In the NESCAC context, ED is a binding commitment. At the time of the application, the applicant (AND one of his/her parents) enter into a binding agreement with the institution that he or she will not apply to any other schools (in the case of the later ED2 round, will withdraw all other applications if admitted). An ED commitment is breakable only of the school decides to release the applicant from his/her commitment, which tends to happen only in rare cases such as financial hardship, etc.
Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't almost all NESCAC schools early decisions though and kids have deposited for the fall well ahead of the timing of this announcement?
Sure that's not a binding commitment but when you start throwing $$$ into it you have a better idea of where kids intentions are of going or to better put it where their parents will allow them to go after fronting the money for a deposit.
