2012-2013 North Dakota Hockey: Season Thread

Let me preface by saying I hate you guys.

This is the game that surprised me. Not us, not Denver, and not the goofs, who have a great roster but to me just haven't been a great team this year. But I really thought that Kristo, Knight, and little guy could carry you all pretty far, as no doubt you did. Those guys are great players. I empathize with the sucky feeling fans have at the early exit, which is by no means the same as sympathizing. As I said, I hate you all. But I get it.

If Jan advances, ok, but I'd just as soon see them blow up and we can all get on with our new conference lives. We'll be perfectly happy to burn your wagons next year in a opening round NCAA match-up, but if not, you'll just have to count on that home cooking to keep up your spirits up until we meet again the following year.
Steer clear of the feds, and maybe buy yourselves a fire extinguisher or two for crying out loud. Hate to have you all miss out on the return of Bucky vs. Sue because you're all in prison again, or blown up. Keep the multiple chins up and see you around, you ugly sheep ****ers.

Let me preface by saying you are a complete tool.

GFY.

Don't you have some road kill to make Bucky love to?

Might be a long, long time until we see someone with Kristo's talent that also sticks around for his full four years... thanks much to our seniors!

And Kristo is a 1990 birthdate who played an extra year of juniors. A rarity having a kid for five years after the NTDP and being a 2nd round pick

This is a little more geared to the offseason thread, but do you think we even face a chance of anyone signing early this year? Grimaldi and Forbort seem realistically like the only two that could. I imagine Florida may be looking to signing Bjugstad and Knight rather than Grimaldi at this point, and I think Grimaldi could really use at least one year of being THE guy at the college level. I could imagine Forbort jumping, but I'm not sure he really pieced together a year that would make the Kings super anxious to sign him. We could be looking at another very strong defensive core next year, not so sure about the offense, though.

Grimaldi is 0 percent chance. Too small and not good enough yet.

Forbort is 50/50

Good defense and all is great, but if our goaltending doesn't improve, it doesn't matter.

See, I know Forbort isn't all too concerned with education, but that could really work either way. I said the same thing about Kristo last year.

I don't know what to make of our goaltending.. We finished T-17th in GAA with SCSU, and Saunders and Gothberg finished right around the upper middle pack, but they seemed to lose more games than steal them for us. From my understanding, I think this may be on coaching. I have heard that Karl Goehring is not a huge fan of Saunders style of play. Goehring believes in a small, agile goaltender, where Saunders is an aggresive, bulky goaltender.

Looking at College Hockey Inc.'s college commitments, it appears that UND should have a freshmen class of about 10, it's going to be hard to find room for everyone next year.

And stay away from the paint thinner. Wisconsin has been a great rivalry. It won't be the same, but perhaps we can keep up the animosity between the two fan bases meeting once/year. I hate the fact that our all-time results have surpassed Bucky, but you have a winning percentage against us.

Seems inevitable there will be some non-returnees. A more interesting question is how many / who. (I have no inside knowledge, so won't speculate.)

UND needs scoring, so that means freshmen in the lineup, and some upperclassmen will be in the box, even after some departures.

Who are the 10? I've only heard Thompson, Ladue and Stecher on defense, and Johnson, Tambellini and Murphy at forward. I suppose it's possible they add a third goalie from somewhere, too.

Those six replace Kristo, Knight, Rowney, MacWilliam and Gleason (not counting Maris). The fact there is an extra defenseman coming in suggests Forbert's a pretty strong flight risk.

But who else is coming in. Our roster was pretty sizable this year already. I don't see where we'd fit four more in unless there is about to be a wholesale move to minor league hockey for a bunch of players, that no one is talking about.

I don't think that either Forbort or Grimaldi did well enough this year to get enough interest to get a decent contract. They both could use another year at UND. But Grimaldi has said he only plans to stay one year so we'll see.

Ironically, goaltending didn't cost us the game against Yale. Not putting the puck in the net was the problem. But I agree, generally goaltending has to improve.

