2011-2012 North Dakota Offseason Thread

Re: 2011-2012 North Dakota Offseason Thread

A weaker conference? D'Ohkay

Well, it could certainly be argued that both the B1G and NCHC will be weaker than the current WCHA. That being said, both new conferences will certainly be capable of claiming to be stronger than the current WCHA (especially if Penn State and Ohio State benefit by the new conference alignments).

As for the B1G/NCHC comparisons, currently the future NCHC seems to have the upper hand in terms of overall strength. However, we'll see what happens when the new conference alignments are actually in place. My guess is that the B1G/NCHC/HE are annually fighting over who should be considered top-dog, and the debate will last as long as those conference alignments last (similar to the WCHA/CCHA/HE debates where all the conferences had their day in the sun).

Didn't the Gophers just win one?

Lucia has won it 3 times in the last 10 years genius.

Hitting the sauce early eh...

My only guess at what he meant was the Final Five. Even still, Minnesota won it just 6 years ago, and Lucia has won it 3 times in his tenure at Minnesota. Wisconsin, of course, last won it 15 years ago.

Given that, it is still quite ridiculous to say when Minnesota just won the MacNaughton and was the best team in the league last season.

Yep Penn St. and Ohio St. put the fear in teams and your boys will play them 4 times each. Then Illinois and Indiana will join the little 10 down the road and dam they will strike fear too. That is one bad azz conference.

if you dont think ohio state is going to draw talent away from miami of ohio than you are seriously underestimating how popular the big ten is in that part of the country. ohio state will likely be a strong school in the future.. as will penn state with the amount of revenue they can put into hiring/recruiting/facilities etc

the big ten is going to be very competitive in time

Before UND players do bad things and aren't suspended, Gopher fans question why they aren't suspended. Now UND players do bad things and are suspended, Gopher fans question why they are suspended.

Amusing.
I also found that amusing as well. Apparently, there are no repercussions for peeing in the street in front of a bar during the early morning hours.

Not true, I heard he had to write "I will not pee in the street in front of a bar during the early morning hours" 100 times on the blackboard.

The NCHC's bottom 4 teams are going to be UMD, SCSU, Miami, and Western Michigan. Those would be top tier teams in ANY other conference in the country. From top to bottom, every team in the conference is fairly regularly in the NCAA tourney. Just my opinion I guess though.

I would agree with you that right now the future NCHC appears to be the best conference from top to bottom. However, we will have to wait and see what happens as a result of the new alignment. In 10 years, if Western and Duluth finish at the bottom of the NCHC every year, they wouldn't be a "top tier team" in any conference. Likewise, if Michigan Tech wins 6 out of 10 WCHA titles, goes to 8 NCAA Tournaments, and makes a Frozen Four or two, they would likely be seen as a "top tier team" in any conference.

My point is that we can't make arguments about perceived future strength of the new alignment based on perceptions from the old alignment.

Now, if in 10 years, the NCHC has each of their 8 teams make several NCAA appearances, and half the conference wins a national title, then it would appear that the NCHC would probably be the most powerful conference. However, if only 3 teams make the NCAA Tournament, and the conference only has one national champion in that time frame, it would be hard to argue that the NCHC is anything more than a slightly more powerful ECAC. FWIW, you can plug that same hypothetical in for any of the other conferences and you'll get the same result.

Even the SEC has doormats. As far as those programs being "top tier" anywhere else and having regular NCAA participation, WMU has been in 4 times since '93-'94, SCSU is 3 for their last 9 and UMD has been 5 times since '92-'93. For good measure UNO has been 2 times in 14 years. I bet WMU and UMD finish outside the "top tier" of their conference more often than not. To take it further you can count Div I NCAA titles and conference titles on one hand between those 5 schools, and 6 members combined have won 3 titles.

And by the way my point is not to proclaim the WCHA or BT will be better nor is it intended as a slam on those programs - just providing some perspective.

So all 3 DI prospects in Ohio will be going a B1G school?

Whatever will the rest of us do?

When does the official WCHA preseason polls come out? Is Grimaldi the odds on favorite for ROTY... again?

Re: 2011-2012 North Dakota Offseason Thread

So is that 11 players total being either suspended a game or being charged with underage drinking? Seems like they are really coming down hard on college shenanigans up in Grand Forks.

As I suspected, that explains why they are ordering mandatory UND AA team meetings. Of course, Whioux fans here were soooo convinced they called team AA meetings because of NDSU's bad publicity.

Before UND players do bad things and aren't suspended, Gopher fans question why they aren't suspended. Now UND players do bad things and are suspended, Gopher fans question why they are suspended.

Amusing.

Completing the syllogism: Therefore, UND players always do bad things. Questions: 1) Will UND ever get a decent role model? and 2) Will Hak crack a smile this season?
