2011 NHL Playoffs IV: Rome is Burning

Re: 2011 NHL Playoffs IV: Rome is Burning

From the angle on the replay, Burrows' two-hander seemed harder than Thomas' return slash on the ankle. I'd say him giving it back a little was justified, and it wasn't anywhere near the level of Hextall's patented baseball bat to the back of the knees.

EDIT: We've got a new nickname for Lu - Reboundo Luongoal :D

Mike Murphy has already made his ruling regarding the Tim Thomas play

"Pull Luongo" is trending in Canada :D

Hextall wouldn't have made it more than 3 years before he was banned from the game...

You got that right:

And what about just Luongoal?

And if the baseball swing wasn't enough, there's more! An example:

Props to the B's. I had written them off after those two tough losses. Very, very wrong. Admire their heart.

Thanks, and I know this coming from a guy who likes montreal. That says a lot.

On last nights game: boston with another dominating performance. Vancouver got nothing going, and the chances they had, Thomas came up huge , again. Te more you **** with the guy, the more he steps it up. The same is said for the team as a whole. 2 crushing close losses, some chirping, and now you have a series going back to Canada that ( in my opinion) Boston is controlling. Games 1 and 2 weren’t bad. One could have contended they didn’t need to change much, they didn’t and they got rewarded for it. R .Peverly is fitting in nicely. The dude has wheels, dangles and snipes. Having him on the 4th line spoke volumes for the depth of this club.

Boston knows they have not won anything yet. They will approach game 5 level headed, and continue to play the same game as the previous 4 ; a style that has matched up well against the cunuks. Their play continues to improve.

Two more wins boys!!!!

Vancouver had those couple early chances on B defensive breakdowns where the Sedins couldn't quite get their act together. After that, Boston blew them out of the building (again). If the Bruins keep playing like that obviously this series is over. But if they go back to BC and Vancouver wins another agonizingly close puck luck game, then the Bruins have the "my next mistake could be our last" nerves problem and maybe they don't play such a (really fun to watch) aggressive game.

As much as I enjoy anyone with a New England accent curled up in a ball sobbing and making lame excuses, the Bruins really deserve to be on the brink of the Cup -- and they've been a great show to boot. Hard to root against them, since they've been the best team in this series.

I am not sure they have really mentally killed themselves this year. They always rebound and play big when they have too. I agree that game 5 will be a close one and might come down to 1 goal, but I see if both teams continue as they have been, Boston’s chances are very good. They didn’t look bad in game 1 and 2 IMO.

The bruins match up well against vancouver for whatever reason. Maybe its team style, defensive pairs…I don’t know. The Canuk’s D are struggling with the Boston forward lines, and Bostons top pairing is making the sendins look bad. Think Stevens in 1999-200 vs Bure, Sundin, Lindross. I think Kesler is playing injured too….

Have they had their number like this during the RS the last couple years? I've seen Vancouver play a bunch of times and they can be completely stifling. I haven't seen Boston play at all before this series, but for them to make a good team look so horrible my intuition is Boston's not only talented but playing a very smart game. It doesn't seem to be just pairings -- it's systemic dominance.

= Awesome hit by Vancouver!!

= Dirty rotten hit.

Gotta love Canuck fan logic.
While I'm no 'Nucks fan,
The hip-check to McGinn was a thing of beauty (and kudos to McGinn for not fighting just because he was embarrassed). The clothesline by Marchand was dirty.

The frustration I have with Tim Thomas (as I showed last night) is that if the goalie is going to get free reign to hack away, then he needs to lose his invincibility out side the crease. Out of the blue paint, a goalie should be considered a third defenseman, and is fair game.

Re: 2011 NHL Playoffs IV: Rome is Burning

Anyone who thinks Thelma and Louise and the Canucks are done, go look at games 4 thru 7 of the Chicago series. Talk about a psychologically damaged team. Yet, they won Game 7 2-1 on OT.

Hockey is a funny game. Luongo will probably pitch a shut-out Friday.

I object to the Thelma and Louise line. T&L were actually tough. The Sedin sisters aren't fit to carry their skirts. The Canucks more like the chicks from Sex and the City

IMO, this is a perfect example of how we use the word dirty too often when it comes to sports. Dumb play by Marchand, but let's leave the dirty label to hits like Rome on Horton.

A goalie doesn't have free reign to hack away. Anyone who saw what happened could clearly see who started that whole thing. It wasn't Thomas. Also, seems like you have a bigger issue with the rules that are in place to protect goalies.

It's fair as is. Luongo's free to hack away at the Bruins.

..because the series last year has any bearing on the series this year. Chicago outplayed philly in the first two games, not so much in the next two, than played a goal scoring attrition game to win the cup. The Boston/Canuk’s series is not even comparable. Thomas is a legit goaltender. Leighton? Boston has played well in all 4 games. Did philly? The blackhawks top players were playing well and contributing on a nighly basis against philly. Are Vancouvers?

One could make a strong case that these series are nothing alike, aside from the home teams winning the first 4 games. Game 5 will be closer. Luango will be better. The goal scoring will probably be less.

He's talking about this year's 1st round between Vancouver-Chicago, where Vancouver went up 3-0, got outscored 12-2 the next two games, lost game 6, gave up a tying goal in the final two minutes in game 7, but scored in OT to advance instead of being knocked out 3 straight years by Chicago.

That will never happen though. Teams will always reserve the right to protect their goalie.

In this particular case, Thomas was in his crease when Burrows nearly slashed the stick out of his hands. I've got no problem with him giving it back there, and I'd say the same thing about Luongo if he had done it and the Boston fans were crying about it.
