Re: 2009-2010 UNH Wildcats Season

absolutely should be a penality. did o'neill get one? bobf says he did get called on it and ambrose says he didn't..

i'm going to the game tonight and will be interested to see if there are any after effects.

as far as pay back on o'neill......hey what goes around comes around;)

Box score does not lie

Goals Scoring/Penalties Time
1st Period (20:00)
MNE-1 Tanner House (2-Boarding) UNH 0x1 0:25
MNE-2 Will O'Neill (2-Slashing) UNH 0x2 4:31
UNH 1 - 0 6x6 John Henrion (2) (Kevin McCarey, Mike Beck) 8:27
UNH (+): 16,20,23,25,14,G29 MNE (-): 91,21,4,5,26,G38
UNH-1 Bobby Butler (2-Hooking) MNE 0x1 10:23

The O'Neill Slashing at 4:31 is when the incident occurred. And for good measure Mr. Butler picked up a penalty at 10:23.

He got one and Butler never missed a shift so I can't imagine it was that big a deal. I didn't see it and the TV coverage was at commercial when it happened so it came after the whistle for sure. I would assume it was a cheap shot if it came after the whistle not sure why it happened, must have been something going on between the 2. I didn't notice Butler Limping or favoring a leg but then I don't see him all the time so.

From my seat in the dungeon, and the haze on the glass, I must have missed it. When I talked to Umile about this, I think his complaint is it should have been intent to injure. At any rate, my bad.

Re: 2009-2010 UNH Wildcats Season

Interesting glance at the box score for last nights game. Attendance shows 6501.;)

Seems a bit of a stretch based on the empty seats I saw around the arena.

No kidding. Start of the game was still 1/3 empty.

Re: 2009-2010 UNH Wildcats Season

It is the start of a holiday weekend... And February break for some NH schools... Seems to me that the crowd files in a little slower on Friday night games compared to Saturday.

Re: 2009-2010 UNH Wildcats Season

Character and legs:

"Things feel a lot better now than they did after the second period," DeSimone said. "That was a little bit scary in the locker room. It didn't seem like we had much life, but we came out in the third and played our game the way we should and the way we're taught to every day." (from fosters.com)

no harm no foul at least on your part.

judging from last nights performance bobby is just fine. 4 goals(1 ENG). nice pass by desimone to spring bobby in all alone for the breakaway goal in the 3rd period to make it 3-2.:D

Re: 2009-2010 UNH Wildcats Season

I watched 4th (and 3rd) line playing time tonight carefully. It may be habit that keeps the 4th line (and at times the 3rd) off the ice. Every time the game went 3 minutes plus (or 4 straight 40-60 second shifts even with whistles) on the game clock without a specialty situation the 4th line took their normal shift.

If a PP happened lines 1 and 2 (with Boresinok) ran the power play and typically who ever started the PP took the first shift after the PP, once the 3rd line was out post PP. However if 1 finished the PP, we went right to 2 after the PP then 3, then reset back to a normal set 1,2,3,4. In this case 4 is skipped. Same would happen on a PK. Generally it looks like as long as 1 isn't on the ice for the penalty, 1 starts the PK (Butler-Thompson) then (Disimone-Leblanc) then (Moses-Boreniok) with Silso also in the mix, pairs pending who is in the box. Generally UNH tried to run line 1 right after the PK. If that is the case we go to 1,2,3,4 if not it will go 2,1,2,3,4.

There seems to be a desire to bounce back from a PK or push more from a PP.

Without many 3rd or 4th liners on the specialty teams their ice time is getting really limited. Based on the patterns Umile was running I only counted two 40-60 second shifts (typical length) for the 4th line in the 2nd period.

I saw very little "shortening" of the bench if the play stayed 5 on 5. It seems the patterns around specialty situations really limit the 4th and some the 3rd lines ice time.

It will be interesting when Burke and Speelman are back. The 3rd line time for McCarey and Henrion should have helped Umile's confidence in those players. The question will be does the patterns of last night change with a deeper bench or is it engrained for year in year out use. Also I don’t see McCarey, Henrion, Burke or any of the 4th lines getting PK time, Burke does pick up PP time and Henrion might with this shot. So in the end it is all about the game staying 5 on 5 for the 4th line to get time.

Re: 2009-2010 UNH Wildcats Season

Excellent observations JB.
I wonder - do BC, BU and other National Championship teams actually utilize their fourth lines more often than UNH? Conversely, is the pattern observed by JB - that is, the fourth line gets consistent playing time only when there are no power plays/penalty kills for extended periods of time - typical of all top programs?

At least for last night, the top three lines clearly had plenty of energy and stamina throughout all three periods. Whether it was by design or happenstance, it is a bonus that Henrion and McCarey have played together on regular shifts for the last three games. I think they have demonstrated that they can play well at the Division 1 level.

Re: 2009-2010 UNH Wildcats Season

I did not follow last night's game or check any scores until early this afternoon. What a great surprise, nice job 'cats. Butler for Hobey!

Re: 2009-2010 UNH Wildcats Season

I've tried to get a message to you off thread CHC but cannot do it....any ideas how I can give you my contact info so I can get those DVD's to you?
I hope everyone that writes here on the UNH men's thread also follows the UNH women's team....with a win tomorrow, knock on wood, 4 teams will be tied for first with 26 points with one weekends play left....the women are GREAT fun to watch and could use the extra support....so let's spread that UNH passion just a bit more!

I don't think everybody on this thread follows the women's team, judging by the number of posters I don't see on the women's thread . . . and it's too bad :(

I'm not sure about BU, but I do notice that Boston College usually has one 'set' line and they tend to move people around on their other three lines. They usually put their fourth line against most opponents first lines.

Interesting. I wonder what York's rationale is? Are the 4th liners freshmen and/or sophomores who happen to be skilled at checking/defense? UNH has had "checking" lines in the past but they were the 3rd line.

I know they've been playing Kreider on the fourth line from time to time. I guess York figures his fourth line is almost as talented as most team's second lines or higher so he has that luxury. Matt Price's line has played against team's top scoring lines all season.

Inside Hockey: UNH midweek conference (02/17/10)

JvR picked a visit to UNH for his Olympic break. He was part of the press conference and Umile joked about getting him in the line up this week.

Also of note is Burke and Speelman both were scheduled to practice and if that was good both could be in the line up.

This on is a JvR interview done in the whitt. Talks about NHL, UNH, TvR.

Inside Hockey is an interesting site. For example they have post game video from UNH vs PC, good stuff.
