Re: 2010 Maine offseason: a lazy summer on the Stillwater

Sophomore year, wasn't it? Freshman he was steady as a rock.
No, Jimmy was super-solid during his sophomore year, posting an NCAA-record GAA of 1.19. I believe he had mono the summer before his freshman year and while he often played very well, he wasn't as consistent as he was during his sophomore and junior years. His GAA as a freshman was around 2.45, while Frank Doyle's GAA was below 2.

Jimmy was solid before World Jrs

I agree entirely, but the key word is the "before," he wasn't the same Jimmy afterwards. I think Doyle is the most underappreciated goalie Maine has had in the past decade or so - I would have been happy to have him as a badger any day.

Not under appreciated by me or many others. Jimmy was and is a star but Frankie would have started at most other schools without a doubt.

Actually he played really well when he came back he was 4-1 1.98 gaa and .943% in his first 5 games back including Maine's first win at UNH in 5 or 6 years. He fell apart the second weekend of February and was pretty bad in 5 of his last 6 games.

Re: 2010 Maine offseason: a lazy summer on the Stillwater

I'm certainly not convinced of that. Willy was Willy. He was what he was....sometimes decent, often not. You never knew for sure what you would get from here on any given night. Consistency certainly wasnt his strength. That being said, its been awhile since we've had a season long consistent goalie....Howard?

While we're talking about goalies at Maine, can someone give me the backstory on Lundin? I mean looking at his stats he was pretty good but that doesn't always tell the story and I can't remember seeing him. Why did Timmay run him out of town? I remember some anti-Timmay rants after the episode there but a lot of this stuff only comes out later on after these guys leave the program. Clubhouse cancer? Bad work ethic? What was it?

Re: 2010 Maine offseason: a lazy summer on the Stillwater

Matt Lundin was NOT a Club House Cancer...if anything he was a TEAM player that got caught being at UM with Jimmy Howard then Ben Bishop...he should have been given a chance during his stay when Bishop was on board...but Whitehead has NEVER been into a two goalie rotation...he..{Lundin}..wanted to go on later and have a chance at playing Pro Hockey...he moved on to get the chance to be seen..{Mercyhurst}..He was a Great Kid,sadly he did not get the CHANCE.

Wrong place wrong time, Jimmy then Bishop. Lundin had a bad game a few games before the end of 2006 reg season? and Tim announced Bishop was the man for the rest of the season Matty finished out the year and left. I don't believe Tim handles goalies very well, he had issues with everyone of them if you ask me.

Should be interesting to see who will shine this season............Who do you think will be getting the first opportunity to start first real game?

Depends on who's in shape and who looks best in practice.

...All three have a chance, and YES coming in Shape won't hurt either...they have a ideal start of the Season by playing a Exhibition game on Sunday Oct.3rd vs Acadia...my idea would be let each play one period,NO matter what....then they have the following week UML and UConn,a start of the season that could get all three some playing time before they travel to Michigan State then return home for North Dakota.

Re: 2010 Maine offseason: a lazy summer on the Stillwater

Why do you say that? Which new goalie would be coming to Orono?

Wally's saying Sirman's going the way of the dodo bird. He might be right. It's unusual to have 3 legit possible starters on a roster.

I hope I'm reading his tea leaves right, but he's reading Whitehead's tea leaves as saying, if Sirman had any chance, he'd be bringing in either Oulette or the other guy to compete with him, not both.

Re: 2010 Maine offseason: a lazy summer on the Stillwater

If all 3 had a chance, only 1 new goalie would be coming here this fall.
...I still say all 3 have a chance...a new camp...Sirman was out of shape from the get go when he arrived at Maine last year...he knows he'd better be in Shape and ready as BOTH Ouellette and Sullivan are coming in with the knowledge that he didn't endear himself to the coaching staff and that he struggled big time at the end of the season when given the chance to play...right now Maine is in a Question-mark situation in net...HOPEFULLY one or two can take advantage and run with it...if not then your looking at a high scoring maybe .500 team...with goaltending and that being good to solid then this team can make noise's this season...

Bingo

Re: 2010 Maine offseason: a lazy summer on the Stillwater

Sirman had opportunities last year to step up and perform. For whatever reason he looked really "rattled" and appeared to lack confidence. Tim may have felt he couldn't rely on him for this year based on what he saw from him. It's another year and he's a year older. Let's hope he has developed in these areas for the coming season and that he can be counted on. I would guess that all three are starting out on a level playing field.

Re: 2010 Maine offseason: a lazy summer on the Stillwater

I think the best goalie will play. I do think Sirman will have to outshine the others by a wider margin; it'll be interesting to see how Whitehead handles it when one of them struggles. Does he pick a number one out of camp? Does he go with a true rotation? Did he learn anything from the way he handled Bishop and Lundin?

...I'm hoping to see a 2 goalie rotation...with that said do you or anyone else believe that Whitehead has changed and would go with such a idea...maybe yes/maybe no...if NO...then you can bet there will be some unhappy netminder campers. Time will tell...what is missing at Maine is a Coach behind the bench that has any clue on how to handle goaltenders.
