Camel on a stick this year! Also, deep fried bacon cheddar mashed potatoes. FRIED BOLOGNA. This is going to be sweet. Can't wait for Rush and Weird Al.

Re: 2010 Minnesota State Fair

Not interested. If I wanted to watch a bunch of fat people wandering around...I'd go to Wisconsin.

Re: 2010 Minnesota State Fair

I'm going tonight for sure. As I mentioned in another thread, I'm going to watch the 4-H beef heifer show. I supposed I'll eat a bunch of stuff while I'm there also. Disappointed that they didn't get Deep fried butter on the menu this year, I was really looking forward to it.

I want to go back another time, but I can't skip work and I'll be out of town from next Friday through Labor day. Busy Saturday. So the only other chance I'll get is Sunday.

Re: 2010 Minnesota State Fair

Plan to take the wife and kid next Tuesday (first day I could get away). Hope I can get them over earlier than we usually go.

Re: 2010 Minnesota State Fair

Honestly, the best time that can be had at the State Fair is Saturday night of Labor Day weekend. All of the open class shows are over Saturday afternoon, so we put all of the animals outside, close the doors the barns so the city folk don't come in, and we break out the kegs and liquor. Honest, awesome fun.

This is not a State Fair santioned event, thus technically, we aren't supposed to bring booze in, but we don't let the State fair officials into the barn either, so it doesn't really matter

Re: 2010 Minnesota State Fair

How much do they charge for the all you can drink milk these days? I remember when it was a quarter.

Re: 2010 Minnesota State Fair

I remember going back in high school and saw this guy walking through the Midway...He had a pitcher of beer in one hand, swastika tattoo on his other arm, pushing a stroller with a baby in it.

Re: 2010 Minnesota State Fair

Be thankful you don't have this yet.

I avoided it.

I miss going to the MN fair every year. WI's just isn't the same. No Bucket O' Cookies (though we do have 25c milk in several flavors, courtesy Sen. Herb Kohl), no TV stations doing live broadcasts, music too loud for the size of the venues, and all the vendors/hawkers/politicians in one building that takes you three hours to go through. The only thing that WI's fair has on MN's is TWO vendors of wonderful, way-too-expensive-for-me yarn and spinning fleece.

Someone send me a real Pronto Pup and a picture of the state's biggest pig!

Oh, and if you do go, visit the pioneer house at Heritage Square. A good friend of mine is an interpreter there this year and he is a very talented, self-taught musician who plays a number of instruments and has won awards for his harp playing. He plays music from a number of countries as well. He is also a talented hornworker. Tell him the chaplain's wife from Clann Tartan sent you (if he looks puzzled, use the names "Catriona" or "Heidi" and he'll know), and be sure to leave him a tip because he is Just. That. Good.

Going on Sunday and very excited. I am going to be Champ at the parade so if you're in attendance that is me!

I want the classics (Sweet Martha's Cookies, Milk) plus weird food like Camel or Crocodile!

Can he make Tom Thumb Donuts? No? Then he's not that good. :p ;)

If all of the other college mascots are going to be there, can you all gang up on Goldie?? ;) :D

Re: 2010 Minnesota State Fair

Just got back.

Heifer show was good, but predictable. Maybe I should judge in my free time.

Tried the pig ears. I suggest you don't do the same. They were bad. They had a crunchy batter on them but they were still really chewy, I could tell I was chewing on cartilage. Then the seasonings and dipping sauce made them taste burnt.

Also tried the chicken fried bacon. This was much better, but I don't think I'd get it again, there is other food there I'd much rather eat. The dipping sauce was very good, but I'm not convinced it was the best for bacon, it was very sweet and maple flavored when I think a spicy chipotle sauce of some kind would have been better.

I spent a bunch of time in the home improvement building, since there is some work I need to do on my new house and I wanted to get some ideas.

But the best, or maybe it was the worst, part of the night...Boyz II Men were playing at the Leine's bandshell. It was a free concert so there were a bunch of people there. I watched as we walked by, but it was so bad we never slowed down. But, tomorrow and Saturday nights The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band is playing there! That would be an awesome show! I'm trying to figure out a way to go...
