2010 IIHF World Women's U18 Championship

Re: 2010 IIHF World Women's U18 Championship

I guess you could say my view is a little short sighted, but I really wasn't worried about creating excitement for European countries.
If there's any question about how big a deal this tournament is to other teams/countries, just look at the first article on the tournament web site... The Japanese are calling their 3-1 win over Finland their "kiseki" (miracle) on ice. Congrats to them on a great effort! :)

Re: 2010 IIHF World Women's U18 Championship

I wonder if in an event like this, where the emphasis is more on development than winning, it would make more sense to have multiple teams from the US and Canada. Split North American squads may still be better, but the Europeans should at least have a better chance to compete. If the split was fairly equal, then 3rd and 4h lines would be players currently not making the cut. The cost of sending teams would increase, but then so would the number of competitive games. It makes more sense than at the Olympics, where even a bronze Olympic medal is a huge incentive. For U18, beating a North American team can probably match finishing third, and split squads would greatly increase the odds of that.

Interesting point. They use this concept of sorts in the Mens at U17, with Canada West and East type teams. There are pro's and con's to both.

In Girls Hockey in Canada, Ontario sends two squads to the annual U18 nationals, most other provinces send one team, and Atlantic Canada send one team that represents four Provinces. In earlier years they used to have Ontario Red, Ontario Blue, Quebec, Atlantic (NS,NB,NL+PEI), Pacific (BC+AB) and West (MN+Sask). A good example of evolution over time.

Ontario always sends a top squad (Red) and a second squad (Blue). In some years the second squad finished as low as last place. This year the second squad actually got silver in the eight team field.

Thanks....There is currently a ongoing debate on the Ontario forum about the "deplorable" state of the game in the CWHL/WWHL, following last weeks Clarkson Cup win by Minnesota.

Re: 2010 IIHF World Women's U18 Championship

Wednesday game results:

Quarterfinal #1 - Sweden 2, Japan 1

Quarterfinal #2 - Germany 2, Finland 1, OT
(Note: Germany's game-winning goal was on a power play after Finland's Johanna Koivisto took a major penalty and game misconduct in the OT for tripping.)

Relegation game #1 - Czech Republic 5, Russia 0

So Friday's semifinals will be Canada vs. Germany and USA vs. Sweden, and Finland and Japan will battle for 5th place.

From the game recap...
The power play came as a result of a trip by Johanna Koivisto on Jacqueline Janzen into the end boards that required a stretcher to remove the injured Janzen. She was taken to hospital but her condition is not yet known.

“I think it isn’t good,” Anwander offered, “because she is not the kind of person to lie on the ice unless she is really hurt.”

Re: 2010 IIHF World Women's U18 Championship

Friday's results
Canada 10 Germany 0
USA 5 Sweden 0
Finland 4 Japan 1
Czech Republic 3 Russia 1 (Russia demoted for 2011)

A German player said Janzen will play in today's game.

write-up of gold-medal game:

I don't have much to add; this sentence from the article sums it up: "Tonight’s play was end-to-end, lightning fast, physical, skilled, and eminently entertaining." The only slightest of criticism of both teams is there could have been more back-checking in the neutral zone at times. Occasionally a player was able to skate untouched through the neutral zone. Because all the players are skilled, the opposition had to respect their ability but the player needed to be challenged a bit more.

Announced attendance was 1127. I spoke with a rink staffer and he had never seen the place more full or more alive. It was great to have such a full house.

Hux, did you make in it for the semis/finals? You didn't stop by to say hello;)

LEIGHTON Tara (USA)
Ref in the Championship game. Is a total
DISGRACE to stripes. USA needs to do something about her.

Calls the GWG a no goal. EVERYONE has it on film. Fasthock calls
it a goal. Everyone in the rink called it a goal but, TARA.

Look for her
to ruin USA Hockey Nationals next week in Green Bay, Wisc.

ALOT more explanation (and some video evidence) would be helpful before you neg rep someone like this (even a ref) publicly.

Didn't see the game, but this is from the article above.

The game turned once and for all halfway through the period when Coyne made a sensational end-to-end rush and appeared to score a goal. However, referee Tara Leighton of the U.S. ruled the puck did not enter the net, and the score remained 4-3 for the Americans. The call was gutsy and controversial, but television evidence later suggested it was also correct.

To be honest, I forgot about you being in the box...and the rink staff wasn't exactly accomodating about anyone being on the bench side of the rink..even with credentials. :( ;)

Television evidence? Bullpoop. I have the photos that CLEARLY show the puck in the net. I'll put them up later tonight.
