Nice find!

I guess that pretty much answers what they have in store for Alfond renovations. Hopefully, it will end up being slightly better than "lipstick on a pig".

This is all being driven by Hockey East. Every school in the conference was given a list of changes they had to make. That is why you have recently seen renovations at Tsongas, Lawler, & Mathews.

Re: 2010 Maine offseason: a lazy summer on the Stillwater

OK, so what specific changes was Maine required to make ?

The RFI for designers specified:
"...removal and replacement of the ice arena chiller/ice making and permafrost prevention system, the addition of a de-humidification system, and HVAC/Mechanical ventilation improvements...a sound system, lower area seating, dasher boards and glass."

Not sure Hockey East gets to the level of specifying what seating or a sound system should be.

They should tell UMass to raise the back glass height behind the goals so that fewer shots go into the netting. I am baffled as to what needed correction at the Tsongas.

The changes at the Tsingas were a short list, but pretty specific
1. No more than 80% of the fans can go to games dressed as seatbacks.
2. Scott and Mary MUST educate at least one person to replace patronick as the 3rd Lowell fan to inderstand anything about tge game of hockey

Does anyone know why they stopped playing the Canadian National Anthem at the Alfond last year? They sang it for the first 4-6 games then stopped.

I don't know. Speculating perhaps that it wasn't quite right not to also play the Swedish national anthem. Just no end to it.;)

From the March, 2010, issue of the Friends of Maine Hockey Newsletter:

Q. A reader asked recently why the Canadian national anthem is no longer being sung as part of the pre-game ceremonies at Maine hockey games. Why is that?
Coach Whitehead: Basically, the NCAA and Hockey East have a timeline that we need to follow for pregame ceremonies, and the additional anthem makes it difficult to stick to that schedule. In addition, it’s difficult for the players to stand still for an extended period of time right before the game--they’re anxious for the puck to drop and the game to start. As much as we love the Canadian anthem--it’s absolutely beautiful--we felt it was the right thing to do for the players.

Well, screw it then...lets ditch the canucks and the yanks and just play the Russian national anthem and maybe we'll pick up some more Ruskies on the roster.

Seems like yesterday, but it was 9 years ago today that Walsh passed. Time sure does fly.

That was a sad day for college hockey, that's for sure. I remember being devastated by the news. The league really hasn't been the same since, it had such a great flavor with him doing his thing up there.

I was not totally shocked that the BDN had absolutely nothing in the sports section today.....maybe they are saving a tribute for the 10th anniversary?

I agree. It was more of an event when Maine came to town back then. Sure they always had good/great teams but Walsh added that extra excitement.
I still remember a group of us giving him a standing O as he walked off the ice after getting tossed in his final NCAA game.

Walshy knew it was all about entertainment. Alfond and Maine hockey will never be the same:(

But, a week from Sunday and they drop the puck in a exhibition game:D Can't wait

Walsh wasn't born and brought up in Maine........that's one of the biggest things he had going for him. He wasn't brought up in a place where the terms "excellence", "showmanship", and "outspokenness" weren't four letter words.

Re: 2010 Maine offseason: a lazy summer on the Stillwater

Yep. Remember that day like it was yesterday. Still get emotional thinking about it.
