2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

What do Fischer, Ness, and Holl all have in common? All of them came right from HS hockey rather w/o one season of juniors. That's as big of the issue as any.

I can sort of understand it to a degree because of their draft situation (especially Fischer) but I really feel the coaches should take a hard line stance that you are not coming to the U as a defenseman unless you have a year of junior hockey before you come in. There might be the rare exception to that but I'd like to see them demand more before coming in.

It just seems like a lot of those d-men that come right from HS never reach a comfort zone until half of their eligibility is used up. What good is that?

If I remember correctly Holl came in because of need and not because he wasn't willing to wait. I believe it was Lofquist who bailed and left them with a numbers issue.

Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

I can agree that in general, defense is tougher to adjust to, so just about every player would benefit from a year of Juniors after college, and that it affected all the players you mentioned. I think Alt could have used a year too. But you know how the game is played. Sometimes a player will threaten to go to a different college that will play them right away, or a player leaves early so a prospect skips a year. I have trouble putting too much blame on the coaches for that reason. It is a constant jugging act. It is impossible to predict development too. Look at the jump Schmidt made in one year, then look at someone like Tallackson who looked good at the end of each year, then seemed to step backwards at the start of the next.

Part of Schmidt's issue was opportunity with the defensive coach too.

Certainly I understand you can't play hard ball w/ every kid. But at some point, I do think it is wise to start selling them on juniors. I think Guentzel can do that too. Another thing that could help matters is we have a pretty full pipeline on defense and these aren't one or two year guys and gone. Planning should be a little easier and I would suspect that would make selling some junior time to kids a little easier. Besides, I think some of these guys would be wise to start looking at previous players and their results. Yeah, you have the occasional player that can handle the transition but usually those 1st year guys right out of HS take their lumps more than guys who played some junior hockey.

If I remember correctly Holl came in because of need and not because he wasn't willing to wait. I believe it was Lofquist who bailed and left them with a numbers issue.

Frankly, I would have preferred to see them take their chances on an older low/no scholarship guy out of juniors options at that point and give the young guy more time.

Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

I don't think either were great players, just better than many of the people who constantly say they were bad. I think Schmidt is playing better than either did. But I think they would be in the mix this year. Paranteau, Helgeson and Marshall are all solid but also have each had their share of mistakes. I would guess a Senior Ness would have been 2nd to Schmidt at best, and in the mix with this second group of three at worse. I think he would have been clearly better than Alt and Hall, who have each had good games, but also not so great games. For one thing, if Guentzel is anywhere near the improvement over Hill that most attribute to him, it could only make Ness better. And I still contend, that the forwards are doing a much better job back-checking than the previous three teams, which makes it much easier on your D and much harder to compare the play of the D this year to last.

I am sure you and others won't agree with this assessment, but that is fine.

I pretty disliked the entire D last year, if Ness got more criticism it was because he was a top pairing guy and an upperclassmen. It wasnt like I loved everyone besides him...believe me I didnt :) I guess technically that is expectations since I expect an upperclassmen to play better than Ness did, but that is true of every upperclassmen not just Ness. (see: Helgeson this year)

I agree with Hammy, straight from HS is just too difficult on D.

Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

My biggest beef on Ness is that he did the "discount double check" after scoring a goal last year against AA in the WCHA playoffs.:p;) Seriously, the guy was not good. He was very hyped coming in and, as Handy said, he didn't live up to the hype. Not even close. No one is saying that the rest of the D corp on that team was above criticism. Again, not even close. The whole D corp last year was pitiful. It's just that as an upper classmen, Ness was expected to be at least a solid defender and he was expected to score....a lot(I'm told he did quite a bit of that in HS....too bad it literally never converted into his college game:rolleyes:). He never really did either of those things well, IMO.

This year, as a (would have been) senior, he would have been in the lineup just given his experience. Maybe Guentzel would have made a difference, who knows? I just don't miss the guy. I am ok with guys like Parenteau and Holl over Ness. Holl has shown flashes(as well as blunders, but who hasn't shown blunders on the D corp this year?) and I hope he can put it all together in the second half and/or next year. Parenteau, although not having any points this season, is a solid defender with a physical presence. If he is paired with Schmidt all year he may come into some points in the second half.

EDIT: Back to the "discount double check" for one more comment....I saw Goldy do the "discount double check" move after playing "football" with a fan who was tossing a "football"(aka one of Goldy's gloves) from the stands during intermission. I don't understand why the green gay idiots can't stay in sconnie and leave us alone. Oh well, 13-0 and losing to Kansas freakin City kinda makes up for it. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

makes up for what? 13-1 is still a ton better than 2-12 not to mention Green Bay actually has Lombardi Trophies. I know Minnesota is so proud of their WNBA title and all and Wisconsin will never match that but the fact that you're all up tight about a "discount double check" is pretty pathetic.

You must be a Packers fan.

Per multiple Twitter reports: Bjugstad to miss WJC exhibition games with shoulder injury.

<A HREF="http://twitter.com/ThePipelineShow>ThePipelinShow</A> was first to report it.

Nobody can diss out WNBA title, Nobody!!!

Did you miss the fact he's dissing a player on his own team for doing it? He's "up tight" because a highly touted player went overboard celebrating on one of his very few goals that didn't mean too much. That only makes us realize how much of a bust he turned out to be offensively. Why you'd rip on him for that is a little confusing to me.

Convenient that you left World Series championships out of your comparison.

how exactly is Ness or some Gopher Fan a "green gay idiot," and why shouldn't I be upset that he's calling packer fans "green bay idiots."

As a Brewers fan, I have never once called twins fans "minnesota idiots" for supporting their twins or being excited about them, that's the difference.

Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

Seriously can we stay on the topic of Gopher hockey?

Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

I don't know - arguing about where Ness would be in the lineup is a bit of a pointless argument. :p

A far more pressing issue is whether or not this team will solve its Friday night lethargy and what exactly the coaching staff can do to correct it.

Can't a guy get excited about putting the puck in the net? In your infinite wisdom what would have been the correct goal celebration?
