2010 Superior ShowCASE: tUMD, MTU, NMU, and LSSU

Re: 2010 Superior ShowCASE: tUMD, MTU, NMU, and LSSU

They played shakey the first two periods then really picked it up in the 3rd and they had somewhat of a chance @ the end but if i recall right he had a tough angle

Re: 2010 Superior ShowCASE: tUMD, MTU, NMU, and LSSU

sounds like NMU had a chance within the last ten seconds. But missed the net.

They also had a wide open net against Tech in OT and missed it. They played alright this weekend, they just couldn't finish enough chances. Walt will whip them into shape by Christmas at the latest - I'd bank on it.

Re: 2010 Superior ShowCASE: tUMD, MTU, NMU, and LSSU

I think everybody did good this weekend considering its the first week

Re: 2010 Superior ShowCASE: tUMD, MTU, NMU, and LSSU

Fresh back to Marquette from the Soo. 2-0? I haven't been able to say that since I arrived at Tech.

Without having much of a preseason in college hockey (2 weeks of practice and a game against a Canadian school), teams are not going to be at full potential in the first month. I really don't think that we can draw any conclusions from this weekend beyond the fact that these games will be a part of the final standings. The teams will get better, and due to skill level and chemistry, some teams will become a higher level of better than others.

But I like what I have seen from Tech. Passes are actually being completed, and chances are being created. The power play moves the puck well, and there doesn't seem to be as much losing it out of the zone on our own accord. The defense has had breakdowns, but they seem to be getting better at forcing shots wide and high.

I do have to question LSSU's strategy in the third period tonight. Down 3, 9 minutes left in the game, I look over and the net is empty. Pull your goalie with 9 minutes left?!?! It was amusing to see them try to 'line change', pulling the extra attacker to the bench and the goalie back on the ice on the fly when possession changed. One minute I look down, goalie in net. Then he is gone. Then back again. It also led to a bench minor. It was very bizarre, but I do have to give them credit for trying something out side of the box.

Tech had a killer instinct tonight to put the game away. I liked it.

It was a quiet 2,900 in the Soo tonight. The place felt like Munn as far as morgues go.

Oh yeah, and as we chanted to Lake State at the end of the game "Ring the Bell! Ring the Bell! Ring the Bell!"

Re: 2010 Superior ShowCASE: tUMD, MTU, NMU, and LSSU

Tech has great fans and your team played a real sound game. The play of your net minder was a big key to the game, the Lakers could not beat him even when they started clicking. Good luck the rest of the way.

Sometimes Dreams Do Come True...

I'll be at both games and I predict Tech is gonna ring that bell loud and hard in the Sault this weekend after squeeking out a one goal win in Marquette the previous night. Tech comes home starting the season 3-0 and makes the long drive home much nicer. I will further the predict that Tech scores at least 7 goals on the weekend and racks up 5 times that amount in penalty minutes.

Go Tech!

One goal win in Marquette - CHECK
Tech comes home 3-0 (I'm counting Ni****ing 'cuz we need every win) - CHECK
Scored at least 7 goals - CHECK
Penalty minutes, did we get 35? - Nope sorry, (23? according to the box scores) but if I had gotten all the preditions correct I would be buying lottery tickets this week.
Did I ring that bell? - Heck yes, DOUBLE CHECK (Although next time I need something metallic for a better resonance...)

First time in 10+ years I have gotten to see Tech win two games in a given weekend - well worth all the miles. Even managed to win an LSSU jersey in their auction at the Sat game to add to the collection. Gained a new respect for the atmosphere at MTU home games. For as much as we would like to see our own crowd improve, a bad game at Tech is heads and tails above a really good game at some of these other rinks in the CCHA. (Did LSSU give their rink plans to NMU when they wanted to build the Berry? Could those two rinks be any more cookie cutter copies of each other?) And whoever was complaining about the Misfits standing during the game has either never been to a concert or is just lazy. If you can't see, then stand up or move to another seat. Problem solved.

Right now I'm hold the Superior Cup over my head in victory. But of course you can't see it because it doesn't exist. Maybe I can just find a large "laker" at the beach this morning as a substitute...

Re: 2010 Superior ShowCASE: tUMD, MTU, NMU, and LSSU

I actually like the Taffy Abel somewhat more than the Berry. The visitors bench side where they stick opposing fans does feel a lot like the Berry, but the home side has a bit more height. It also helps that the Taffy has NHL-sized ice, working to avoid the illusion that you're a million miles away from the action.

The Berry was clearly built to suit both hockey and basketball crowds. Unfortunately for hockey fans, that requirement resulted in a shallow seating bowl which gave the extra large ice surface bad sightlines, particularly in the corners. Many multipurpose arenas have this problem.

Also, it was built for the US Olympic Speedskating program that is running here.

Lake State fans complain about EVERYTHING. Doesnt surprise me to hear that they complained about the Misfits standing. Congrats on the two wins.

Actually, the Berry blows for basketball too. You end up really far from the court. I do think they bring in a few rows next to the court, but if you end up having to sit in the hockey stands, it feels like you are watching it from a mile away.

The Berry is a great venue for speedskating. It is a decent venue for concerts/comedians (I saw Bill Cosby there). But to be a jack of all trades means to be a master of none, and the Berry is definitely a master of none. If you watch a game at the BEC, my suggestion is to watch it from where I did on Friday night: standing on the concourse level behind the net in Section 6. Any lower than that, and you lose sight of certain parts of the ice.

Unfortunately, there are no students left at Tech or NMU that were there for the games in Lakeview Arena. There are certainly community members and alumni, but the students now don't know what they are missing. I watched games there as I grew up, and it was an amazing place to be. My favorite spot to sit was front row in the Mezzanine to the side of the band. There are special spots in sports that are hard to find. The overhang in right field at Tiger stadium is one. The Mezzanine at Lakeview is another. It is basically comes within 3 feet of the ice, about 15 feet above it. The visiting team also came off the ice right below it.

I understand the want for an on-campus arena, and an Olympic size sheet, and having a home for both your hockey and basketball programs. I realize that it was either build a new arena, or renovate Lakeview. I also realize that at Lakeview you are fighting for ice time with many other teams. But you lose so much by moving into a building like the Berry. (If the Berry were built like Lakeview, just with the big ice sheet, it would be a moot point.) There was very little wrong, except for the fact that NMU didn't own the ice they played on. Hedgecock was a good basketball facility, Lakeview is a good hockey facility. The Berry lacks in both realms.

As a side note, I remember one night at Lakeview while I was in high school when dog treats were dropped onto Ferris State players as they came off the ice. I also remember visiting teams taking target practice at hecklers during warm-ups.

I guess the point of my long post is that Lakeview was a building with a lot of character. The Berry is like a lot of other multipurpose arenas built. And college hockey was built on the character of the individual schools. I am thankful every day that Tech still has the Mac.

Re: Enough Said

This was the best image I captured at the MTU v LSSU game. It ranks right up there with the shots from the Marquette Wendy's which was taken over by the Misfits following Friday's win over the 'Cats.

A friend of mine owns that banner. I made sure to remind him to take it on the trip - it also put in an appearance at the Taffy two years ago.

Wendy's? Seriously, Wendy's? Do people not have a taste for good food anymore?

Was that photo taken during the first intermission? I don't remember us using the banner, but I missed the first intermission trying to get a (really awful tasting) hot dog and (decent for the price) pretzel.

Could you hear us from across the ice?

We are, we are, we are, we are, we are the engineers.
We can, we can, we can, we can drink all of forty beers.
Drink up, drink up, drink up, drink up, and get on the bus,
were goin' to Wendy's cause we don't have one by us.
