2012-13 NHL Thread. Fehr Thee Well??

Re: 2012-13 NHL Thread. Fehr Thee Well??

I'd be happy about that. Wish my team could play the Blue Jackets a handful of times...

I'm real unhappy about it. Detroit has a long tradition of playing these teams, especially Toronto, and it draws really well. No one really cares to see Nashville or Columbus. Especially 12 times per year.

Re: 2012-13 NHL Thread. Fehr Thee Well??

Came out this morning that the teams will play almost all their games within the conference. We are not seeing a single eastern division team this year in Detroit. no Toronto, no Penguins, no Boston, But plenty of home and home with Columbus. (:

Per Bob McKenzie's Twitter:

Each team plays: 4 games vs. two Divisional opponents (8); 5 games vs. two divisional opponents (10); 3 games vs 10 Conference rivals (30).

So I'm guessing the Wings probably end up with 5 vs. Chicago (current biggest division rival), 5 vs. Nashville (due to recent playoff history), and 4 each vs. St. Louis and C-bus. Factor in 3 vs. the remaining 10 Western Conference teams and it's not that terrible from a standpoint of repetitiveness. However, the travel will be the least equitable it's ever been, with most of the Eastern Conference teams clustered in the NE, all of them in the Eastern time zone, and no inter-conference play this year. Such is life in a league run by clowns.

Well its either this or no NHL. It doesn't make sense to play cross-conference in a 48 game schedule. For once the NHL did something right, in my opinion.

Re: 2012-13 NHL Thread. Fehr Thee Well??

Common sense would be to flip Winnipeg and Columbus to keep the Jets' travel reasonable. But not going to happen.

I remember reading a few weeks ago, that in a shortened season situation those 2 would be flipped, just like you said, but I haven't seen anything about it since, so I'm guessing its not happening.

I keep forgetting Winnipeg is playing as an Eastern team. Something else that could be easily resolved, and was not. Frankly, I don't much care any longer - swap them for Columbus, then put Winnipeg in the NW and move Minnesota to the Central. Done, with the only odd thing being Columbus in the Southeast, but that's more of a quirk than a problem, and they should be thrilled to move into the easiest Eastern division.

I assume that the playoffs are staying 8 teams/conference, best of 7 series then?

Re: 2012-13 NHL Thread. Fehr Thee Well??

Is the whole division realignment thing still taking place one of these upcoming seasons, or did that go by the wayside?

No, that was noted as something that the NHLPA and NHL can <strike>argue over</strike> decide upon at a later date.

Re: 2012-13 NHL Thread. Fehr Thee Well??

Something needs to be done sooner rather than later. Having Winnipeg in the Southeast division is just ridiculous.

Ya, can't say he didn't deserve it, but the timing? What am I missing? Did he have a blow up with ownership or something?

Gotta be over a Luongo trade IMO.
I think either ownership wants him bad and Burke doesn't or ownership doesn't like what Burke was willing to give up to get him.

As Pierre Lebrun said on TSN, "That's the Leafs for ya!"

Could be a combination. Either way he's staying on as an "advisor."

The timing is definitely odd.

"Brian will not have direct authority over hockey operations, however this new role will allow our board and I to continue to benefit from his hockey expertise," MLSE president Tom Anselmi said in a statement. "We want to thank Brian for accepting his new role and staying on with our organization."

MLSE chairman Larry Tanenbaum, who is in New York to attend the NHL meetings, said it was "a decision of the board."
