They don't get any extra money if I watch. I don't have a Nielson box, I'm not increasing their ratings.
I suppose if you wanted to really make a difference you wouldn't buy products that advertise with the NHL or Wild.

I generally don't let advertisments affect what I buy, positively anyway. I do actively avoid some companies/organizations due to advertisements, like if the ad has an annoying jingle, they go on my black list. I also actively avoid anything that is advertised on ESPN. I suppose it would make sense to include anyone that advertises with the NHL too.

Not being able to give the Hawks money is finally an advantage of the massively over-inflated secondary ticket market here in Chicago.... I hope that all of the "For profit" season ticket holders fall flat on their face and are stuck selling their tickets cheap.... The Hawks already have the season ticket money, but I get to still go and see the game on the cheap... Usually don't pay for parking and can avoid the concession and souvenir stands for 3 hours... It's win/win...

Maybe instead of buying more tat, slip the parking guy or concessions guy at your arena a hundo. They're the ones who need it.

Re: 2012-13 NHL Thread. Fehr Thee Well??

I'm just going to straight copy/paste what I put on facebook:

As a hockey fan, I'm very sad that the lockout is over. I'm sad that in less than two weeks, the NHL will be back in business and the stands will be full.

I'm sad because it means that as fans, we've become enablers. We're enabling the owners to sign players to million dollar contracts and then cry poor (Hi, Leipold!). We're enabling the owners to make a stand not because they have a reason, but just because they can (Hi, Jacobs!) We're enabling the owners and players to continue to have a work stoppage every seven or ten years and expect the fans to come back at full force.

Support hockey. There are 59 teams that play men's Division I hockey. There are 61 schools that support either men's or women's Division I teams and even more that play at the Division II or III level. The US just won the World Junior Championships. Support the teams they play on and for. Support the AHL and the ECHL. Support the juniors teams that play in your area. Support the businesses, bars, and restaurants that were hurt by the lockout.

Just don't support the league that continues to think only about the money that goes in their pockets and not the fans that bring it in.
I applaud your principled stand and I was as upset about the lockout as anyone else, but long-term... well, let's say everyone says "FU NHL" and the league goes belly-up. What does that do to the sport? I think all the DI teams and DIII teams and AHL and ECHL and junior teams out there are as entertaining as they are because of all those thousands and thousands of young players, from little kids to teenagers to college/junior-aged players and up into the minors, that are driven to work hard and improve their game in order to play at the highest level, which, like it or not, is the NHL. If that incentive isn't there (and, yes, that includes the kind of money that NHL players make), I think the quality of play at all levels would eventually be diminished.

Hope your girlfriend's credit score isn't awful... :p:D

I don't want the NHL to go belly-up. In fact, if I had an ideal scenario, the thirty home openers would go on in front of 0 fans in attendance and 0.0 ratings and then everything would return to normal for the rest of the season. An organized fan protest to say, "Hey, idiots, start treating the fans like they matter instead of treating us like the hurt puppy who will come whimpering back to you despite the fact that you beat us."

Since that's extraordinarily unlikely, I'm just not going to go to any games this season or next. I'll go to a couple Bandits games (that's the lacrosse team, in case you didn't know), I've made a concerted effort to go to a number of Niagara and Canisius games, and I'm actually looking at the schedule for the Jr. Sabres and the D-III teams in the area to see what games I can attend. Of course, I live in the hockey crazy city of Buffalo. It doesn't matter if I go support the Sabres in person or not, someone else will.

I just wish the fans could make a statement that will make the owners and players think twice about having a work stoppage in ten (or eight) years.

One year of a boycott isn't going to end the NHL, but it will send a message to both the owners and the players that any type of labor stoppage when this CBA expires would be disastrously foolish. Even if per game attendance and merchandise revenue falls by only 10%, that should send them enough of a message that the fans are not going to take this again.

Re: 2012-13 NHL Thread. Fehr Thee Well??

I'm a boycotter, aren't I? :(

As am I.

I'll probably be back at some point since I'm out of market anyway and boycotting would be futile if not detrimental to the NHL's cause. However, I do agree the fans need to send some sort of message that they're not taking this treatment lying down.

You know who I want to win the Cup this year? Philly. Imagine Bettman having to hand over the Cup on THAT ice.
