2009 Boston Red Sox

Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

Free-agent third baseman Adrian Beltre has reached tentative agreement on a one-year, guaranteed, $10 million contract with the Boston Red Sox, multiple sources have told ESPN.com and ESPNBoston.com.

The deal will pay Beltre a base salary of $9 million in 2010. It includes a $5 million player option for 2011 and a $1 million buyout, and is contingent upon Beltre passing a physical exam, the sources said.

Beltre batted .265 with eight homers and 44 RBIs for the Mariners last season, his 12th in the league. He was limited to 111 games due to injuries.

Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

Wooo, it's going to be fun watching this team struggle to stay in the playoff picture this year. I'm willing to bet that most of their wins will be "exciting", though, as all they have is pitching, so their wins will probably be close games.

Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

Good but not great signing. A little too much money, but they definitely have enough to pay anyone whatever they want.

This better not be the last bat the Red Sox sign.

heck, it isn't even the first bat :p

one year, who cares. and you are right, they have too much money to know what to do with.

Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

"Great, we're paying $9 million for a 31-year old 3B that's washed up, only hit 8 HR last year, can't run very well, but at least he can play gold-glove defense. This guy will do nothing for the Sox."

That quote is not pulled from any Red Sox message boards this morning, but rather, is what you heard from the Sox fans during the winter of 2005 when they got some guy named Mike Lowell.

I don't expect Beltre to be an All-Star, but he has played his entire career in Dodger Stadium and Safeco. (Warning: Nerd stats alert). His career OPS on the road is 99 points higher than at home, which is a good sign considering those 2 parks. He's also a right-handed pull-hitter. He may put up some decent numbers playing half his games at Fenway this year.

Pitching and defense. They are exceptional defensivly right now. There's no better starting rotation and they have one of the best defensive lineups. Look forward to a lot of 2-1 games (ZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz) but a w is a w....

and a 2-1 W is better than a 9-8 L that ends around midnight with Ugie Urbina/Heathcliff Slocumb/Calvin Schiraldi/John Wyatt on the mound and three power hitting statues in the outfield.

Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

Didn't know if this was mentioned earlier and it was discussed, as I posted before and Keith Law postulated, but Ellsbury is moving to left and Cameron will man center field.

On the brighter side, the games will take less time to finish!! :D

Yeah, but a 7-1 win is even better still! ;)

Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

Don't mind taking a shot with Beltre. What I will say is the team, as presently constituted, is really dependent on Ortiz having a big season. 1 thru 4 in the lineup - top notch. After that though, you really need Ortiz to drive those guys in, because Beltre is an admitted question mark and Drew isn't in a contract year.

I'm far more pleased with the pitching staff this year. No relying on a 50 year old Smoltz or 75 year old Byrd to win games for the team down the stretch. Maybe they do play a lot more low scoring games but I can live with that. Right now they appear to be a playoff team.

What is the lineup, anyway? The top 4 look solid.

1. Ellsbury LF
2. Pedroia 2B
3. Youkilis 1B/3B
4. Martinez C/1B

Then...?

5. Ortiz / Lowell DH
6. Drew RF
7. Beltre 3B
8. Cameron CF
9. Scutaro SS

That was the lineup today on MLB Network, except they expect the Sox to move Lowell after surgery. They also switched Youk and Martinez.
