2011-2012 North Dakota Offseason Thread

Re: 2011-2012 North Dakota Offseason Thread

Not happy with the idea that you'll no longer be the Sioux anymore. But since the NCAA backed off and OK'ed the hostile and abusive names at Florida State and all that, and that idiot at Standing Rock who kept his people from actually voting on it, there really isn't much you guys could do about it. Still think it would be cooler to just go with no nickname, just saying that the NCAA stole it, just like a white man would. ;)

Exactly. I also find it ironic that the NCAA is headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana. That being said, it is sad to see the name go, and they will go with no nickname until at least 2015. After that though, they will pick a new name. Hopefully they pick something unique.

I say you guys should hold onto the Banner until NDSU agrees to play for the Nickel once more. :D

While that would be funny, I hope they send it on down to Fargo. NDSU earned it, and if the situation were reversed (which it very well could be in the future knowing the NCAA), I would hope that NDSU would do the classy thing and send it up to UND. That being said, hopefully they get that rivalry renewed. UND never lost while I was a student there, and my brother (fellow UND alumnus) and I had a lot of fun razzing my brother (NDSU alumnus).

Re: 2011-2012 North Dakota Offseason Thread

Anyone who wants to keep this nickname, or any other nickname that supposedly "honors" the tradition of a Native American tribe should have to take a course on the history of American Indians. What European settlers, and later the United States did to these people was straight genocide. Estimations about the % of the Native American population killed off are staggering. For a government institution, which is what the University of North Dakota is, whether it be local, state or federal to use the Sioux name and image, and in some cases profit off of it, after what the US Army did to the remainder of Crazy Horse's band of Oglala Lakotas at Wounded Knee, South Dakota in 1890 is a joke. And no a statue outside the hockey arena and a monument to Crazy Horse out in the Black Hills does not make up for it. I am glad that the name and logo are gone, hopefully for good.

How much money have you donated to any Native American funds to help with domestic violence, addiction, or poverty? None?! So i guess you're just another soccer mom spinning the wheel of justice and pointing your mouth cannon at the masses. Buh-bye.

NCAA = Great White Father?

Re: 2011-2012 North Dakota Offseason Thread

UND got screwed (no snark) and I assume INCH is behind it (snark).
I still think there is a chance for UND to get the last laugh. Don't adopt a substitute name. All the fans will keep referring to the teams as the Sioux. The sweatshirts and jerseys will continue to be worn. The University itself won't be able to use the name, but it won't stop everyone else from doing so.

You're going to see that happen during the next 3 years when UND during the official "cooling off" period adopts no replacement. I think after everyone sees what happens, no one is going to be in a big hurry to add a new name. The athletic teams will all be the de facto Sioux, in practice if not by law. What will the NCAA do then? Force us to choose a name? Should be pretty funny. :D

If I remember correctly, the settlement with the NCAA requires us to adopt a new nickname if we couldn't retain the Fighting Sioux.

If you're serious, its a pretty large price to pay to 'get back at the NCAA'. Otherwise, it'll be a footnote in history 10 years from now...just as it would have been now if the change had been ten years ago.

It does and i'm sure it's legally binding, but personally i thought adopting another nickname was the assumption that most schools would have a nickname and not that we have to have one.

Plus you could make more money with a nickname than without.

I'm going to guess that's not the case, although the news reports surrounding the settlement probably wrote it up something like "UND must switch to a different nickname by" the deadline imposed by the NCAA.

First, I don't think the NCAA cares. Once they got rid of "Sioux", their job was done. Can you imagine the ridicule that would follow an effort by the NCAA to force the University to actually choose a name? Second, if there was a deadline for replacing the name, I don't think the University would be taking the approach it is, which is to set no timeline for the actual selection.

When Matt Greene and the LA Kings brought the cup to Dodger Stadium, Greene stole the show. See links below.

Greene appears at 1:30 of the video and reappears at the end of the video. Funny how the rest of the Kings were escorted off the field, but not Greene, he watched the game from the dugout.
