2010-11 Schedules

Re: 2010-11 Schedules

Who could AIC schedule? (Besides HC) Isn't everyone else's schedule filled?

I'm pretty sure the magic number for tournament eligibility is 20, which AIC gets just from their league schedule, so they could always get dates with club or lower division teams.

IIRC, 25... I don't think AIC is really concerned with getting to the maximum number of games... they probably see hockey like they see the rest of their sports on a D-II/D-III campus.

Re: 2010-11 Schedules

I thought the number was 30. Alabama-Huntsville only had a 28 game schedule a couple of years ago, but with two games in the CHA tournament, that got them tournament eligible.

If AIC were to follow the lead of Franklin Pierce, Stonehill, et. al., I don't think there'd be much resistance from the college hockey world.

Re: 2010-11 Schedules

Maybe AIC is focusing all their resources upon getting me my jersey rather than filling out their schedule.

I'm sure that's it!

If you really want a jersey that bad, just steal one off of the last player to leave the ice after a home game. The rest of the team is already headed out and even if every fan in the building tried to stop you, I'm sure you could fight them both off. (I say this having been to an AIC home game AND HEARING ECHOES.)

It's either 20 or 24. Danton Cole and I talked about this right after the CCHA snubbed UAH; he was able to get over the bar pretty quickly, but what team can really consider themselves viable with that few dates? If you're playing that few dates, you're probably playing 2/3 of them on the road, which means you get what, three or four home weekends? Might as well fold up shop.

Re: 2010-11 Schedules

Ye Olde Championship Handbooke, as of last year, says 20.

I suspect the number of minimum contests a year is intentionally lowballed, in all sports, as a hedge against (a) geographic isolation of member schools, (b) catastrophic loss of facilities, and (c) a program being so overwhelmingly crummy that hardly anyone wants to be seen playing them.

The NCAA's not so much interested in making sure that everyone in their organization is equally competitive, so much as they see everyone has an equal chance to compete in principle.

GFM's right in that a hockey program that can only clear a 20 game bar out of 34 possible is not a particularly healthy program. It's not, however, necessarily the case that they can't have a robust home schedule. It wouldn't be a particularly good one competition wise (and it's not likely this team would be performing well enough in their 20 NCAA games to get a sniff at the national tournament), but they could schedule extra-divisional or extra-NCAA teams (domestic or international) and smooth out any imbalance there, and still have the opportunity to play should they be good enough.

BC has officially been crowned the last to release their schedule and their season ticket order deadline has passed as well without an official schedule although it is known by all as posted on Hockey East:

incredible:rolleyes:  a really aggressive effort by the champs to increase or at least hold on to season ticket(s)/ sales........i bet a few(hundred) in CSOM could do a better job marketing the product

Pardon my ignorance... but... why does it count in the record books? Isn't that the point of playing an exhibition game is that it doesn't count?

In all likelihood, it's because they're both NCAA varsity programs, and you can't not count contests between them as legitimate games. It'd be way too easy to evade the scheduling restrictions by doing so.

As far as I understand it, you can't play games against other D1 games and have it count as an "exhibition"... i could be wrong... I know soccer does it but I know of no other sport which does it. (edit: Basketball does it, but its limited to non-NCAA D1 schools)

I'd certainly think we'd see such a thing more often if it were allowed. It'd probably be cheaper than bringing in an opponent from Atlantic Canada.

edit: OK... from the NCAA manual... it makes no distinction about "exhibitions" and "games"... but it does mention "scrimmages".... so it would appear that you can play a "scrimmage"... but any such "scrimmages" count to the 34 game limit. It is unclear on which contests must count to NCAA tournament consideration... still digging.
