2012-2013 North Dakota Hockey: Season Thread

Re: 2012-2013 North Dakota Hockey: Season Thread

I am loving this D corp this year. Forbort is becoming a force and played a nearly flawless game last night. Gothberg looked good in the net and made a handful of tough saves but I gotta believe Saunders will be in there tonight.

Re: 2012-2013 North Dakota Hockey: Season Thread

Off topic, but myself and some of my idiotic friends are making the trip this weekend. Where should we eat/drink* before and after the games.

*Not everyone in my group will be 21 so a bar that cards at the door may present an issue for us successfully getting in.

Red Pepper. And you need to go to the original on University for the true experience. Avoid the other one like a co-ed with The Clap. They have a picture of the awesome one in the sign of the sh^tty one. That tells you all you need to know.

And you need to know you would have found it the exact same 35 years ago as it is today--same tables, same sauce bottles, same urinal deodorizers. The old guys are afraid to go in there loaded because it ******** with their minds.

Original Red Pepper on University. It's a must.

3 votes for Red Pepper none for any other place in town? Balanced diet here I come!

Seriously though, thanks for the tips, much appreciated.

But.....what about the Olive Garden???? Will I need to make a reservation???

In all seriousness, where is a good breakfast place?

My guess is that's not an issue in Grand Forks, this based on just the news reports on the off-ice activities of the hockey team. ;)

Most people would recommend the Big Sioux Cafe, but I've never been. The Red Pepper was actually created by a UND class that just minimized expenses (like not having frickin forks...) and it turned profitable and has expanded into two locations. If you go to the original one, don't go between 11 PM - 2 AM because it is packed with drunk college kids. My personal recommendations are Speedway or Italian Moon.

A college kid, who may or may not be drunk this weekend, was the one who asked the question, so I think 11 PM - 2 AM would be the optimum time for him to go so as to get the full experience.

The Red Pepper is a great place to go. Order at the counter, the food is made to order, and you should be able to get out of there spending less than $10. Get an everything grinder and throw some extra white sauce on it. Go there for lunch one of the days. The Parrots Cay is a hole in the wall kind of place but has very good wings. As was stated earlier, they don't open til 4:30 and you need to get there early to get a seat because it's small and very popular on hockey nights. Also, I'm not sure whether under-21 year olds are allowed in the Cay. Other places to consider are the Blue Moose (get the spinach-queso dip for an app) and Whiteys in East Grand Forks (both are right across the road from Cabela's if your an outdoorsy person) and Rhombus (pizza) in downtown Grand Forks. If you wanna play it safe and just hit up the chain restaurants, those are pretty much all located on 32nd Ave or on Columbia Road near 32nd Ave. For breakfast hit up the cafe in the Flying J truckstop (south end of town just off the interstate) or Gramma Butterwicks on Washington St. The Aaltos Cafe in the Canad Inn actually has a pretty decent breakfast also.

If you're looking for more expensive dining, hit up the Toasted Frog or Sanders, both in downtown Grand Forks. (My opinion, Toasted Frog is better and cheaper, but must be 21)

Personally, I've never understood why anybody goes to the Italian Moon......

A few of my recommendations:

-Blue Moose (located across the river in downtown East Grand Forks), 40 beers on tap, extensive menu

-Rhombus Guys pizza (located downtown Grand Forks), The T-Rex pizza has been voted the best pizza in town for the last 4-5 years.

-JL Beers (dozens of imported and domestic beers, burgers made to order, fresh cut fries and chips). The place is tiny so get there early.

Also downtown, Joe Blacks and The Toasted Frog

Ah I forgot about JL Beers. Good stuff, but I think they may require you to be 21?

Edit: Oh and another thing now that I reread the original question. You probably won't have much luck drinking at a bar/restaurant if you're under 21 and don't have a fake ID. I suggest borrowing a friend's for the weekend..... ;)

You're right on that. I forgot about the age restriction when I was listing recommendations. It might be the same for Joe Blacks.

Never understood the Italian Moon fascination either. Average at best in my book as far as food goes but great people who run it. My hockey team I coach like it and they do treat us well.

You must be 21 to get into the Cay after a certain time (probably 9 or so). Also, I thought I heard Whitey's closed?

Whiteys re-opened about a year ago. They took the back bar out and now just have seating back there. Not the same at all but the food isn't to bad.

Darcy's Cafe on N. Washington. North Side Cafe and Big Sioux aren't too bad either.

Little Bangkok in EGF has good sushi and Thai at $10-20.

Parrot's Cay is probably my favorite place in town. If you can't get in, you can order anything for takeout. Wings, jambalaya, cajun pasta, are all very good and choose your heat (3-15). But yes, order or go early. Opens at 430, and I usually don't even bother goin in after about 5:15-5:30 as it will be packed hockey game or not.

Hub bar downtown has a very good burger.
