2012 D-3 commitments

Re: 2012 D-3 commitments

Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't almost all NESCAC schools early decisions though and kids have deposited for the fall well ahead of the timing of this announcement?

Sure that's not a binding commitment but when you start throwing $$$ into it you have a better idea of where kids intentions are of going or to better put it where their parents will allow them to go after fronting the money for a deposit. :)

In the NESCAC context, ED is a binding commitment. At the time of the application, the applicant (AND one of his/her parents) enter into a binding agreement with the institution that he or she will not apply to any other schools (in the case of the later ED2 round, will withdraw all other applications if admitted). An ED commitment is breakable only of the school decides to release the applicant from his/her commitment, which tends to happen only in rare cases such as financial hardship, etc.

Re: 2012 D-3 commitments

Only about a 1/3 of admissions at NESCAC's are ED but they are used to a larger degree for recruited athletes because if the coach supports the kid with admissions he or she knows the student is committed to that school. As importantly if you were to break an ED commitment to one NESCAC school the chances of getting into another NESCAC school are extremely unlikely-- it is definitely a mark against you. The Ivies work much the same way.

Last 2 posts are spot on. Most women's ice hockey players (like most students generally) are not admissible at NESCAC and Ivy schools (the minimum academic index at the Ivies places you well into the top 25% of students in the country and Ivies only take a few minimums across all sports every year so most athletes there are in the top 10% of students nationally - NESCACs are similar). As a result, coaches (and players) use ED to show the highly competitive schools that the athelete is highly committed to that school and that the combination of athletic skill and commitment should warrant taking a below average (for the school) student. Despite ED being only ~10-20% of total applications at these schools, they fill 1/3 (or more) of their class from ED. Coaches at these schools know that if a player applies regular decision their chance of getting in is markedly lower - they only use it in situations where they failed to get enough players in ED OR they have a recruit that is extremely academically qualified. Brown and Princeton faced this situation this year and had to roll the dice in regular admissions due to ED failures. Know of numerous situations where girls decided to not commit to any school via ED because they weren't decided, applied to multiple schools in regular admission thinking they would get in, and got in nowhere because their academics weren't good enough and the coaches had limited influence by then. Several (very good hockey players) ended up at schools that don't even have hockey teams or doing a PG year.

As a result of the above, the NESCAC and Ivies take the ED commitment very seriously. The chance of breaking one and then signing up at another NESCAC/Ivy is virtually zero - unless it is financial aid driven and by the time that is resolved and the committed school releases you you'll miss the application deadline at the other schools. The theory is that you are picking the school, not the coach (which girls should be doing really). The coaches at most of these schools will tell you that you should make sure you will be happy there because they could be gone over the 5-6 years between when you commit and graduate.

Nice post, but I have a couple of observations that might impact this, at least in generalities. First, the coaches love ED because it allows them to know if they have a girl quickly. The recruited player loves ED because coaches might say "I can't hold your spot forever", so the girl will want the decision quickly as well. On the flip side, and at the big and little Ivies this is a BIG flip side, applying ED basically kills the student's leverage with the financial aid office. If, for example, a girl has been accepted regular decision at Harvard and Yale, the one thing that both of those schools really hate is not losing the applicant, but losing the applicant to the other Ivy school. In this example the applicant will get the best possible aid package only by leveraging one school against the other. If she had applied to one or the other ED, the aid offer will be significantly lower (all other things being equal.) For this reason, I think many recruits looking to get into Ivy schools stick with regular decision if financial aid is an important component of their decision.

Either way, its a tough road to navigate between school choice and team choice.

Great point and absolutely correct - you totally lose the leverage of competing financial aid offers in ED. Had a kid a couple of years ago (non-athlete) that got into two top 10 schools and was able to reduce the cost of the schooling to us by $5000 below the initial low offer of teh two just by showing each school the other's offer (in sequence of course...) - they kept meeting each other's offer until they were equal and she could make the choice based on other merits of the schools.

In ED you give this up. In return, you get a much higher likelihood of admission. That being said, financial aid offers at the Ivies and NESCAC schools tend to be relatively generous up front (obviously varies school to school). Given that, kids who aren't REALLY strong academically and have some financial capability to pay are generally probably better off going ED at one of these schools if they have enough of an idea of where they want to go rather than taking the rather significant chance of not getting in anywhere through regular decision. But every situation is unique and definitely a tough decision to make.

Re: 2012 D-3 commitments

Know from experience that some schools have the ability to give you a "financial read" up front as far as financial aid is concerned - Ivy's in particular. That way you have an idea whether or not you qualify and for roughly how much which may or may not help in deciding whether or not ED is a good option or not.

Bowdoin: F- Ariana Bourque- Holderness

New requirement this past year and going forward for ALL schools participating in Federal Loan programs (that is pretty much all colleges) is to have an online financial aid estimator available to prospective students. You can usually find them on the school's website under Admissions or Financial Aid. The Ivy and NESCAC schools generally have very good estimators and we found the results to be VERY close to the actual financial aid offers. Since these schools are all need based financial aid (no athletic or merit scholarships), the only way to generate higher financial aid awards is to generate more need. The need calculation is pretty standard, so unless you have a special circumstance (undeclared dependents (parents perhaps), unusually high medical biils, unusual financial obligations, etc.) that don't appear on your tax return somehow, they will generally be pretty close. At least it is a starting point for thinking through the potential costs of these schools. The poster is correct that once you get to the point where you are a serious recruit at one of these schools they will conduct a more thorough financial aid estimate specifically for you (generally in the late Spring or early Summer between Junior and Senior year).

Re: 2012 D-3 commitments

wow - if this is true it makes you wonder what will happen to plattsburgh as well. the best parts of the oswego and plattsburgh teams are the canadians

Only in America can Canadiens receive scholarships to State Colleges that students from the same state can't receive.

Re: 2012 D-3 commitments

Its not really a scholarship...if it is anything like the Tuiton Waivers they had at UWS...it most likely waives the out of state tuiton cost for the Canadian Students...giving them the same tuition as the students from that state. I don't know if that is accurate, but if it is anything else, it would probably be illegal via NCAA rules as giving preferential treatment to Athletes.

Edit: A quick perusal of the website shows that out of state tuition is 14,500ish, while in state is 5,400ish...the scholarship was for 12,000 i'm assuming the other 3000ish would be to assist in the housing cost(8,000ish). And its not just for Canadian students...but for all international students. Universitys have to lure in international students, most students choose these schools because of these tuition waivers.

Looking at the "total fixed cost" for undergraduate residents at Oswego..I don't know how kids afford it these days. The one year TFC was almost 20,000. My student loans for UWS were 25,000 for 4.5 years.

Truly great news if true.

About time US schools stopped getting snookered....in particular at State Colleges where US taxpayers fund the entire program.
