Re: 2011 College Football: Occupy GameDay!

Rich Rodriguez to Arizona. Press conference tomorrow.

Good for him. His resume is strong enough that he was going to get another chance somewhere, but I wonder how much the book coming out helped him land another major conference(-ish, it is the Pac-12 after all) gig so soon.

Re: 2011 College Football: Occupy GameDay!

It's almost inevitable, but I really don't want an ALL SEC final.
Blame the other teams for losing games they shouldn't.

Boise State has to be kicking themselves. This would have been the one year all the chips fell right for them to get to the title game.

Crazy, isn't it? Too bad Houston isn't TCU, or they'd have a true shot at it too.

Re: 2011 College Football: Occupy GameDay!

He'll raise them up, so they can stand on mountains;
He'll raise them up, to walk on stormy seas;
They are strong, when they are on his shoulders;
He'll raise them up, to more than they can be.

So, they're going 4-8?

The whole deal with Houston is a great example of why we need a playoff. In a system where only two teams are in the playoff (i.e. just a NC game), it may be hard to argue that even though Houston went undefeated they are necessarily better than a one-loss team from one of the top conferences. But then if we're essentially saying there are some conferences whose undefeated winner will never have a shot at the title, which begs the question why even keep them in I-A if we're essentially relegating them to a lower group of that division. An 8/16 team playoff that gives such a conferences winner an automatic berth, or at least an at-large chance very very likely for someone in their situation, at least allows them to have skin in the game. I'm not saying they'd win for sure, heck they may lost every single year in the first round, but at least you allow them to have skin in the game. Otherwise, just be honest and tell them to go to I-AA since you're never really going to give them a shot at the BCS NC.

They do have a chance. However it requires them and the other teams in their league to schedule tougher NC games, and win them. Even if it means going on the road.

You have to upgrade the conference profile, then those wins over Rice and Tulane might mean something. Much how TCU and Boise State were trying to do by getting into a conference together. Although in their case they were trying to become AQ's.

Re: 2011 College Football: Occupy GameDay!

Auburn and Arkansas? or is it Auburn and LSU?
Job one is eliminating the possibility of an all-SEC title game, so that would indicate Auburn and LSU.

The ideal would be to somehow get rid of any SEC presence in the final, but I don't think that's possible. If it was I guess we would be rooting for Auburn, Arkansas and then Georgia to beat Arkansas in the SEC final, but then LSU is probably in the BCS final.

So I am personally going to root for Auburn and LSU, followed by LSU losing by 42 points to Georgia. Then we can make the argument that all those "only loss is to an SEC opponent" arguments are moot because the SEC aint all that.

In closing: stupid Boise. Stoopid, stoopid Boise! :(

Auburn over Alabama puts them at 2 losses.
Arkansas over LSU, puts both at 1 loss.
Georgia over Arkansas puts them at 2 losses.
Oklahoma State over Oklahoma.
Oklahoma Stats wins Big-12 title game.
Stanford over Notre Dame.
Stanford wins Pac-12 title game.

Most likely means Oklahoma State vs LSU. However there is an off chance it could mean Oklahoma State vs Stanford. Depends how far LSU falls with the loss, and then not having another game to make up the ground.

The problem with that scenario is Stanford isn't going to beat Notre Dame.

I keeed, I keeed; Stanford is going to beat Notre Dame by 30. :(

Stanford pretty banged up and it's shown in the last couple of games, so nothing's a given yet.

The problem is the SEC and the other AQs not wanting to play these guys. I'm sure Houston would've accepted a game with Auburn, but their phone isn't ringing is because they are too good. Auburn would rather play Samford and Northwestern State than give themselves a real game from a Boise, TCU or Houston.

They don't have to pick elite AQs to raise their conference. I'm pretty sure they could get games with Ole Miss, Illinois, Kansas, Utah, etc. as long as they are willing to go on the road.

Also, Houston is the only good team in their conference. The rest of them are Samfords and could get an elite AQ no problem, until they started winning.

Maybe. But as a fan of a high mid-major in basketball, I can tell you that doesn't always work, either, because then you still haven't beaten anyone really good - never mind that you got the best teams that were willing to schedule you. When "Top Mid-Major" beats a combination of "middling BCS school" and "upper tier mid-major" there's probably still a 50/50 shot that they'll get left out because someone else beat "high ranked BCS school," never mind that they also lost to middling BCS School #2.

For example, people actually talked about Nebraska being on the NCAA bubble in hoops last year solely for beating then #2 Texas (might've even been #1, can't remember). Never mind that they'd done jack shiat the rest of the year (their second best win was probably against a mediocre Creighton team). Thankfully they tanked their last 3 games to make it a moot point, but the inequity of the system means that mid-majors never get a single shot at that, let alone the 5-6 shots a year a crappy BCS school like Nebraska gets.

Normally it comes down to people looking for a way to keep "Power Conference Team X" in and leave out "Mid Major Team Y." At least in basketball the mid-majors get the Auto bid to get in somehow. Until there's a playoff, football screws them all over.

Re: 2011 College Football: Occupy GameDay!

The other problem with Houston is that they weren't ranked coming into the season... They start behind the 8-ball... If they were #15 to begin with, it's a different story....
