This is good news. No, it doesn't automatically make them a contender again but it seems like a great decision and hopefully pans out.

Yes, I used to own a Ford Pinto.

I bought a Dodge Omni my senior in college for $100. Thing ran like dynamite and was surprisingly good in snow. I won't lie though and I say I wasn't happy to upgrade once working. :D

The main keys are MG is well liked among players, he is a high quality defensive coach that has helped developed a number of NHL defensemen, and he is popular in the recruiting circles. All things John Hill was lacking.

Things will change for the better. Re-hiring him probably saved Don Lucia's job and that is probably why Mike got promoted to associate head coach. A much deserved promotion. I look forward to the Gopher defense being improved and it might even help them get home ice advantage. lol ;)

Wow, it's really refreshing to see these two coaches back together again.:) Here's hoping the unified vision among the coaches will inevitably produce a lot more focused intensity and team chemistry this season.

"Don made it known to me he is open to ideas and suggestions," Guentzel said, "and I'm a better coach now. I have a different focus and priorities. So let's reconnect with the alumni and boosters and get some positive energy in the program."

I agree. Mike's biggest asset right now is his ability to bring other schools ideas that work. He wouldn't have been able to do that without leaving the program. Lucia will do everything in his power to have a unified vision or he is gone.

Re: 2011 Minnesota Offseason Thread

I don't believe MG going to a few other places has had much impact on his coaching abilities or "ideas". He was already a smart coach before all of that. I think he is more likely talking from the standpoint of Lucia knowing that things haven't been working doing it "his way". It seems to me Lucia has probably been a bit too head strong and maybe he is realizing having a less than open mind has been part of the reason he has had issues the last few seasons. When you are not living up to past standards, you are more likely to have an open mind.

Having MG as the clear cut #2 guy is going to do a world of good for the program. There's a lot to look forward to with his addition.
