2010 Frozen Four - Detroit - Fans Helping Fans Travel Guide

Re: 2010 Frozen Four - Detroit - Fans Helping Fans Travel Guide

Just quickly skimmed back through this thread, my apologies if I missed it, BUT

Is anyone going to the Windsor Spitfires at Plymouth Whalers playoff game on Wednesday night?? I REALLY REALLY want to go, but am super broke and can't justify renting a car just for this esp. since I'd have to figure out a way to return it on Thursday and won't really have an opportunity.

PRETTY PLEASE if someone is going (and it's only like a half hour away per google and no border crossing since this is at Plymouth (MI)) can I have a ride?

Thanks,
-Melissa

1. Is there anything to do in Windsor? My son is 20 and wants to cross the border for a legal beer. I have a 17 year old and a 14 year old, so is there anything there worth doing?

2. We are going to the Tigers game on Saturday afternoon. Any suggestions on where to go between the end of the baseball game and the beginning of the hockey game? Also, is there a place we should park for baseball that will leave us in a good spot for the hockey game as well (so we will not have to park twice)?

1. You will want to double check on boarder crossing paperwork...what I have been using to cross aparently is insufficient according to another poster (but for some reason has been no problem). I wouldn't want you to get stuck over there! There was discussion of this a couple pages back in this thread. As for things to do over there...they have a beautiful series of parks along the riverfront that has many sculptures and random pieces of art. There is also a casino, and some good ethnic foods. Ouelette Ave. is the primary restaurant street downtown but there are some other places.

2. There is an underground parking garage beneath Grand Circus Park (Woodward & Adams) that would suit your needs perfect if you are going to be around for the entire day. However it may be a bit expensive. Really anywhere downtown is well connected to the stadium areas, but look on the east side of downtown to park first as that is where the stadiums are located. Most east side parking lots have "event rates" that once your in for the ballgame will carry over for the evening as well.

As for things to do...you might want to stretch your legs after sitting for the baseball game, so I would suggest a walk through Campus Martius Park and down to the beautiful Detroit International Riverfront. There are great views of Windsor and an opportunity to learn a little bit about Detroit's past with the underground railroad monument at Hart Plaza and the St. Lawrence Seaway display at Rivard Plaza.

If you dont want to walk 8 blocks from Comerica Park to the Riverfront, take the People Mover train to the Renaissance Center and check out the past, present, and future GM cars in the "GM World" display. Also make sure to grab some candy from the great candy shop inside the GM Wintergraden...that opens directly out to the riverfront.

Some people asked for parking information, so I added that to the travel guide...I also got a group of Detroit hosts together and we are operating a phone system to assist out of towners next weekend. Here is the updated guide...

For parking, you can park at the MGM Grand garage. It might be a little walk, but it's not bad & the best part it's free & it's secure. You don't have to go into the casino to validate. The reason why it's free is because it is shared with the employees of DTE Energy.

If you park there, you cross Grand River, walk down a couple of blocks and you're right at Woodward.

I was wondering, if we plan on going to the Redwings game on Wednesday night if we should purchase our tickets before hand or will we be able to walk up and buy tickets at the door or are there scalpers etc As for crossing the border, there is a grace period for an indefinite amount of time where a passport is not mandatory, so the documentation stated should work.

That grace period ended a long time ago.

Parking... I park behind the Fox Theater when ever I go to baseball or football. Thursday-no problem, BUT Sat there is an afternoon game at Comerica.
I just hope the game ends in enough time to let the hockey traffic into the same lots. They are fenced and lighted. They are in the rumored to be location of the next Red Wing arena.

Does anyone know where the teams will be staying? I saw on the Miami website that they are staying at the Marriott Renaissance Center, is that the case for all the teams? I suppose it would make sense being a big hotel and the site of the fan festival. I'm waiting for BC to get their act together and post the events like Miami and Wisco!

Sorry for the drive-by post but I have to say that I am still craving another burger from Crunchy's in E Lansing from the last time I was there in 2003. It's worth the 75 minute drive out there.

Well if you are going to be in Detroit, stop by the Checker Bar and pick up the best burger in the nation...okay maybe not that good, but the Detroit News calls it the best burger in Detroit. 124 Cadillac Sq.

Re: 2010 Frozen Four - Detroit - Fans Helping Fans Travel Guide

Thank you. I wrote it, but several people helped me decide what to include....there are a lot of good places but those were the ones we though5 were worthy of the list. Detroit is not the best city in the world, but we do have great food.

And for those that like food...you absolutely must go to Eastern Market (Russell St. North of Gratiot( on Saturday. It is the single most fun place in Detroit. It is an open air market and also has several antique shops, restaurants and entertainment type things. Stop at Burts. Their food come off a 30ft grill that radiates the smell of bbq through the entire neighborhood. Their bbq is legendary in The D.

I believe that is incorrect, as of June 1, 2009 - everyone needs a passport, passport card or EDL to cross the border by land. http://www.consular.canada.usembassy.gov/passport_requirement.asp (this was also verified by an agent at the passport office here).
I don't know whether there might be policies specific to the Detroit-Windsor crossing, but I can verify from personal experience at the Niagara Falls crossing that they will be real sticklers about having a passport or something similar, even just for short trips like that - and, in my experience, more strict coming back into the US than going into Canada.
squaw? or dot? :D
Get with the times, Mookie. In 2010 we say "casino or outsourcing?". :D
For those fans that were in Denver two years ago, there will not be any cool Frozen banners on the Detroit streets that were found in the Mile High City in 2008. Ya know, the ones you might have snagged with the images of players like Paul Kariya from Maine and Marty Turco from Michigan. The 2010 Frozen Four banners seem a bit plain.
I don't know what you're talking about, nobody stole any of those banners.

STATEdude, thanks for all the info. That travel guide is awesome. I've got a few questions for you:

1. What do the yellow and red highlights in the travel guide mean?
2. My group is planning to use the city bus or a cab to get to/from the airport and get around downtown (staying at the Doubletree) without renting a car. If we're planning to mainly stay in the immediate downtown area (with maybe just a side trip to Hamtramck to go to a Polish restaurant one friend really likes), is that feasible?
3. Where will the Call Me Al Tour be? It's not the Frozen Four without running into the Call Me Al Tour.

All the teams are staying in the RenCen.

1.Sorry...the yellow highlights are our top favorites. The red one is a reminder that Cheli's is owned by UW alum Chris Chelios and their tent will be filled with Badger crap.

2. I would suggest using a cab to get downtown even though it is more expensive. The city bus takes 3 transfers to get downtown and the route is not very well marked at the transfer points. I can do it because I know where to expect the changes, but I would really suggest using a cab...when you come back in 10 years MAYBE we will have the train connection built. lol

3. I have no clue what you are talking about...care to describe?

You will love the Doubletree Fort Shelby. I nearly moved into one of the apartments above it, then I found a girl to spend my money on. Make sure to stop by the anchor bar a block away...it's a very cool hockey bar.

The Als are everywhere. You just have to let it happen, like serendipity.

Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but it seems like the 125 bus goes from the airport into the city without any need to transfer and stops along Fort right near the Doubletree. Cabbing still might be worth it to save some time, though.

The Als... I don't even really know how to describe it. Presumably they'll be around.

Thanks again for all the help. I owe you a beer if I run into you in Detroit. We'll be the drunk Cornell fans. :)
