2009-2010 USCHO Pre Season poll.

Re: 2009-2010 USCHO Pre Season poll.

We should do a preseason USCHO fan poll and look back at the end of the season and see who knows more, the fans or the USCHO voters. My guess is the fans would win. :p
Wormser has done one pre-season and mid-season in the past.

By the way, I agree with NorthernLite. Props to Josh Carey for being willing to put his ballot out there. He certainly doesn't have to do that and leave himself open to scrutiny from some.

Re: 2009-2010 USCHO Pre Season poll.

Seriously. SSC with nearly same record as UMD last year, but in general facing tougher games. Couple losses form last year's squad, but still Salem generally has good luck bringing in talent. I'd expect it to be close.
SSC was in a much tougher league, but with the graduation of the starting goalie and transfer of the leading scorer and a top blueliner, they do have question marks.

The fun part is Salem, with no games under its belt, opens at home against UMD (2 games played) on 11/17. An early season test for both teams. Good seats are still available.

Re: 2009-2010 USCHO Pre Season poll.

Didn't realize having seen a team play the year before was a requirement to rank them in a specific spot the following year when they have new players. I'll keep that in mind. Also see above. Webb had them in the same spot with the same level of having seen them (pretty sure I caught at least one webcast of them last year, but I assume in Derek-land that's meaningless?)

Seeing a team play would bring your credibility to your statement of calling them "scary". I saw Manhattanville play quite a few times last season and although they had a pretty good recruiting class on paper, this Manhattanville team was nowhere near the talent they had the last few seasons and especially their Frozen Four year. They could easily finish anywhere from 1st-5th in their conference. Usually pre-season #1's don't end up finishing in the bottom half of their conference.

If that were true, they wouldn't keep hiring me to do different jobs, would they?

Congratulations. Now you're actually writing for a conference you might get to see play and actually know something about rather than just what the coaches tell you. I think it was smarter on USCHO's part to move you.

I understand how this concept might confuse you, as I'm actually employed in the field I was trained in. Which is why I'm not going to be able to respond to your prattling all season long. Are you really going to keep this up until March, because it's not even the end of October and it's old. Any comments on the actual poll or something hockey related, or are you going to keep flinging mud and seeing if any sticks?

And what relevance does you having a job bring to this discussion about D-III hockey?

You started this whole thing my friend :)

Do you drink your beer from a bottle with a nipple? Are you even old enough to drink beer? Because you seem like a 12 year old girl who still plays with dolls.....

Plenty old enough POYB:)

No dolls or Magic cards for me.

I'm just sick of Carey walking around and talking like he's big (*&^ and taking uncalled for pot shots at me with his real name and sometimes aliases.

Josh was by far the best MIAC writer that USCHO has ever had.

Chris posted a few years ago that the writers' ballots were usually the most objective ones received. I'd try to dig up the post but don't have time right now.

Re: 2009-2010 USCHO Pre Season poll.

For what it's worth, here's mine. It didn't get used. I'll point out that 2-13 are highly interchangeable in my mind and a case could really be made for any at any position.

Stout at #2 as if they get any goaltending at all they should be right there at the end. Adrian at #3 only because they are one of the few teams out there without major question marks so they move up a few spots from where I had them late in the year.

Looking back on this I probably should have had Norwich higher. Like I said though, this thing is an absolute mess, which is probably why so many teams got first place votes. Eight? That has to be the most ever...

1. Manhattanville
2. Stout
3. Adrian
4. Hobart
5. Amherst
6. St. Norbert
7. Plattsburgh
8. Norwich
9. Gustavus Adolphus
10. Middlebury
11. Superior
12. Oswego
13. Neumann
14. Wentworth
15. Stevens Point

Not sure I understand ?
I was curious why M'ville only had 1 first place vote in this thing when two of you guys declared them as your # 1.

Why wasn't yours used....how many are asked to submitt and how many get used ??

Re: 2009-2010 USCHO Pre Season poll.

I do have a vote and it went like this...

1 Manhattanville
2 Plattsburgh
3 St. Norbert
4 Adrian
5 Norwich
6 Gustavus Adolphus
7 Wis-Stout
8 Neumann
9 Wis-Superior
10 Middlebury
11 Elmira
12 Amherst
13 Curry
14 Mass-Dartmouth
15 Hamline

NUProf, any comments?

I think you are being generous. NU has a lot of question marks with so many freshman coming in, but I will admit that the only thing I knew about Kashirsky was that he was from Russia when he first showed up, and he was an impact player from the get go. Some of the O recruits seems to have good numbers coming in, so maybe the next person in the Bellemare/Aucoin/McLean/Kashirsky progression is sitting a classroom in Northfield right now.

The goalie situation looks a little dicey. Klinger will be fine, but with a freshman and a totally untested senior behind him, he's going to have to be good. (Or else the Freshman will emerge as tne next Randy Hevey, who took over the #1 slot as a Freshman and led NU to its first national title)

Only a few (forget how many) writers' ballots are used to round out the poll. So, for example, if six writers fill out ballots not all will end up being used. I know mine wasn't this week as if it were Wentworth would have at least two points - that's also how we know mville's #1 vote likely came from Josh.

So the integrity of this POLL is subject to individual(s) who screen then purge or select which submissions fit their unbiased criteria ? :o :o

Makes perfect sense:rolleyes: ......and now I better understand why the meaningless tag gets hung on this. No wonder there are some surprises in the POLL. There is no continuity or consistency in the data being used. :(

I would have thought that those selected to submit would have enough credibility to have their ballot counted.......especially those who rank Adrian #3 !;)

I believe that the writers are picked randomly from those submitting ballots. The number or writers varies depending on how many coaches submit ballots to ensure that the number of ballots counted remains constant. That's what we have been told before.

Hey, someone had Adrian #1 and it wasn't me or Josh...:)

Otherwise, see above.

Re: 2009-2010 USCHO Pre Season poll.

New England College got 5 votes? Good for them.

Hey, what ever happened to NEC keeper Ron Baia? He put together two good years for them, then disappeared last year. Is he back @ NEC this year (or anywhere)?

I think the problem is, that there is to much "continuity or consistency in the data being used", that is to say an over reliance on historical/legacy information. While certainly the coaches record and historical success, both during the season and in recruiting need to play a significant factor in a preseason poll, so too must the returning players and actual recruits stats. It is the time consuming process of comparing the current team makeups that I believe a majority of the DIII pollsters don't (for whatever reason) do.

and it wouldn't be an NCHA(fear factor)coach...

The NCHA has not played Adrian because it would not benefit them at all. Why put them in the schedule when it does nothing to progress the NCHA team in the rankings and hurt their SOS. They are much better off now with their insulated schedule and throwing in some MIAC teams.

Adrian has all the reason in the world to want to play an NCHA team, but no real draw for the other team. Only the potential to hurt them down the road.

I don't think I'd take the game either.

Re: 2009-2010 USCHO Pre Season poll.

NCHA must be considered one of the strongest D3 leagues with 4 colleges represented in the top10 and 2 more with honorable mention votes
