Re: 2011 College Football: Occupy GameDay!

This is bad news for everyone who doesn't want to see LSU/Alabama rematch.

I'm bowing to the inevitable at this point. Arkansas is going to be 3 going into next weekend vs. LSU, which opens up the Alabama-Arkansas (38-14 Tide) rematch possibility as well. 4th is what, Virginia Tech and 5th is Stanford/Oklahoma State?

Re: 2011 College Football: Occupy GameDay!

But no, I don't think that is logically the stronger argument. Your point about fan disillusionment with polling is a red herring. There will always be a poll - even if there were a 32-team playoff, there would still be a poll, so there would still be a need for people to try to compare 1-loss teams.

The poll wouldn't matter as much were there a playoff system in place. The rest of your post was a wind-bagged attempt to avoid that fact.

Re: 2011 College Football: Occupy GameDay!

Personally, I think only scoring 6 points at home when you're the #2 team in the country is unacceptable, no matter who you're playing.

Re: 2011 College Football: Occupy GameDay!

Let's just say screw it and give Houston a shot at LSU.
We could only hope.

The SEC West now has the #1, 2, and 3 teams in the BCS. Should be interesting, and almost impossible for a non SEC BCS championship game.

How far does Houston move up now?

So we're going to agree to disagree, except when I explain my thought process in detail you still get to make ad hominem attacks? Awesome doing business with you, sir.

In any case, there's no way that this discussion is about whether we would prefer that the polls matter less - obviously pretty much every college football fan (including me) agrees with that, so that would be a really short discussion. The crux of the matter is that given that there is a poll, how would you decide between 1-loss teams? I've posted my thought process in detail for how I would go about it. I'm actually curious how you would break down your thought process as well, but if you'd rather just call me names, have a ball - that's apparently what the internet is for.

I already stated having more quality wins should outweigh having the same number of losses, even if the one is considered a stinker. Mea culpa for the shot.

Re: 2011 College Football: Occupy GameDay!

Ya, well should and the NCAA hardly go hand in hand. There were times during the Santos/Ball years that UNH was well in the top ten and would have had a guaranteed 14 or 15 thousand for the game and they lost it to some school that had a bigger/nicer stadium and they played in front of 3000. This is all about the NCAA selling itself and Cowell stadium is hardly a marketing man's dream.

#9 New Hampshire at #14 Montana State on December 3
#11 Maine at #7 Appalachian State on December 3.

Say what you want about the Pairwise, but it is transparent. No way in hockey the #14 team gets a bye AND a home game, especially against a higher ranked team. And Montana finished #10 in the GPI, but got a #4 seed. But my favorite is #5 Towson hosting #6 Lehigh in the second round. Wow.

Re: 2011 College Football: Occupy GameDay!

He should've been regretting that even if Yale was up 38-7.

I know you're entitled to an opinion on this, but who are you to say he should regret it? I'm sure he'll be just fine with his Yale degree. And can't he go through the process again next year?

Personally, I think only scoring 6 points at home when you're the #2 team in the country is unacceptable, no matter who you're playing.

I think this is the single most ridiculous argument of all when it comes to who should be #2. Alabama is the only team to have given LSU a game. They lost in OT by a FG. The actual final score is irrelevant. That's what happens when two great defenses get together.

As much as nobody wants to see a rematch, I just think Alabama is in fact the 2nd best team in the country. So be it. If you want further chaos, root for Arkansas to beat LSU.

Re: 2011 College Football: Occupy GameDay!

BTW, even if Arkansas loses to LSU, they'll probably now be an at large pick by the Sugar Bowl. Since the SEC will be facing off for the title, a 3rd team from that conference can get picked for a BCS game.

Could be Arkansas-Houston in the Sugar. That would be an interesting matchup.

Re: 2011 College Football: Occupy GameDay!

BCS Title: LSU vs. Alabama
Sugar: Arkansas vs. Houston
Rose: Oregon vs. Wisconsin
Fiesta: Oklahoma vs. Stanford
Orange: Virginia Tech vs. Who Cares

Re: 2011 College Football: Occupy GameDay!

Believe it or not, Michigan actually has a pretty good shot at that Who Cares spot. Although it would probably be in the Fiesta or Sugar.

Help me out...thought the Big East was guaranteed a spot?

Oh, I'm sorry, I thought you were using "Who Cares" as a generic who cares for some at large team. You're totally right of course, the Big East does get that spot, my fault.

I guess it's Stanford that Michigan is supposedly going to replace then.

I'm a Michigan fan and love what Hoke's done this year, but Stanford is a lot more deserving...

I agree, but you look at the fans Michigan can bring, and the general name rec of their program as compared to Stanford, and you see where this is going.

Of course, they have to beat OSU to even make it a conversation, so we'll see.

You are right that a third team from a conference can get into the BCS if the #1 and #2 teams are from the same conference, but you are mistaken about the mechanism by which this happens.

The only way a third team from a conference can be in the BCS bowls is if the #1 and #2 teams are from that conference, and neither team is the conference champion. In that case, the conference champion retains its automatic qualification. So if Arkansas loses to LSU, they can not be picked in the BCS, assuming Alabama and LSU are #1 and #2. It is possible that Georgia beats LSU in the SEC Championship, but LSU only drops to #2, and Georgia would get the Sugar Bowl automatic spot and #1 Alabama and #2 LSU would get the BCS Championship automatic spots, but that's the only way that the SEC gets 3 teams in the BCS bowls.

Under "At Large Eligibility": No more than two teams from a conference may be selected, regardless of whether they are automatic qualifiers or at-large selections, unless two non-champions from the same conference are ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the final BCS Standings.
