2012-2013 North Dakota Hockey: Season Thread

Not sure that a comment that he really wanted to play for UND's staff translates into "not overly impressed with Minnesota's coaching staff."

Assuming the young man develops into the player we hope he will be (still pretty young), it will be a nice job by Hak and the rest of the staff pulling him out of the Cities. UND hasn't traditionally tried to concentrate it's recruiting in the metro area, but we have pulled a few nuggets out of there over the years. It was the opinion of a few of their fans that the move to the BTHC would make it that much harder for UND, DU, CC, etc..., to recruit there. Nabbing some MN "legacy" recruits like Shane is a nice pick up.

Sounds like Gersich wanted to go "his own way". Make his own path instead of following in footsteps. Can't fault a kid for that. You're right, UND has gotten a few good nuggets from the Citites, but the vast majority of kids from the cities have and always will choose Minnesota. I don't think the conference shakeup changes that either way.

Things can change but currently the chance to play in a very strong-looking group of teams in the NCHC might sway a few? The B10 has some very traditionally strong programs, but right now the teams as a group in the B10 are not as strong.

Can't really look at how things are now and try and draw any conclusions about the effect of the conference shakeup's impact. We'll have to wait 5-10 years.

That will change in a hurry especially since the Big Ten is adding another 20 million dollars to their budget.

Yeah, not so much. Nice get but he's not Parise for Parise's sake. Gopher fans are disappointed but not exactly pulling out our hair.

You win some and you lose some in this game called recruiting. IMO, we don't know the unkown but within five to ten years after the dust settles we likely will see 9 times out of 10 the Big Ten coming out on top.

A reasonable person would say that some kids will just want to jump the fence a little and that nothing can be extrapolated from this commit.

But you can't tell this Sioux fan that Gersich's decision doesn't provide conclusive proof that UMinn is circling the drain. They'll be leaving the B10 for the old WCHA within 3 years.

Or maybe this is what that whole Mayan thing was about.

Interesting. Many fans are still in the WCHA vs WCHA rivalry stuff but in three months that changes. With the change comes I don't care attitude about other conferences like NCHC. It might feel smart today but in the future it will feel different.

Last time the Gophers lost a big name recruit from the Twin Cities to UND was 10 years ago. The Gophers won an NCAA title his first year playing with UND. I know several things....

1. It doesn't happen often
2. It's not the end of the world when it does
3. Shane Gersich isn't Zach Parise

Gersich is a great get for UND, but it doesn't sting nearly as much as Parise did. The Gophers will be fine. They have the #1, #3, and #9 scorers in the USHL coming in next season. They landed the consensus Top 3 1995 birth year Americans last year. So, let's not get carried away. You might make yourself look more foolish than you already do.

Just ignore him. The only time his bit (and he is a bit) is funny is when he gets on his knees in the UW thread and embarasses his own fanbase. :)

Whenever you show up I know without a shred of doubt, I'm not the dumbest person in the room. Thank you.

Source? I saw where he said he wanted to play for UND, but not that he had any problems with Gopher staff. In fact, he said the decision was tough and calling Lucia was really hard.

He said this:

You guys are reading too much into the comment that So Cal said. The player didn't specifically say that, he just liked the coaching staff more at UND.

Maybe he just really wanted to play for a coaching staff that lets the kids get away with whatever they want with minimal repercussions. ;) Lots of 16 year olds think that way...

Back peddle a little faster

Maybe he wanted to play for a coaching staff that doesn't allow players to injure each other at team parties.
