Re: 2009-2010 UNH Wildcats Season

The only thing is, they have to play with that intensity for 60 minutes. They have blown 2-0 leads 3 out of the last 5 games, lost 2 of them and tied 1. They have two very good opponents coming up in Northeastern and Boston College. Lets hope the boys in Blue can learn from their mistakes and come out flying for a full 60 minutes.

I didn't think UNH lacked intensity in the second period. UVM just came out smoking, after being destroyed in the first period, and kept up the pressure throughout. On Friday, UNH seemed to be a step or two behind all night. Last night, they were hustling, even in the second period.

Re: 2009-2010 UNH Wildcats Season

As for the game - funny how unpredictable hockey is. UVM outplayed UNH on Friday night and lost. Tonight, UNH outplayed UVM, particularly in the 1st and 3rd periods and in overtime and they tied. Madore was unbelievable. One of his dozen or so amazing saves had him doing a total split, like a gymnast, with the puck lodged underneath...well, use your imagination. How he didn't earn the first star is beyond me. The refs were atrocious in the third period, not calling four blatant penalties on UVM. I was pleased to see Hardowa get some ice time on defense. You can count on him to take the body when he's in the corner which is preferable to waving at the puck - an unfortunate habit of some other D-men.

Pretty amazing parity in Hockey East. If UNH plays throughout the playoffs with the intensity they had tonight, they'll do fine.

Re: Madore - I recall a few point blank saves in the second, on Speelman(breakaway) and DeSimone(1 timer from Thompson on the goal line - PP) that could have been difference makers. We'll they were i guess as they kept UVM in it.

Those non-tripping calls we absolutely horrendous, maybe 1 or 2 you could say that maybe UNH stepped on a stick, but all 4??? It's funny, because sandwhiched in between the non-calls(blown calls) DeSimone gets a slashing penalty in the defensive end, giving UVM a PP.

Re: Parity - Yes, not only in the league, but accross the country. Just look, Michigan and MInny are hardly TUC teams. Save for BU's recent surge they wouldn't be in the picture either. Miami has almost no competition in their league.. Denver is a stud team, THAT is for sure. My take is that outside the top seeds you might as well not even pay attention to the seedings.. It's wide open. And even then.. the top seeds will be vulnerable.

Looks like the top 3 lines are set.. I think maybe Umile was giving guys a shot last night on the 4th line. One note: Speelman - I can say now that I'm sold or at the very least looking for him to have a good upturn in production next yr. He was skating hard, with purpose, had good positioning going into the corners and going to the net and got himself a few Grade A chances last night. Last two games I thought were completely different than what I saw earlier in the season. Maybe some time off was exactly what the dr. ordered, pun indended! Not sure if others noticed either or have differing opinions.

UVM did a great job of getting in the lanes

Lastly, UNH goes from an 11th to a tie for 7th in PWR over the weekend. Things can change fast. Still need to close out the season strong.

My 1 criticism: It appears tough to get your PP going when you are dumping and chasing into the zone an not the first ones to the puck, additionally, when you are, you arent' going to generate shooting opps when the game plan is to have 5 guys stand still. Makes it easier for the D to get in lanes, when the lanes aren't moving!!

Good call on Speelman. He did look good, even while nursing a damaged collarbone. I hope he develops into a Moses-caliber sophomore.

The power play seemed a little more effective with LeBlanc on the right point. I thought the dump and run attempts were dictated by the UVM penalty killers standing on the blueline. But you're right - if the dump and run isn't followed by puck control then what's the point? Another minor gripe - although the two point guys are passing effectively to one another, the receiver is taking too long to decide what to do with the puck. This allows the penalty killer to catch up with the puck movement. Take a few more one-timer blasts from the point.

Re: 2009-2010 UNH Wildcats Season

One thing I am always bummed about was never seeing a game in Snively. I started at UNH in 1994, so I saw a couple of games at JFK (nor did I ever see the old MUB bowling alley, or the original Nick's). That said, I am glad I was around for Karl's, so at least I have that artery-clogging memory. :D

Same boat, minus the JFK games :D

Nothing was ever quite like a couple of 'Little guys on the r.. and snotties'! I don't think it, or anything else for that matter quite met OSHA standards! Ahh, those were the days!

Re: 2009-2010 UNH Wildcats Season

So kids... looks like the RS title could come down to the final weekend. It would appear that several if not all of the pinheads will be making the trek north for the Friday tilt. Should be a fun time. Hope you oldtimers all can make it over to say hello.

Will catsfan be buying shots for the group again? And where should we be pre-gaming in Durham? Whatever happened to the Tin Palace? Loved that place and the girls that worked there.

Tin Palace became Ballards a few years back, still a decent place for pre gaming

I should be there for the Friday game. Saturday I will be shooting a wedding some 4 miles away from Conte and can't make it, d'oh!

Nope, we're good for Saturday, but if I hear of anyone looking for a ticket, I'll point them your way.

Ballards is great. It was the place to watch the bruins playoffs. a lot of the guys from the team worked there so it was never hard to put the game on TV. gotta love hockey biased venues.
