2011 NHL Playoffs IV: Rome is Burning

Re: 2011 NHL Playoffs IV: Rome is Burning

So I don't get how the hit on Raymond isn't a penalty, and a pretty major one at that. Boychuk doesn't even bother playing the puck, which is legal. However, he doesn't really check Raymond at first, he just ties him up for a bit and uses his stick to spin him around.

NHL Rule on Interference:
...Moving laterally and without establishing body position, then making contact with the non-puck carrier is not permitted and will be penalized as interference. A player is always entitled to use his body position to lengthen an opponent’s path to the puck, provided his stick is not utilized (to make himself “bigger” and therefore considerably lengthening the distance his opponent must travel to get where he is going);...

Ok, that's fine and dandy, let's call a minor penalty. However, Boychuk doesn't stop there. He has already interfered with Raymond for 10 feet, but finishes of the last 5 feet with a check into the boards. By this time, it has been in the 2 second range of when the puck was in the vicinity of Raymond. Two seconds is not "finishing your check," as many Boston fans pointed out during the Rome hit*.

It isn't tough to believe Boychuk knew Raymond was in a vulnerable position and thus drove him into the boards. Even before the puck was within reach of Raymond, Boychuk had no intention of going after the puck or letting Raymond get to the puck.

The play should have been an interference minor, until Boychuk drove Raymond into the boards. That's when it gets more serious and a major and game misconduct.

or don't and just flame away

*(In no way am I comparing the two hits, just noting that 2 seconds was way too long in the first case and is way too long in this case as well.)

I have but one question: if Raymond wasn't hurt on the play, would this question still be asked? I don't care who wins, I have my reasons for wanting either team to win/lose.

I don't think it would have been noticed as much (if at all) as it didn't look vicious at first glance. However, I do still think it's a penalty. A case could be made either way for a major, but it's definitely a minor penalty and you can pick one of a few options (hook, interference, boarding.)

I think the lateness of the actual hit is what could bring it in to the major category.

And I too have different reasons for cheering for each team. I still haven't quite figured out who I want to win.

Regardless of what happens on Wednesday night...Thomas for Conn Smythe, as far as I'm concerned. The guy is in the zone, and he's bound to give the Bruins a good shot at winning Game 7 and the Cup, if they can just put the *ing puck in the net at Rogers.

Re: 2011 NHL Playoffs IV: Rome is Burning

The guys on NESN are now calling Luongo - "LeBrongo"!!

The time in Boston is now 15 past Luongo - hopefully the time in Vancouver after game 7 on Wednesday night will be 7 or 8 past Luongo!!!!

Re: 2011 NHL Playoffs IV: Rome is Burning

I've seen reports of a hip/back injury and he'll be out 4-6 months.

1040 in Canada: Sources close to Raymond's family say it's fractured vertabrae

Why the **** would you pick him up off the ice like they did? Vancouver's medical guys are going to get reamed out.

So, D. Sedin made something of a Game 7 "guarantee"...

Whether the Canucks win or lose, Mark Messier he is not.

This guy?

Yeah, not Messier.

Re: 2011 NHL Playoffs IV: Rome is Burning

call me crazy , but vancouver didn't play a bad game last night. Their goaltending might have taken the night off, but they set a tempo early and had some legit scoring chances. They have thomas figured out and have managed to get the east/west down low pass or rebound to try and get it behind him. They had some good chances early on doing just that but couldn't finish.

What I like about game 7 is that Boston hasn't had a bad game this series. The margains are thiner than Amazon.com's net profit figures, and one early goal could send luango back into sieve mode. However, the history is there and Boston has struggled mightly to score over there for whatever reason. Even just one or two lucky bounces might make a difference.

Yeah, But Vancouver has struggled to score the entire series. Thomas has a .945 sv% on the road and a .962 sv% overall. That's a lot different than Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde over there who has a .979 sv% at home and a .773 sv% on the road. He clearly gets frazzled. One softie and you can see the sweater begin to unravel. We have to wait and see who shows up. Go B's!

Re: 2011 NHL Playoffs IV: Rome is Burning

The first one was on the D for giving Boston the room to snipe it. Can't really fault Luongo when it's top shelf.

The second one though, he opened up his legs like a dock whore, and in that move the confidence from his Game 5 recovery was clearly blown. After that he failed to track the puck on the powerplay, which led to #3.
