I think when all is said and done it will end up being one of the best classes in Gopher history. They will be bringing in arguably the three top players in the 1995 birth year (according to Chris Peters of USofH and others). Cammarata was the #1 pick in his USHL Futures Drtaft and the USHL Rookie of the year last year as a 16 year old.
Gabe Guertler was the 2nd overall pick in that USHL Futures draft and many think he could end up being an even better college player than Cammarata. He played a big role in Fargo last year. Again, as a 16 year old.
Then you have Hudson Fasching, who many think is the best player in the 1995 birth year. Should be a high first round NHL Draft Pick and is as grounded as he is talented.
This doesn't even include Justin Kloos, who many believe was ready to come in this season, but is playing in Waterloo for a year because Bjugstad is returning. He was the MNHS scoring champion last season, MN Mr Hockey, had (I believe) 11 pts in a single playoff game last season, and has made an immediate impact with Waterloo in the World Club Teams tourney.
Then there is Jake Bischoff, Michael Brodzinski, Vinni Lettieri, and Louie Nanne. Bischoff and Brodzinski are highly touted defensemen that excelled in MNHS hockey and are playing in the USHL this season. Lettieri and Nanne are highly touted forwards that excelled in MNHS hockey and will be playing in the USHL and BCHL this season respectively.
Just to clarify. Jake Bischoff is playing HS this year, last I heard. And barring a few early departures on D, will play a year of Juniors after this year, so probably coming in the 14-15 season.

Well when you know when whats his face stays away stuff actually gets done in here.Amazing. I went to a college hockey thread related to the Gophers and all of a sudden a hockey discussion broke out. Thank you for this last page of actual discussion about recruits.

That is probably the best path for him, as the Gophers are so loaded at D right now (and should be next year). From what I have seen of Bischoff, he has the tools to be a great defensmen. What will be interesting to see is how the needs change for teams going into new conferences. Will the B1G reflect the WCHA? Or will it be an offense-heavy league? Either way, I think Bischoff has what it takes to excel in either system, but there are some recruits that may be either busts or legends depending on the general style of play in the new leagues (also heavily dictated by the style of officiating in the new leagues).
You bring up a great point. It will be interesting to see what type of identity these new conferences take on, and how that effects recruiting.
Yes it will. I hope the B1G turns into a "run and gun" type league where the teams move the puck up and down the ice(trapping to a minimum) also where skill and not goonery are keys to a successful season. I'm sure Michigan, Michigan State and Sconny will play this type of Hockey, we already know that's how the Gophers are built. Not sure about Ohio State or Penn State.

Fasching and Guertler may indeed end up being the cream of the crop, but they'll both need to put up a LOT more points this year before you can start making that assertion. The other kid, Cammarata or whatever his name is, on the other hand, has clearly already proven himself.
im gonna say the gophers will play well at home but will struggle on the road- at least to begin with. when youve got a roster made up of rau/cammarata/lettieri/guertler/kloos/warning/horn/c reilly.. youre not going to have much of an advantage on a 200x85 sheet of ice..
Wisconsin will be run-and-gun???? What Wis team have you been watching for the past several years? Maybe you are correct on the skill v. goonery part, but they have always been D first under Eaves.
I realize that Bucky has been D first but they also do get some high end forwards as well, with the new conference and top end programs that are a part of it, I'm hoping that will translate into more "run and gun" type games. We will see I guess.
So answer this, if it turns out that the Big 10 is full of trapping, D first teams, do you see Lucia following suit?
I think it is clear who the guys who get paid to evaluate talent think and I tend to agree after years of watching both. Particularly Schulze (you seem to think you know his game but can't spell his name?) last year and in HS at Hill.
Reilly is clearly a player on the rise and is the better player. His defense is very much underrated as he showed by his performance at the US Camp (where was your boy at the US Camp if he's such an equal?). It's not all offense with him. It just tends to overshadow his smart position play. I don't disagree that the physical maturity will need work though.
Feel free to write all you want about either. It won't change the reality of what pretty much every paid talent evaluator will tell you.
The Schultz sp is a joke, one a insider would know.....
Trust me when I say, Kevin is a fantastic skater, far better the "Mikey" (that's another sp joke insiders would know). Kevin's gap control, agility, re-activity, defense stick work, footwork, edge control, shot blocking and positioning is far better than Reilly's.
Don't get me wrong, as I'm also fan of Mikey and certainly not throwing him under the bus.
Chuck, I know you are a big WI fan, but regarding the individual abilities of these two players I can tell you I'm far more familiar with both of them than you are.
Kevin is a hidden jem, one that has been over looked. Then again, Butter's knew what Kevin was capable of, seeing he coached him for a season at the high school level.
Chuck-Lots of hype about Mikey, but when this season is over, be sure to reach out to me and say, you were right about "Schultz

Reilly vs Schultz
Both players are lefty, similar in size, 93 birth years and what I would catorgize as "skilled defenseman". Both players will struggle with the physicality of the game due to their size.
Schultz is a excellent skater, the best of all of 93 birth years from MN, with Reilly not even in the top five. Ben Marshall, a young 92 is also excellent skater, with explosive starts. Schultz is a better skater than Marshall, but lacks those first two steps.
Reilly has mad, mad hand skills and offensively is very creative with a hockey sense that is off the charts. He has the best hands skills of all the 93's from Minnesota.
Schultz will be the better defender in 5 on 5 due to his skating and is very capable of running the point on the power play. I also think Schultz will do a better job jump starting the transition game with the 1st pass.
Reilly will be the better power play defenseman due to his superior offensive hand skills, creativity and hockey sense.
