No, but the Twins have to win out and the Tigers lose 2 of 3 to CHW.

MUST win today, otherwise the Tigers win the division. We also have to face the Grienke on Saturday which makes thing harder :(

That and the plethora of #9 batters the Twins have scattered throughout the lineup. ;)

I was really hoping they'd win the division. Losing Morneau was huge, and that pitching staff is.............something.

Oh, well. Not fodder for the Yanks at least. It would be a monumental choke job by Detroit to lose it now.

Agreed.

It could officially end this afternoon.

My realistic hope is that the Twins win today, Friday and Saturday, and the Tigers lose either Friday or Saturday. That way the final game at the dome is at least meaningful.

Twins lead 4-1 in the 4th...but the Tigers have the bases loaded.

EDIT: Baker gets out of it.

Re: 2009 MN Twins Part 3 - It's still not over...statistically

Ugly stat of the day:

No team in MLB history has been 3 back with 4 to play and on top of the standings at the end.

Re: 2009 MN Twins Part 3 - It's still not over...statistically

think of it this way...the Twins are BU right now in last year's FF. Miami of Ohio is Detroit. There's 6 minutes left in the 3rd period. Miami of Ohio has a 3-1 lead. Will the Tigers go into lockdown mode in these last 3 games like Miami of Ohio did?

Doubtful.

Re: 2009 MN Twins Part 3 - It's still not over...statistically

Detroits magic number stays at 2 (meaning Minnesota's elimination number is 2). Minnesota is the last AL with an elimination number. The rest of the league is eliminated.

Colorado's elimination number is 1 and they are the last NL with an elimination number.

At least the Twins will be able to claim "last team eliminated from making the playoffs" (as I think the Dodgers will win or Colorado will lose tonight).

But isn't Colorado the wildcard? Or has something happened in the last 2 weeks that I have completely missed?

Gardy ripped Majaris a new one during his post game news conference, IIRC: "....our guy screwed up and had no idea what he was doing out there or what he did wrong...."

Correct. Colorado clinched the NL Wild Card today. However, they are still in contention for the NL West division title, perhaps that is what they meant by elimination number being 1.

All the playoff races have been decided except who will win the AL Central. I have a feeling it will be decided Saturday, but I'm hopeful that it won't be decided until Sunday (or after).

Re: 2009 MN Twins Part 3 - It's still not over...statistically

The Strib put together their list of the top 10 metrodome moments, not many surprises:

1. Kirby Puckett, Game 6, 1991 World Series - No explanation needed
2. Jack Morris throws a 10 inning complete game shutout in Game 7, 1991 World Series
3. Welcome home party after the Twins won the American League pennant over Detroit in 1987. 50,000 fans showed up.
4. Winning the division championship over the Tigers in 2006, when the team and all of the fans stayed after the game to watch the Tigers-Royals game on the video screen.
5. Jeff Reardon closes out game 7 of the 1987 World Series, the Twins win their first Series.
6. Kent Hrbek hits a grand slam in game 6 of the 1987 World Series.
7. Dave Kingman's popup gets lost in the roof and never comes down, he is awarded a roof-rule double.
8. In 1988 the Twins set the American League attendance record and are the first American League team to draw over 3 million fans in a season.
9. Kirby Puckett's memorial service.
10. Strong straight line winds tear a hole in the roof during a game in 1986, causing players and fans to flee for the exits.

Re: 2009 MN Twins Part 3 - It's still not over...statistically

Thoughts from the Twins on that.

I can't believe this guy's random youtube video is getting national coverage. Is it that slow of a news day? :)

I don't see it being an issue. If the Tigers think it is, they'll deal with it when he gets in the batter's box. If he is stealing signs, that's the risk he takes. Other than that, it's a non-starter for me.

Re: 2009 MN Twins Part 3 - It's still not over...statistically

I always thought you were supposed to steal the other teams signs.

I think Gardy has a point as well, usually someone wouldn't be that blatantly obvious with it, but who knows.
