Re: 2010 Maine offseason: a lazy summer on the Stillwater

With the NHL Draft in full swing today, does anyone think that incoming Freshman recruit Martin Ouellette gets drafted? My guess if he does get selected that he'll be a late rounder. Somewhere's in the late 6th or 7th round.

Great story on Austin.....sheds a little perspective on his decision not to come to Maine. Sounds like a good kid.....

That's quite a responsibility for a teenager to become the bread winner of a family that large. It definitely provides more clarity on his decision to become a pro ASAP........plus, it's not his fault that Maine was dumb enough to commit resources to recruiting him plus a half a dozen others that had no intention of going the college route.

Sounds like he made the right decision. Good for him, still wish he'd have come to Maine:D

Yep. Great story and the right decision for him. But it also tells you the type of kids Maine is trying to bring in, which is a good sign imo. :)

I don't understand this. What did Maine lose by recruiting these kids?

Re: 2010 Maine offseason: a lazy summer on the Stillwater

Well nothing ventured, nothing gained! And to me the only bad publicity was generated on these boards!

Having well known recruits turn you down after verbally committing doesn't look good if you ask me. I think you have go after the best players you can though so....

Wasted time
Wasted money
Other recruits(?)
Bad publicity

Those are legit resources to expend, it kept Maine's name in the elite recruiting circles while the team absolutely stunk. And EVERYBODY loses guys to the CHL: Michigan lost Campbell, for example. Unless you are BC and can walk into any New England prep school and pick out the best kid each year, or BU who are basically the USNDPT's graduate program, you need to take chances to get elite talent out of Canada (yes, I realize Watson is American, but he was an OHL risk that New England prepsters aren't).

Maine's recruiting classes coming in seem solid, and I don't see any big names going elsewhere that you can say "man, I wish Maine had gone after him!" So what was lost? If there were kids from like New Brunswick or Nova Scotia or even Quebec that were eschewing Maine for the Boston teams, I'd be right there with you saying the wrong guys are being targeted. But that's not happening. The one kid who "got away" recently that we could possibly decry is Dumoulin. But a.) Maine certainly made the effort there, and b.) he falls closer to the BC recruiting wheelhouse anyways as an 18ish year old New England prep standout. Maine's program was built on Canadian talent, and will live on Canadian talent. Unfortunately, with the way the hockey world is skewed right now, the equivalents of the Kariyas, Montgomerys and Roys are staying in the CHL.

So what do you want Maine to do? Go after second tier New England kids? Maine isn't going to get a kid from Nobles that is offered by BU/BC. And Maine is doing that anyways with kids like Harris and Brown.

Stick with the overage Canadians that were the backbone of the late 90's early 00's teams? Those overage Canadians will always be there as late signings after Maine uses "theoretical" scholarships on Watson and Ashley.

If you want to see Maine in the top 5 again, it is going to have to be creative. So if that creativity ends up in some swings and misses, fine by me.

It's not happening because they are smart enough to not recruit them! In fact, no one in Hockey East is recruiting them. Thankfully, it seems like TIMMAY has learned his lesson and Maine's recruiting is finally picking up steam and targeting more appropriate recruits.

Re: 2010 Maine offseason: a lazy summer on the Stillwater

and Maine would have to be a 1 maybe a 2 seed to even be in that regional i would think. I'd go to Portland (and I do) in a heartbeat even if there was no hockey game, it's a great city............Bangor? it's so much further and doesn't resonate in people's minds like Portland does but i think it's a great idea to move from Manchester and share the event and let Maine have it

Portland > Worcester.

Exactly. If you get a commitment from a 15 year old and they back out at 16 and a half, you still have plenty of time to fill in that gap with an "appropriate recruit."

They're still getting some "younger" recruits (17/18 year olds).......the big thing is that they are not going after these kids that everyone and their mother knows are NOT going the college hockey route. When Maine started getting commitments from the Franciscos, Watsons, and Ashleys of the world.......it was all over the internet that none of them would actually show up in Orono. If everyone else knew this......then maybe it WAS a waste of time and resources to recruit them.

Re: 2010 Maine offseason: a lazy summer on the Stillwater

To be the best, you go after the best. Regardless of the potential outcome. If you settle for second best, you'll probably end up with it. Nothing lost in this venture at all.
