first half of the year, we will lose in the first round. I have a good feeling though.

And the regional rankings are out:

Can't say I'm familiar with Henderson State, but at 8-0, they must be pretty good.
Henderson State is in Arkansas. They're one of the Arkansas schools that broke away from GSC to form the GAC with the breakaway Oklahoma schools from the LSC. Back in the GSC, the Arkansas schools always seemed to be in the shadow of the Big 3 of the GSC, Delta State, North Alabama, and Valdosta State.

Interesting that a team in Arkansas is in the same region as UMD. Is there a map anywhere of the regions for D2 football? Just curious.

I know there was a google map done a while back that showed all of the different D2 football schools with different pins for different conferences. I don't believe there was any map that would display them as just regions. Actually the GAC breaking off from their respective conferences is what required the whole shuffle that broke up the yearly fun of the GLIAC-NSIC playoff grudge match.

Henderson State's schedule.

Aug 29th 8:00 pm Southern Nazarene 63 21
Sep 8th 2:30 pm McKendree 47 24
Sep 15th 7:00 pm Arkansas Tech 73 34
Sep 22nd 7:00 pm Southeastern Oklahoma 56 20
Sep 29th 7:00 pm Southwestern Oklahoma 50 22
Oct 6th 4:00 pm Arkansas-Monticello 71 0
Oct 13th 7:00 pm Harding 38 10
Oct 20th 4:00 pm East Central 49 20
Oct 27th 7:00 pm Southern Arkansas N/A
Nov 10th 4:00 pm Ouachita Baptist N/A

I can't say they've really say that they have played any powerhouses this year, but they have soundly beaten everybody they have played, so they must be pretty decent. Only really good looking team they'll have on it is Ouachita Baptist, which is kind of lurking out there in the 10 spot right now in Super Region 3. So, that should make things pretty interesting at the end of the year when they face each other, as its pretty much on of the closest rivalry games one can probably have, as their stadiums and campuses are right across the street from each other, and they have a very good rivalry with each other.

New regional rankings are out. Not a good week for the Northern Sun, as Mankato, UMD, and Winona, despite all winning, all drop one spot in the rankings, with Henderson State taking top spot in the region. As of today, UMD sits 7th. Not sure what they can do (other than win out of course), other than hope some teams lose ahead of them, which will have to happen given some teams play each other. It'll be real interesting to see how this plays out in the coming weeks. In past seasons a one loss season was pretty certain to get you into the playoffs.
