Section12, don't bears bears hibernate in the winter? This, of course, is based on my extensive knowledge of bears, which came about mostly from reading children's books. :)

Interesting idea about UVM forwards having an easier time when actually playing a game and not practicing against their own D teammates. Hopefully some truth to that but I can't wait until the UML crew reads that, it'll kill them and they probably will have to comment about how much better their D is.

I can't imagine the UVM offense putting up any more points than last year although they are certainly off to a good start. I do think passing will improve with less selfish play in the absence of Lenes and V. Stalberg but it remains to be seen if they can really snipe enough to convert at a higher rate than Viktor and Lenes did last year. I don't think the DU goaltending was particularly impressive this past weekend, but let's hope the UVM forwards make every goaltender look similar all year.

One area that could certainly improve for UVM is on conversion of breakaways and 2 on 1's. I look at UNH and BC for examples. When you give them a 2 on 1 they bury it nearly every time while we tend to bury a small fraction of our opportunities. Hopefully that changes this year.

I will say that Madore has been pretty good at stuffing those though, better than Fallon was in fact.

Any news on Fallon's progress in the professional ranks?

I only watched Fridays game but it was much more open then any HE game. Like some have said alot of 2 on 1's and up and down play which is not what the Cats usually get in HE play or even in practice. Might not be easier but probably alolt less physical.

Fallon is splitting time with Corey Crawford in the AHL. Chicago doesn't seem to need him and he is at least their 4th ranked goalie at this point. Its too bad for Joe, but barring a trade he is likely to get a shot in the NHL, of course I thought the same thing about Thomas. Of course Tim made the most of his opportunity. But Chicago has again at least 3 goalies that they are currently higher on then Joe.:(

Another great match up this coming weekend with BC. BC seems like a real unknown at this point and will need a lot of freshman success to put them back in top form. Hopefully having a couple more games under our belt will give us a leg up going into this one.

I agree BC is a bit of enigma at this point. Muse has been in goal so York's comments about a Dec. - Jan return were merely a smoke screen. How Muse plays will be a key for BC. Can he play as he did his freshman year? Does he play like last year? Are there any lagging effects from his offseason surgery?

Interestingly Ranked number 12 in the USA today poll BC managed a first place vote. Not sure if one of the voters was asleep at the wheel or if they know something we don't. Either way, it would be nice to see the cats come out and start the season the right foot with a win against BC followed by wins against MC and ME. All three of these should be wins, but getting off on the right foot against BC will be a nice spring board into the season.

Re: 2009-2010 Official Vermont Season Thread

The HE coaches placed BC 3rd and UVM tied for 4th in the preseason poll, and that was under the impression that Muse was out until mid November.

Therefore BC should be the favorite, they come in with an extremely heralded freshman class and we should not forget that they did with the NC but one year back in their second consecutive NC game. They may have had a bad year last year when Gerbe left early and Muse was hurt but they are still an elite team and beating them will be extremely difficult and a significant accomplishment. And they will be hungry to gain respect that they have so quickly seen diminished. Scary opponent IMHO.

Let's go cats!

I'm willing to put money, serious money, that BC's first place vote was by Jerry York himself. How pompous.

Tailgating, Sunday, 3:30, lower level of Gutterson Lot. Who's in?

Unable to watch either Denver game on streaming video, I refrain from commenting, though I think the result of the weekend was great for the Cats.

Looking at the boxscores, though, no Josh Burrows on Saturday night? Was he hurt on Friday? When it was mentioned that Franzon played, he played in place of Burrows. I didn't see any report or mention of burrows being hurt. Was he? That would be a bad break as he has started the season by putting pucks in the net, a gift he seems to have.

Good catch grantfan. Must have suffered an injury as it seems he had 2 goals in 2 games (granted, one was the exhibition game). Perhaps Coach Sneddon will address this in his radio appearance during the week or during pre-game before the BC game?

Looked at the UVM hockey athletic site and there is a new feature. A blog by forward Justin Milo. Nice to see that the team was excited for Cullity getting his 1st goal.

Well, we just got back from Denver on Sunday night. It was a long day of travelling, but it feels good to be back in Vermont. I would have to say it was a pretty successful weekend overall. Coming off a tough loss to the University of New Brunswick last weekend, we wanted to redeem ourselves and start the regular season off well. We knew facing the Denver Pioneers would not be an easy task; they were the preseason number one team in the country with many highly touted players.

We had a short week of practice leading up to Denver due to flying out on Thursday. We focused on our systems, especially our forecheck, and special teams. Despite not having much rest from our game on Sunday, the guys were chomping at the bit to get on the ice and in the weight room.

My days have been a little different than the rest of the guys on the team. I injured my foot before our exhibition game and have been sitting out. I have been lifting weights with the guys and riding the bike to keep my endurance up, but it sure has been frustrating not being on the ice. My foot has been getting better everyday thanks to our training staff.

Both games this past weekend were extremely exciting. We had a great fan base at the game because of a large alumni following in Colorado. Both teams had a lot of firepower and the score went back and forth.

In the first game, Patrick Cullity scored the first goal of his career and all the boys were really happy for him. He made a rush up the ice, left if for Brayden Irwin, and buried the rebound. He definitely deserved it.

Going into the third period we were up 4-2. It looked like the elevation in Denver got to us and we started making some untypical mistakes. Denver kept coming at us in waves and we were unable to hold on losing 5-4.

The next day we studied the game tape at the hotel and knew what we needed to correct. The second game was a lot better. We really put a full 60 minutes together. Coach Sneddon told us winning that second game and earning the split would feel great. It was a full team effort beating the number one team in the country that second night.

We now know we can play with anyone in the country which is definitely a confidence booster. But like always, we need to forget about the games and move on. We have another tough opponent coming up in Boston College and need to have a solid week of practice.

I look forward to giving everyone an inside look at our team throughout the season. Thanks for your support; we have the best fans in college hockey!

Re: 2009-2010 Official Vermont Season Thread

You have no idea what you're talking about.

No its more likely that it was a writer that has horrible hand writing and meant to put down BU. Or maybe it was Nick. Of course it could have just been a bad joke. Hendrickson maybe after picking them to finish 8th in HE, decide he needed to even it out so he threw in a first place vote.

Re: 2009-2010 Official Vermont Season Thread

Back to hockey please. Nick has some special jealousy over UVM, just like some of the UML fans. Just let him go on his narrow little path.

Thanks for pointing out the Milo blog. Cool. They need him back on the ice.

I heard the Sneddon interview on Saturday pre-game and I think he sat Burrows to send a message. I like Burrows offensively, but I think he was on the ice for a couple too many DU goals on Friday maybe. I did not check the stats but I think I remember seeing his number near the DU goal celebrations several times.

It's nice that Sneddon felt he could skate Franzon, it's a luxury that was not so comfortable last year. Coach may also be preparing Franzon in case we lose more than Cullity after this year from the D. Although I hope that they all take the cue from Matt Gilroy and stick around for their senior years.

too bad there is only one game this weekend
