2009 MLB Thread, Part II: Claimed Off The Waiver Wire

Re: 2009 MLB Thread, Part II: Claimed Off The Waiver Wire

I don't even know who Bruntlett is. A backup shortstop?

Bruntlett is a utility guy for the Phillies. His role last year was to come in defensively for Burrell late in games. He's essentially been relegated to a PH this year, but gets some playing time when infielders get a day off. He also scored the winning run in games 3 and 5 of last years World Series.

Re: 2009 MLB Thread, Part II: Claimed Off The Waiver Wire

The Mets down by two in the bottom of the ninth have runners aboard after Bruntlett of the Phillies makes a bad play and commits an error to get them on base... Only to have the game end on an unassisted triple play turned by Bruntlett to end the game.

That's just... F-cking ridiculous.

1st unassisted triple play to end a game in National League history. Apparently there has been 1 in the AL turned by the Tigers in 1927.

Well this explains why you're a Cubs' fan. Or, you used to be. Whatever it may be these days...

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who shook his head when he read that.

Don't know how many people are paying attention to the NL Wildcard race, especially in August, so if it's nobody just move along nothing to see here.

Great game in Denver between the Rockies and Giants tonight. After Zito and Marquis leave this one tied 1-1, it winds up going into extras. Neither team would score another run until the 14th. The former Phillies mistake and now Colorado reliever Adam Eaton showed why he got run out of Philadelphia by giving up 3 runs in the top of the 14th. But by that point Jim Tracy was down to using Triple A players, so Eaton stayed in. All seemed lost for the Rox as they went to their half down by three, but the Giants BP imploded. After loading the bases and walking in a run (the walk was to Rox pitcher Adam Eaton), Merkin Valdez came in with the bases loaded, 1 out and the score 4-2 Giants. Ryan Spillborgh's took an 0-1 offering to deep right centre for a walk off grand slam home run. With the win, the Rockies take a 4 game lead in the NL WC race, and move within 3 games of the NL West lead.

That's pretty impressive considering they were 10 games under .500 and absolutely floundering when Clint Hurdle was fired. If I'm not mistaken, they have the best record in baseball since that point. What makes it even more impressive is they are doing it without their ace Jeff Francis.

Also, God is taking a major, continuous diarrhea **** on the Mets, as it sounds like Johan could be out for the rest of the year with an elbow problem and potential surgery, as reported to mlb.com by numerous Mets players. This would be the 11th player on the DL now for them. If it wasn't for bad luck, they would have none at all.

I know, it's great isn't it :D? Citi Field sounded like Citizen's Bank North all weekend. Nothing better than pasting the Mets in NY, having our fans completely out cheer them, and this was just the icing on the cake:

Too bad it's the Binghamton Mets.

the tigers guy was a firstbasemen.. caught the ball, stepped on first, and then ran to 2nd to step on that base too..

where was the runner during all of this?

Jitterbugging to an Al Jolson tune with a bevy of flappers while drinking bathtub gin?

He may have been running either with the pitch, or on contact. He may have been at (or even past) 3rd when the first baseman was tagging first for the second out, at which point, it would just be a foot race over the same distance to get to second. Also, the runner would be facing away from the play, not expecting to have to retreat so quickly. That may have given the fielder enough of an edge to make it there first (which kinda makes you wonder where the 3rd base coach was (I think they had them back then)). Either way, that is a strange way to turn the triple play. And people say modern day players are glory hounds!

Too bad it's the Binghamton Mets.

If only. I'd be much happier if it was a team of prospects getting a look, rather than a team of Angel Berroas.

Livan Hernandez is the best pitcher still in the rotation. That about says it all. Wait, he might also be the most feared bat in the lineup. That says it all. Edit: they just released him. Better still.

Even with the pain of last 2 years, I really admire the Phillies for how they built the team and play the game. I dunno why their fans persist in being such a-holes -- it's a great team, enjoy it and be a little frickin magnanimous -- your time getting ground under the wheel of fortune will be back again.

very selfish.. i can imagine the 2b, SS, and runner all arriving at the bag after the firstbasemen.

Livan was never, at any point, the best pitcher in the rotation.
ESPN reporting that Billy Wagner agreed to be traded to the Red Sox, should be interesting to hear what Papelbon has to say.
Wagner is presumably going to be setting up as an audition to try to get a job as a closer in free agency this winter, so I don't know why Papelbon would have much of an opinion, other than that I'm sure he'll think it'll be nice to have another redneck with anger issues out in the bullpen with him.
I think this has been mentioned before since the name sounds familiar, but the best part of this story is that Wagner's agent's name is Bean Stringfellow.
Ooh, thanks for reminding me about that. :D

I know, I was wondering how a first baseman would turn a triple play myself. Looking at the list, they are all 2B, or SS that have done it except for 2 1B.

I'll be sure and hold my breath waiting for a Mets fan to be magnanimous when the Phillies blow goats and the Mets are rocking. I mean what's the point of having a blood rivalry if you can't gloat and kick your opponent when they're down? I would expect nothing less of Mets fans.
