2012-13 NHL Thread. Fehr Thee Well??

Re: 2012-13 NHL Thread. Fehr Thee Well??

In other words, after a year off, the players tell Fehr to screw himself, bend over and take it up the arse from ownership?

Yeah, sounds accurate.

At the end of the day, the players always have the week hand compared to the owners in sports labor disputes because owning the team is a side-enterprise for all the owners but it is the only source of income for nearly all the players.

Yep

Re: 2012-13 NHL Thread. Fehr Thee Well??

The days of the KHL being a credible threat to NHL owners from Fehr ended when a Russian plane wiped out an entire hockey team because the Russians are too cheap and lazy to bring their aviation up to North American or Western European standards.

In that case, hopefully Gary Bettman goes on a trip to Russia soon.

Signs point more toward a lockout. Especially with AHL teams loading up on higher than usual AHL only contracts. The Chicago Wolves keep signing players; fans last remember this happening in 2004.

Re: 2012-13 NHL Thread. Fehr Thee Well??

I know it's never going to happen, because obviously, but under the owner's proposal, the salary cap would end up at about $55m. How does that even work when two-thirds of the league is over the cap? It would take years to get down to that number for some teams.

IIRC, there is a set percentage rollback on all current contracts as part of that deal.

This just in -- the CHL (Major Junior) players have formed a union. The CHLPA wants better educational benefits for all players.

This is going to be fun. I want Harvey Specter as their counsel.

And an update on the NHL -- Don Cherry sees a 2 month lockout. That would put hockey back into play in early December.

Anyone for an over/under on December 7, 2012??

More proof positive that the NHL is in dire financial straits -- Taylor Hall 7 years $42 million.

Over. My guess is October 2013.

Brian "Killer" Kilrea is recovering from triple bypass. One of the great characters of the game. Get well soon.

"The contract stipulates that the NHL would treat a work stoppage in a similar fashion to a "force majeure" cancellation brought on by an act of God, riot, weather, disaster or other activity beyond the league's control."

In the contract for the Winter Classic... Anyone else not surprised Bettman thinks his actions are equal to an act of God?

Would it be wrong if I made the Lord thy Gary a pick in the USCHO Dead Pool? :D

Assuming we have a season, I'm going to try and see a game at every NHL arena this season.

I can fly for free, since I work for an airline. I don't know how likely this will be to happen, but I'm going to try.

It was nice to see that they spent a whole 90 minutes negotiating this week. As usual nothing got done so they will wait until next Tuesday to resume talks but as they keep tellling us there is plenty of time.

Figures the Wild sign 2 free agents people have heard of and we are likely to not have a season.

Honestly, I expect that the players will capitulate on about September 16th. They gain nothing by dragging things out: they get a haircut on salaries either way - they accept the owners deal now or they accept something similar later and have the risk of lower revenue from disillusioned fans. About the only group who could extract pressure on the owners would be a class action lawsuit by season ticket holders of the 30 teams for a breach of contract by choosing to lock out the players and fail to satisfy their half of the ticket contract.