Re: 2012-2013 North Dakota Hockey: Season Thread

As much as I like watching Kristo toe drag his way through defenders, it might just have been a consequence of trying to play that game, of trying to be too neat. For all of Grimaldi's skills I keep going back to that play in Mankato in the third, when he sat there trying to finesse his way around the goalie when he could have just taken a few whacks at the puck and hoped to put it home.

There isn't any room for that when you're facing a 2-1 deficit in the NCAA's. Put the puck on net and grind it out.

Some interesting thoughts from Schlossman on what went wrong this year, and what could have been...

Two years ago, I was sitting down and looking at the makeup of future UND teams.

I looked at the 2012-13 squad and said, “That team is going to be really, really good.”

I figured it would win the MacNaughton Cup. Figured they would be poised for a run at the national championship. Figured they might be just as dominant as the 2010-11 squad, and as long as they didn’t run into Shawn Hunwick, this would be the team to beat.

Who was going to compete with their depth?

Top line: Brock Nelson, Corban Knight, Danny Kristo.

Second line: Stefan Matteau, J.T. Miller, Rocco Grimaldi.

Third line: Mark MacMillan, Carter Rowney, Michael Parks.

Best line in college hockey? Heck, that may have been the best two lines in college hockey.

But then, some dominoes fell the wrong way.

Miller got drafted by the wrong team — one that wanted to sign him immediately. He signed and played for the New York Rangers this year.

Matteau, after repeatedly telling the staff (and others around the country) that he’s coming to UND, changed his mind to go play major juniors. He also signed out of high school and played for the New Jersey Devils this year.

Nelson, who most (myself included) thought would stay for his junior year, signed with the New York Islanders and played this season for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers in the AHL.

And with that, UND lost three first-round picks that were scheduled to be on this year’s team. That changes things.

They recruited Connor Gaarder and Bryn Chyzyk to fill Miller and Matteau’s spots late in the game. They are solid contributors, but they are not 6-foot-2, NHL-ready power forwards with soft hands.

Yes, losing players unexpectedly is the name of the game in this age of college hockey. That’s why everyone outside of UND has missed the NCAA tournament at least once in the last 10 years — Minnesota, Wisconsin, Boston College, Michigan… everyone. That’s why none of the above-mentioned teams have a shot at winning the title this year.

You have to adjust to it and move on without them. And UND did its best.

They were still a pretty good team this season. They were a post away from winning the MacNaughton Cup (remember the OT in Mankato?). Another post away from going to the Frozen Four (one of three posts, actually). Average teams don’t get that close to those achievements.

They still won 20 games, got home ice, got to the Final Five for the 11th straight year (when nobody else has been there more than two years in a row) and reached the NCAA tournament once again (winning a game there).

Considering all of that, you have to classify this team as a good team.

But they weren’t a great team.

Coming from the link below (I don't know how official it is):

Stecher, Poolman, Murphy, Tambellini, LaDue, Crisfield, Voltin, L. Johnson, Pelnik, and Rowe.

Adding to the guys who hardly played down the stretch like Seinkbeil, Chyzyk, and Panzerella.

Re: 2012-2013 North Dakota Hockey: Season Thread

Word has it that Derek Forbort will sign with the Kings sometime this week.

Re: 2012-2013 North Dakota Hockey: Season Thread

He has them coming in 2014...not 2013.

EDIT: Sorry, misread your post.
My post wasn't very well written. What I meant to write was that Chris H. seems to suggest a number of those players identified by Phat will actually be coming to UND in the fall of 2014, not this coming fall.

Re: 2012-2013 North Dakota Hockey: Season Thread

What happend to Luke Voltin?? Wasn't he supposed to be a star the Sue stole right from the Gophers back yard?
Sorry to break it to you but Shane Gersich is the next Luke Voltin...Hak can't evaluate talent...he just goes off hype.
Pog will be a stud though, no doubt.

Someone please tell me the real reason Cary Eades was fired? Everyone says there is more to the story but nobody will say???
