2012 D2 Football thread: Every day I'm shuffling!!!

Re: 2012 D2 Football thread: Every day I'm shuffling!!!

UMD beat a strong Augustana team last Saturday, and that is certainly something to be happy about. While I am also happy that we came out strong, having a great first half and a terrible second half leaves a taste in my that is worse than when we are close at half and pull away in the second. We still haven't played a complete defensive game this year, but this is the first time we were soundly beaten on the scoreboard in one half or the other. Hopefully this is one of those "non-losing wake-up calls" that proves that we can't ease-up after taking a big lead.

On the ride home I heard the announcer say that we thought it would take 5-6 weeks to truly get the defense settled with the new players and coaches, and I think he might be right. The defense has shown that it can play very well, it just need to continue to work out the kink, and I think we have the talent to do that. I have a good feeling that the defense will look much better by the end of the season.

Re: 2012 D2 Football thread: Every day I'm shuffling!!!

Still going to be pretty nervous about todays game up in Houghton.

Re: 2012 D2 Football thread: Every day I'm shuffling!!!

Tech could've won this game - that first half was just awful, and sunk them.
The air just goes out of Grand Valley this year when they start subbing guys up late. They're so beat up right now that they're not really twos, they're more like threes, and it shows. They let a 31 point lead get salted away until Tech just needed a TD and a two point conversion to tie the game up in Copper Country with NFL replacement refs doing the game. :p

I told you stop sandbagging, you moron. :p
So now can I start sandbagging for Ferris at GVSU next week?? :p

Interim Title of The Man for 2012
Pittsburg State University claimed it against Wayne State University 35 - 21 on 12-17-2011

St. Cloud State University now currently holds the title of "The Man" now. I'm pretty sure I had all of the dates from 1980 to present all filled out, I used this website here.... http://michigan-football.com/ncaa/ncaa_ii.htm and I pretty much used that site from there on to determine "The Man". It does get harder to figure out when teams moved up back then, but usually poking thru their older media guides will give you the dates you need, and you also might fight the info to confirm what division a school was when it played somebody who my have been a holder of the title belt then. If anybody can fill in those missing dates or track it back from an earlier champion, it would be a big help as well. In theory here, all NC winners were the Man, even if it was just an interim title.

I think I've stumbled across another website that will make it much easier to track it down all the way to the orginial "The Man" Louisiana Tech in 1973.

Re: 2012 D2 Football thread: Every day I'm shuffling!!!

UMD's D has been brutal in at least one half of every game this season. IMO, they'll never be great this season, but they've shown signs that they could gel and become a serviceable unit. With how good our O is, serviceable is all we really need. If they continue to play the way they are now, they might not even make the playoffs this season.

You're just going to have to see how they respond to this loss. it might just be the thing that brings focus to the Bulldogs. One loss shouldn't knock you out of the playoff chase, but it does mean you gotta pick up the pace more.

Re: 2012 D2 Football thread: Every day I'm shuffling!!!

In hindsight, Tech finally showed their youth at QB and on defense tonight. Last year's team would've probably beaten this GV team, and by a wider margin than 2011.

Umm.... GVSU snuck out a win against Tech in 2011, 2010 is the last time Tech beat the Lakers.

They looked really good in the first half and then SCSU made adjustments and found out they could throw on UMD and did to the tune of 466 and 5 TD's.
Amazing win and kept our season alive.

For your "The Man" research, if you haven't used the http://cfbdatawarehouse.com, I would look there. Many of the current D2 teams are still in the "incomplete teams" section, but it appears that they still at least have game-by-game results for every team at every 4-year level of college football.

St. Cloud still is my 2nd favorite team when it comes to football, so there is a part of me that's happy they kept their season alive and didn't waste a good crowd.

Thanks! The one real sticking point with researching the games back that far is trying to figure out what schools were what division at the time when they were holding the title. Needless to say, its really a mess in the seventies with only one of the 7 champions from there still a D2 school, our very own Northern Michigan. And not only have those schools moved up, a lot of their conferencemates from back then have moved up, or even worse, folded their programs.

Isn't it a 15 yard penalty for using "Champions" and "NMU Football" in the same sentence :p

Check the trophy case in the YooperDome. I know its older than myself by 4 years, and I'm turning 33 on Friday, and probably covered in dust, but there is an NCAA Championship trophy in there. It probably hasn't been dusted since they put it in there in that brand new Yooperdome a few years back.

And well, maybe 4 years from now, NMU will be back on a more winning tack.

Is Minnesota State that good? I'm much more of a D-1 guy and have Iowa season tickets so haven't been able to see them play.

You've got better odds of being able to give the Landcows the old eyeball test than me. I'm sure there's a home game for Mankato that would line up with an Iowa away game. go there, tailgate it. Odds are somebody will have the game on TV or radio there.
