It is a pick and choose situation though. That's the issue. It's either a policy or it isn't. If the policy says Minnesota should not play teams with Native American nicknames, why were they playing teams with Native American nicknames? I don't think Lucia is avoiding UND or scared of them or anything, I think it's exactly what I said. He'd rather play his son's team and some east coast teams. And I have no problem with that.
The flaming is a major part of the fun. It is all in good fun. I think we all would rather there was no gap in playing each other despite our groundless, fake accusations. Good flaming is taking a grain of truth and blowing it completely out of proportion."I get that North Dakota and its fans are obsessed with Minnesota. It is kind of cute but also a little stalkerish. Just go sit in the corner for 3 years and we will see what we can do about letting you play again." gopheritall
The main reason real fans of both programs are frustrated with this is because of the great respect each has for the other, no matter the flaming by some fans. When you play a quality opponent, it makes you better, win or lose. Both programs are great, thus the rivalry. Plain and simple.
holy crap are you on the defensive. You mean the Lou-chia-pet's dance card is filled up for the next 4-5 years??blah blah blah.

This policy was in place before the NCAA policy on Native American nicknames and Minnesota played Florida State in basketball. To me this policy means that FSU was not on the OK list for Minnesota to play. But they did play. If Minnesota truly was against Native American nicknames, they could have opted out of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Precedent for this was set by Indiana when they opted out because Bob Knight was a grumpy old man. Minnesota didn't opt out though because this is a policy that is applied or ignored depending on what is convenient.
A few more examples:
The baseball team invited FSU to participate in their Dairy Queen Classic Tournament in 2004.
The softball team went to the Florida State Classic tournament in 2004.
The swimming team is hosting UND this Friday!!!!
So yes the nickname is just an excuse.

I don't have any proof but I am pretty sure the Lucia didn't schedule any of those games. He is responsible for scheduling men's hockey non-conference games. Please give 1 example of Lucia scheduling a game that has not been in compliance with U policy at the time that the scheduling decision is made. The Big Ten/ACC Challenge is scheduled at the end of the previous year as the #1 ACC team plays the #1 Big Ten team, #2 ACC vs. #2 Big Ten, etc. The volleyball team also played FSU in 2005. Perhaps you are correct and all these games were scheduled before the policy was in place, but I really doubt it. And it's definitely not the case with the basketball team.

Minnesota's board of regents won't allow the Gophers to play games against schools with Indian nicknames. Don Lucia and the athletic department at the University of Minnesota have ZERO input or control over that. NONE. By the time UND got the nickname issue resolved, Minnesota had already filled their non-conference schedule.
Some points about this.
1. To those who say Wisconsin managed to leave room open, why couldn't Minnesota?
Unlike Wisconsin, Minnesota has four in-state rivalries to maintain. In-state hockey has always been important to the Minnesota program.
I'm not mad at you. Let's not pretend that all schools are created equal. UND is no Florida State. The NCAA grated Florida State a waiver given to continue to use their name and imagery. UND had no such waiver and the U had no grounds on which to allow games to be scheduled. If UND and the NCAA had worked out an agreement that allowed them to continue to use the Sioux and and imagery you can be sure that something would have been done. It would appear that UND was screwed by the refs (NCAA) again. Blaming Minnesota is just unfounded. Hakstol should have resolved the mascot issue earlier.Lucia has not gone against the University policy, but given the number of times other Minnesota teams have played Florida State since the policy came into effect it's evident that the policy can and is disregarded from time to time. Lucia could have attempted disregard the policy if he really wanted to. But the UND games weren't that important to him, so he didn't. And let's say he did attempt to disregard the policy, why would the board of regents say no when they had no problem playing Florida State? My whole point here has been that Minnesota has a policy that it applies at times and ignores at other times. You seem to think I am on some sort of witch hunt against Lucia and I am not. Don't get mad at me because your University is inconsistent and I'm pointing it out.

That's a crock of $hit. Take a look at how many times Minnesota played "in-state rival" Bemidji prior to them joining the WCHA. One series from 2004-05 through 2009-10. 7 years and they played one series. And of course every pre-WCHA series vs Bemidji has been in Minneapolis, because that's the best way to help out in-state hockey, right?![]()
There are many ways to help in-state hockey.
Mankato State played a home game against the Gophers at the X that added 150K to their coffers that they wouldn't normally get playing in Mankato.
But that's beside the point. Fact is the mascot issue STILL isn't resolved.
