2009 MLB Thread, Part II: Claimed Off The Waiver Wire

Re: 2009 MLB Thread, Part II: Claimed Off The Waiver Wire

In news that will surely make Jen laugh, Gary Sheffield has reportedly threatened to leave the Mets and go home when they turned down his request for a contract extension.

This is directly from the Gary Sheffield Manual of Contract Negotiations, right after the chapter about <a href="http://www.dodgerblues.com/content/features_moments.html#sheffield">throwing your teammates under the bus</a>, and before <a href="http://www.nydailynews.com/archives/sports/2006/11/09/2006-11-09_sheff_is_hot__hot__hot__rips.html">the map of IHOPs in Florida</a>. :D

To be fair, all of those Dodger contracts were stupid. ;)

Re: 2009 MLB Thread, Part II: Claimed Off The Waiver Wire

thanks for the clarification :D I was going to ask in the Red Sox thread, but couldn't find it... ? (not a dig - did it get deleted, or has no one posted?)

have you seen the standings?

Re: 2009 MLB Thread, Part II: Claimed Off The Waiver Wire

I think the Mets broadcast was postulating earlier that part of the motivation for the Red Sox was to prevent the Yankees from claiming him after them. Obviously the Mets aren't going to let him go for nothing so it didn't make a difference, but that is one theory.

The Yankees would not have made a move for Wagner, especially with Damaso Marte returning from the DL.

Thanks for that. I was watching this game at the Race and Sports Book at the MGM Grand and there was no audio and I could not figure out what the hell was going on there. Didn't know if it was a balk, or he said something or what. Bizarre.

The Mets down by two in the bottom of the ninth have runners aboard after Bruntlett of the Phillies makes a bad play and commits an error to get them on base... Only to have the game end on an unassisted triple play turned by Bruntlett to end the game.

That's just... F-cking ridiculous.

I don't even know who Bruntlett is. A backup shortstop?

HA. Ladies and gentlemen, your 2009 New York Mets.

Re: 2009 MLB Thread, Part II: Claimed Off The Waiver Wire

I have a question about salary caps and cutting players among other things...

1. Can a team designate any player for assignment? For example, since I don't like him, can the Cubs designate Alfonso Soriano for assignment just because?

2. For some stupid reason I can't remember if MLB has a salary cap. If so, if the Cubs buy out Soriano, how does that affect the salary cap?

3. Is there ANY way (knowing that no team in their right mind would trade for him) the Cubs can get out from under that craptastic contract they gave Soriano?

The way I see it, the Cubs are going to lose $80 million regardless because no team will trade for him and he's not going anywhere without it. So, what's the point?

By the way, since the Cubs thread is effectively as dead as the Cubs' season, I want to say HATS OFF to Jake Fox today. 4 for 4... a homer... marvelous job.

Marmol didn't blow it. That's good too.

The Dodgers should have swept the Cubs but it is nice to see the Cubs steal one from a superior team every now and then.

Oh yeah, hats off to Dempster for keeping ManRam 0 for 4.

1. Yes.

2. There is no salary cap...which blows.

3. Probably not. It looks like the days of the San Francisco Giants making stupid trades is over.

the red sox designated julio lugo for assignment with over one year remaining on his deal; he is now with the cardinals through the end of his contract - being paid by boston. so its probably not ideal to ever DFA someone with alot of time left on the contract, regardless of $, because you will be paying them either way
