2009 College Hockey Showcase (Minn, Wis, Mich. MSU)

Re: 2009 College Hockey Showcase (Minn, Wis, Mich. MSU)

Another interesting fact is that Denver's Goal differential so far is +5 while UW's is +23. UND is +19. Denver could be getting a bit lucky. Don't sleep on Wisconsin.
Nobody has played the entire conference yet - so applying goal differential at this stage is a bit premature.

It probably is, but a +18 difference between DU and UW is hard to ignore.

Re: 2009 College Hockey Showcase (Minn, Wis, Mich. MSU)

In all honesty I think Wisco is going to be one of the very best in the Nation come the end of the season, and would not be surprised in the least to see them win the league.
That being said I think Varsity Wisconsin's untempered bravado is a a bit premature to say the least. A lot can happen between now and March.

Hopefully a lot will happen to the Gophers. I'm starting to fall 100% in line behind Bakunin. That game tonight has put the first real sliver of doubt about Lucia in my mind. The effort is there. The talent is there. The result isn't. Repeatedly. In my mind, that falls on the coaching staff.

Dude, put down the Robutussin. That stuff is dangerous. You made no sense in your posts. I may not like you, but I don't want you to not be healthy and/or die. That's not cool.

I think you should take your own advice.

Yeah I might be premature on the confidence in my team, but it's hard not to be after tonight. But according to BrentFavrehoven my contention is laughable. Thanks for being a bit more respectful in your posting. It's rather refreshing and you'll get some good rep from me for it.

I'll be here all season. I have season tickets to the Kohl Center so I like to check on what everyone else thought of the night's game. I might disappear in the offseason, though. Then, it's time for Brewers baseball. :D

All I'm saying is you're drinking wayyyyy more KoolAid than I am, which is

A) disturbing
B) knowing solid WI fans (who are a touch over the top, and solid posters/people) who are not as optimistic as you

You might surpass uwbadgers14 at this point. Trust me, you don't want that.

If the talent is there (and I'm certain it is) and the effort is there (rodent fans can offer way more than my 2 games of watching em), then just wait....it will come together.

I mean seriously. IF both Talent AND Effort are there then you're getting bad breaks to this point?

VW - some of us, don't know how many, weren't as confident as you appear to be right now, when UW went something like 18-2-2 in 06. Seriously, UW has a Loooooooong way to go to prove they can take the WCHA, let alone the NCAA this year. They *look* quite promising right now. But that's just it. They're only 4-5 weeks into this.

and as an aside, crowing about your team on these threads is lame. The gophs could be 0-16, and UW 16-0,= at this point and believe me I STILL wouldn't be chest thumping or assuming anything.

Long way to go, and DU, UND look tough. and in the rearview mirror for all of DU, UW, UND, is a certain rat team that never will quit. so be patient and wait for more results. Their fans can bag on Lucia right now, but he gets results, and this season won't be any different in the end. He'll turn that ship around.

Assuming the coaching staff is able to bring it together. I hope they can.

IIRC, 2006 was a year I honestly (not poking fun, not trolling, not doing anything but asking a very honest question) thought that WI could have been one (one, not THE) of the best teams ever. Their GA was outstanding, goalie (Elliot) was unreal, etc etc. Then boom. Injury. Dam near ruined their season (not that they won the title, but it put a hamper on everything after that.

Things happen. So don't start crowing unless you can bring intelligence and not be afraid to take the heat.

Agreed on that last part for sure.

holy chit. Now I gotta go either A. Drink more paint thinner, or b. cleanse my soul somehow for agreeing so much with goph fans this week:eek:

I looked up the conference-only stats; numbers in parenthesis = number of wcha games played:
DU +8 (9)
CC +17 (9)
UMD +7 (10)
UND +12 (10)
UW +11 (10)

If Denver wins tonight, their goal margin will be about the same as UW's in conference play. More importantly, they will be 8-1-1 vs UW's 5-4-1 - while playing essentially the same schedule. Only one of the five series each team has played was against an opponent the other has yet to play (Denver hosted UND and UW hosted CC).

I think I've drank enough for both of us tonight. But then again, you are from WI......:p

*.....I'm having a grand time with a Sconnie. I need more booze. Or a HAZMAT cleansing. :o

After last night, I take comfort in the fact that Brendan Smith will eventually be playing for my Red Wings. UW does look promising.

Many of the UW fans were saying this same thing about UW for the last 2 years. UW's highly drafted d corps didn't translate to wins, goaltending was slightly suspect and UW could not score on a consistant basis, even with a guy like Kyle Turris. The rodents are having that kind of year this year. And I like it. ALOT.

I will say Eaves is still on the hot seat. When thinking about the job Eaves is doing, look at what Maimi and Bemiji St. did last year are doing this year with far, far less draft picks on thier teams. Eaves has way more talent on paper, but, if you look at last year, he got way less out of a team with way more talent. I'll give Eaves a slight pass due to the WCHA's high level of competetiveness, but that right there is still a devastating inditement. Miss the ncaa's? Come on.

If you had to pick a coach to start a team and had to choose between Eaves and tDon, who would you pick? I'd pick tDon.

Re: 2009 College Hockey Showcase (Minn, Wis, Mich. MSU)

I don't believe I ever said UW was going to take the WCHA. I also admitted that DU was a better team. My only point in all of this is that UW is a top tier team in the WCHA and can play with anybody.

As far as last year not making the NCAA's, I give Eaves a pass because when you miss by .0002 of an RPI point, it just wasn't your year. Heck I remember that Denver game where we had a one goal lead with 10 seconds left and they put one of the luckiest goals ever into the net. Had we won that game, Eaves looks a lot better last year.

Eaves is starting to admit that it isn't the greatest thing to recruit NHL first round draft picks. Like I said earlier, talent is great, but it doesn't always translate into wins. He's trying to recruit 4 year players with less upside as well so he's learning as he goes.

If you include the non conference +/- when comparing DU and UW it's not as bad of a sample as you might think. UW's non conference opponents have been New Hampshire and Mich St, while Denver's loan non conference opponent is Vermont. New Hampshire and Vermont are pretty close to each other in terms of how good they are. DU and UW have common opponents in Minnesota, Minnesota St, UAA, and SCSU. The difference is that we crushed New Hampshire, while Denver had a tough time with Vermont and both series were at home for UW and Denver respectively. DU also had to play a tough series with UND, but we had to play CC instead and they look like the surprise of the conference. And one other difference is that we had UAA at home while DU had to travel to the Arctic Circle to play them. Otherwise, our overall schedules aren't too far off. In fact, the Badgers SOS right now is 9th in the country as opposed to DU's being 14th according to the KRACH.

Again, I don't think UW is better than DU. I just think we have a heck of a chance to beat them as well as UND.
