The Red Wings lost. This is a successful NHL season.

I'd say you have pretty low standards for success, but then I remembered you're from Minnesota. Low standards for sports teams are expected. :p

The Wings lost because they were the lesser team. I wanted Jimmy to get them to the promised land but it wasn't to be.

Detroit in this postseason reminded me a little bit of New England last year. Still lots of talent. But a little too old, a little too slow, and a little too soft. There were shifts where they played like what you'd expect from the Red Wings. But there weren't enough of them against SJ.

Detroit shot their wad making sure they got into the playoffs. Their record after the Olympics was rather unreal. They looked gassed in some games against Phoenix. They looked gassed in most of the games against San Jose. That said, they lost four one-goal games to the Sharks. Gutsy as hell but ultimately stupid team, but they'll be back and better next year.

I think Lidstrom does a farewell tour kind of season and they'll be rid of Williams and maybe even Bertuzzi too. Bertuzzi played decent but he's a friggin lightning rod for sh-tty calls. I also wouldn't be shocked if Osgood hung it up unless he's content with just collecting a check and working sparsely.

...and they'll be rid of Williams...

Honestly, not having to watch him wear the Winged Wheel any longer is the best part of this second round exit.

That was a mistake signing when they made it but Babcock and Holland figured a guy familiar with the system would work out on the cheap.

Oops.

Odd-arse statistic. Counting an en goal in last year's SCF, Detroit has lost 8 straight 1 goal playoff games.

Personally, I'm indifferent on Bertuzzi. It's obvious that he's not aging well, and he takes bad penalties based on reputation and decreased ability to skate, but for $1.5 mil I'm alright with his 44 pts. even if he is streaky. I guess it'll depend on how much money he wants.

Still, if Lidstrom decides to do one more year, I'd rather take whatever discount he comes at, plus whatever other FA money we have to play with, and sew up Holmstrom for another year (maybe two). Then give Abdelkader and Helm their raises. After that, other than Maltby and Williams cleaning out their lockers, and at least one of Lebda and/or Meech joining them, it's a little hard to say.

I almost forgot that Ritola, and I think Kindl, are also out of minor league options, so next year they'll be up with the big club.

I never knew if your stick hit someone on a follow-through it wasn't a penalty. I disagree with that rule. You should maintain control of your stick at all times.

And Bieksa scores to make it 3-0.

You didn't? I totally agree with the rule, what are people not allowed to shoot anymore?

Well there are plenty of situations where a stick gets lifted into someone, and the person who's stick was lifted gets called because they "have to keep control of your stick."

If they are going to call those, then they should call ones on follow-throughs, that's all.

Sidenote: If a player starts bleeding on the ice, what do you think about video review to see how it happened, if the ref missed a call?

Re: 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs: Mega Sharks, Giant Octopus, Sid's Stache and Other Horrors

There should be no video review to assess penalties. The game in which Avery hit Thomas in the face and then the refs watched the replay and assessed Avery was a dark day in reffing history. They both should have been suspended for that violation of the rules.

Sure, Avery deserved the penalty but you don't get to use replay to assess penalties. If so, why not take the refs off the ice and put them in a booth to watch the action.
