2011-2012 North Dakota Offseason Thread

Re: 2011-2012 North Dakota Offseason Thread

Nice comeback season, I was surprised to see the early season record, most teams do not recover from that.

Re: 2011-2012 North Dakota Offseason Thread

Happy quick geography lesson for you

Most of the sugar beats are grown east of the red river in a state called Minnesota and the board meets in Moorhead also in Minnesota.

wow, next you will be telling me UND players are not all overage semi-pro Canadians, and Hakstool isn't a worse choker than Woog. Just don't try to tell me North Dakota has more than one tree.

Re: 2011-2012 North Dakota Offseason Thread

Gopher fans have bought them all out considering how many times they've ended UND's season. :p ;)

We at UND are a generous bunch. We decided to let someone else get owned by BC in the Frozen Four this year.

Good luck!!!!!!!!!!

(you'll need it...)

And I'm not really wishing good luck. H-E double hockey sticks hasn't froze over yet.

Nonsense. An ECAC team is in the Frozen Four. It's a joke, ECAC'ers.

According to the rodent fans that sat behind me at regionals, that would be BU's players...

all they did was whine about these guys being 7 years older than Kyle "I never waste an opportunity to embellish" Rau.

That was the old ones. They got new ones this year, so they should still have plenty in stock for us to buy up. :D :p

When I move back in a couple months I am bringing a tree with me, so then we'll have TWO!!!!! :D

Are you going to try getting season tickets?

Re: 2011-2012 North Dakota Offseason Thread

Lot of whistlin' in the dark by MN fans. :) They enjoy talking smack about the BC beatdowns of UND in the NCAAs. But it's also worth noting that BC's robust .795 NCAA tournament winning percentage under York would be even better if you take out it's wins/losses against UND (.813 against other opponents ). UND is also one of only two programs to have beaten a York-coached Eagles team twice in the NCAAs (Maine), and of course Minnesota's winning percentage against York and the Eagles in the tournament is a Blutarsky-esque 0.000. :D

Under York, only once (2008).

In relevant news, according to Chris Botta via Twitter, Brock Nelson is apparently in the decision making process between his Junior Year at UND or playing in the Isles minor league system next season. Hopefully, he makes a smart decision and comes back to North Dakota next season.

Chris Botta via Twitter said:
RT @ChrisBottaNHL: Isles tell first-rounder Brock Nelson they're ready when he is. They're putting no pressure on UND center to leave school

RT @ChrisBottaNHL: Nelson weighing options with advisor, family and UND Coach Hakstol. 3rd year of college/Frozen 4 bid vs. year in minors.

What are you thinking FS23? This one makes me nervous..

The only legitimate reason for leaving I feel like would be the fear of getting hurt. Develop at UND with your teammates, rather than in the AHL, make a run at a title, make your money next year. Only way that doesn't happen is injury?

I think a lot could come down to Kristo's decision. I think we keep two or lose two.

I think it would also be fair to add to the factors a possible Hobey nomination. He certainly has to be in the pre-season list of top 10 favorites, if he returns.

I think Nelson is probably 60/40 to come back. The allure of professional hockey is quite persuasive, but I think Nelson has a pretty level head on his shoulders, and will realize that college hockey is more fun than minor league hockey.

I keep hearing that Kristo is just as likely to come back as he is likely to go pro. That surprises me, but it is important to remember that he comes from a college hockey family, and wanted to play with the Sioux years before ultimately playing here, so I think it kinda makes sense.

I think these two are probably the biggest flight risks, and would probably place Forbort next in terms of likelihood of going pro. MacWilliam probably could use another year, and Knight is probably not a NHL caliber player (but could make a long living in the AHL). Other than those guys, I don't see anyone really as a big threat to leave early, but there are always surprises. Basically, you can never really count someone in until warmups before the opener. That being said, we've been fortunate enough to typically know by about the end of May what our lineup will look like, and I think this year will be no exception.

Next year could be another special year. I don't think we'll be as good as 2010-2011 or 2003-2004, but could very well be as strong as 1997-2000 or 2006-2008 where we were legit national title contenders each season. Hopefully next year's group is able to bring home #8.

Who is going to replace the goon squad of Blood and Lameroux for next year?

Too early to say. This is determined annually, in August, during the UND Hockey Pankration Games held in old Memorial Stadium. Haven't seen the early line yet, so I don't know who the favorites might be.

The early favorites are Forbort and Gaarder. Minnesotans typically always have the edge when it comes to goon tactics and thuggery. That being said, don't count out Gleason or Nick Mattson.

Hard to pass on the odds you'll get on Grimaldi though.

Re: 2011-2012 North Dakota Offseason Thread

Someone over on SiouxSports apparently has a "reliable source" that hasn't been wrong yet, saying a pact may be made from this group, but that Kristo is not included, he will decide on his own.

Not that it means a lot or that we should put a lot of stock into, but just thought I'd pass the word.
