2012 D2 Football thread: Every day I'm shuffling!!!

Is Minnesota State that good? I'm much more of a D-1 guy and have Iowa season tickets so haven't been able to see them play.

I haven't seen them in person either, but based on results they are pretty good. They beat St. Cloud State for the Traveling Training Kit and St. Cloud has since beaten UMD on the last play of the game. We'll know more once Mankato plays Sioux Falls and Winona. If you want to pick one of the 3 remaining home games to attend, I would pick Sioux Falls on Nov. 3. Should be a great game and quite possibly very important in the conference and playoff races.

Yeah, Sioux Falls is having a great transition to D2.

Appreciate the response.

I guess you guys don't quite get the gameday atmosphere here. Not sure I've seen any tailgating for maverick football..

Keep in mind I'm used to one of the best gameday tailgate atmosphere in the FBS too. It's vastly different.

True, I do have to remember that not everybody is like Grand Valley, Pitt State, Northwestern Missouri, West Texas A&M and a few others. Hell, I've shown up up to away games and well into tailgating before any staff has arrived to technically open their lots. Thankfully, haven't been parked in the wrong spot before and needed to move the vehicle. Of course I think one of my favorite memories was showing up way early for a game at St. Joseph's College, out in a cornfield in Indiana. I was working thirds at the time, and I figured that I could get down there and crash out in a parking lot there for a good nap before the noon kickoff. anyways, about 8 am some security guy taps on the window and wants to know what's going on. After explaining myself, I think he got awfully worried at just how many Laker fans were going to show up for that game. It was kind of comical.

Haven't seen tailgating conditions in much of the NSIC much, just a playoff game in Duluth right after thanksgiving, so I figure they might have been a little down for them, but it didn't look do dang shabby there. And it was a huge kick personally to see NotSoSoberHockeyGuy there, after all the shibby he's given me thru the years about how he's just a hockey fan. **** fat bassturd!!

Exactly. Its similar to me going to a game up at the U of M and seeing one tailgating lot at the state fairgrounds with more Iowa fans than MN fans in it. And that's their tailgate scene. Very different from a Saturday in Iowa City, Madison, etc.

I've been to Kinnick and agree that the atmosphere outside the stadium is fantastic despite the fact that We Hate Iowa (Actually had an Iowa throw a beer cup at my wife as we walked back to our car after the Gophers 2006 victory at the Dome). As for NSIC venues, I've only been to Duluth and St. Cloud, but both have decent tailgate scenes for schools that avg about 4000 a game. Since Mankato appears to avg about the same, I'd guess there is some tailgating going on somewhere near the stadium. Obviously you're not going to find anything like an Iowa-like atmosphere if you can't tolerate anything less. I would think that if you find the right people, 50 people at a tailgate can be nearly as fun as 50,000. I know the WCHA Final Five tailgate is a good tIme, and that isn't a huge number of people.

And Ferris has beat Grand Valley for the first time this millenium.

D2F is on fire right now.
Yeah, looks like the GVSU fan base is fracturing into either the Fire Mitchell camp, or the Injuries camp. Either way, I wanna see GVSU with a Monster NT next year, be he a HS kid or somebody from a Juco who didn't get his grades up enough to interest a D1 school.

Re: 2012 D2 Football thread: Every day I'm shuffling!!!

One thing I've always wondered about is the D1 academic requirements, considering conferences like the SEC seem to be able to massage them better than anyone. What is the minimum GPA vs. D2/3, and why does the difference in standards exist to begin with? For instance, it's not like CMU or WMU's admission standards are any loftier than Tech's. :p

For D1, I think early on the idea was that the players were there at that school to learn, and they just happen to be on the football team. So some academic types push thru those academic requirements mostly to try to enforce that idea. Or if nothing more, hopefully try to keep their team from getting totally smoked.
