Re: 2010-2011 Patty Kazmaier Thread: FINAL THREE Agosta, Duggan, Stack
I am not sure what is behind the petitioners thought process.. I believe you can e-mail her if you click on the petition..
With all due respect, I hoped you would have your own thought process about the petition before posting it in this thread, with the instruction "sign this petition."
The biggest injustice and the turning point for me in no longer being able to follow its progress was the debacle in 2009 where Vetter was given the honor over Lawler who by far met more of the criteria IMHO than any of the other ten finalists. In fact for the #1 player ever in the game to never win this award clearly shows that something is wrong with the process here.. right?
Ok, thanks for at least giving us something tangible to talk about. We'll talk about Lawler, and we'll talk about Knight too, whose omission is presumably what motivated the petition.
To do well in the Kazmaier voting once you've reached the top 10, you really need (1) a strong endorsement from your coach (2) a strong endorsement from the coaches in your league who happen to be on the committee -- that's 2 coaches for the WCHA. And by strong, I mean they're stronger than the endorsements coming from other coaches and other leagues. That's particularly true for someone like Lawler who didn't have the profile of a typical Kazmaier candidate on paper.
Lawler was also competing against 2 teammates, and Knight was competing against Duggan. If you look at Duggan's endorsement from Mark, which I believe I posted somewhere earlier on this thread, it's full of language that suggests he believes he deserves to win the award. He obviously says a lot of nice things about Knight too, but nothing that's as strong in terms of meeting the Kazmaier criteria. IMHO, Mark wrote the ideal endorsements for a coach endorsing Duggan for the award while still endorsing Knight for the top 3.
The struggle for Knight is she's also competing for top 3 status against some leading candidates from other leagues. As I suggested earlier in the post, it's simply going to be harder for the 2nd-best candidate on any team to compete against strong endorsements from candidates like Agosta and Stack who have dominated their respective leagues from start to finish. There hasn't been a league with 2 representatives in the top 3 since 2006.
I don't have much more to say about the Lawler case. I don't recall if Mark's statements on the 2009 Kaz candidates were publicly released. But again, if the selection of Vetter over Lawler was a massive failure of the process, it starts with the coach's endorsement and the endorsement of the league coaches on the committee.
One final comment -- and I'm not implying this is true of the "snubs" just discussed -- fans for the most part do not have the same access to the candidate academic stats that the coaches and the committee get, though fans can infer to some extent from league All-Academic honors. That can lead to what appear to be snubs, particular when candidates are close. Past winners Bauer and Bendus were extraordinary students, and Vetter was a good student. For the record, Stack is also a good student.
I hope this helps you better understand the Kazmaier voting process, and if you have any suggestions for improving it, please share.
