Re: 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs IV: "The game puck just got Prongered"

Who didn't see this coming? Anyone? Anyone?

Yeah, pretty obvious it was do and/or die for them this year.

I knew they were in deep ****, but I didn't realize they'd blow the cap away with all the kid bonuses to the point of *already* being 3.1 over their cap for 2010-11.

Given the way the cap is, and the max salaries, etc etc, many saw it coming. To THIS extent? No. But we all know that "over the cap" is "over the cap" whether it be 100K or 4MM. I could see a lot of interesting cuts. Not knowing the true financials on cap hits, could Hossa be flat out released? They brought Hossa in to do what they did: win the Cup. Job is done. Is he?

It'd cost Wirtz 36 million dollars up front. He may not be his dad, but that's just plain crazy.

Ok, they are proper f*ed.

Too bad. If I were CHI and could somehow do it, you keep your youth. Period. No way they can do that without shady dealings/etc.

Re: 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs IV: "The game puck just got Prongered"

Pardon my ignorance here - what does that mean? That they have to dump salaries for next season? Or does the organization get fined?

Had Chicago not won on Wednesday, would Game 7 have been last night or tonight?

As I understand it their salary cap is less than everyone else's next year, and there is no fine.

So, they can go over again - who's going to stop them? If they want to enforce that, there needs to be more of a punishment. Maybe losing a draft pick or something.

They went over this year because of playoff bonuses and performance bonuses, which get enforced next year by reducing their cap in 2010-2011.

Chicago just getting a taste of what Detroit has dealt with for the past few years.

No fines that I know of.

Basically, because of Kane and Toews statistical seasons, and Toews' Conn Smythe, their cap hits which were 850k became 2.9 and 3.7 or something like that. Since Chicago's "official" cap number ended up being over 60 million because of that, the amount they're over this year becomes "dead" money in next year's cap, like if a 35+ guy retired or you bought out a contract. So while the league cap next year is going to be around 58.5, these bonuses will only allow the 'Hawks to spend closer to 54.5-55 million, and they currently have 14 players under contract at 57.6 million for next season. Dumping salaries is a necessity, either into the AHL or if they can find someone to take their worst contracts (Huet/Campbell). Failing that, they'll lose a chunk of their depth and fall back to the pack some.

Edit: Next year, something like this isn't possible, because there's no "bonus cushion" with the NHLPA having the option to open up the CBA after the season, like the 2008-09 year. A team with ELC deals that include large bonuses like this will have to start the season assuming all will be met and the 850k cap hit will be 3.6 or whatever for the season.

If they go over by signing players, the NHL will simply not approve the new contract.

I'm starting to think SteveP is a hired goon by the site. ;)

I'm starting to think I don't care since DGB is farking hilarious...:D

Thanks GLM, but my goon days (at least on the ice) are far behind me! :D

But North Star hit the nail on the head -- DGB cracks me up and has the same morbid sense of humor about my Leafs! ;)
