I

Edit: Happy 39th anniversary to Paul Henderson and Team Canada.

Still the greatest moment in hockey history IMHO. I know my American friends will say different. I rank Lake Placid #2, then Vancouver and Sid.

The difference is just about all of Canada was watching or listening to the game live. Most of the US was watching soaps or were at work when the Miracle happened.

But Canada is SUPPOSED to win.

But Canada is SUPPOSED to win.

And there was so much political tension surrounding the game (the Russians had invaded Afghanistan, American hostages in Iran, were we going to boycott the Summer Games?). As the daughter of Jim McKay said about the crowds on the streets of Lake Placid after the game, "The last time I saw this many American flags, they were burning."

There is no denying the political tension in 1980 added to the emotion of the win.

And yes - we were expected to beat the Soviets, but got a rude awakening in the games in Canada to the point of being booed after the first period in Vancouver.

The Sovs' shenanigans in Moscow added to the drama as our guys found the will to win.

To me, the Summit Series is sullied by some of the goonery that helped Canada win. Didn't Bobby Clarke take Kharlamov out of the series with a cheapshot hack to the ankle?

Yes he did. Not defending Clarke's action, but it was the days of the Broad Street Bullies. And the Soviets weren't exactly choirboys either.

If Simmonds is slurring people, he must be fitting into the Scumbag lineup just fine. :D

The banana tosser has been busted

A London, Ont., man has been charged after throwing a banana onto the ice while black Philadelphia Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds was taking part in a shootout, police said on Wednesday.

London police said Christopher Moorhouse, 26, has been charged with having engaged in prohibited activity under the Ontario Trespassing Act.

Moorhouse has been served with a summons and may be liable to a fine of up to $2,000 if convicted.

"black Flyer Wayne Simmonds"

Brendan Smith gets 5 games for his hit on Ben Smith the other night.... I'm in full agreement with this... All he needed to do was just make body contact and he knocks Ben off the puck... Also really liking how through Shannahan is being with these explanations...

Wonder how many of these Shanahan's we're going to get this season??

Other thought -- does he have another suit? I think I've seen the same suit/shirt combo in every video.
