Re: 2009-2010 Official Vermont Season Thread

Are you suggesting that some of the defensemen are going to leave early? That would be extremely shocking in my opinion. Who has left early in the last 10 years? Stalberg, Miles (???), and Sharp? Use the eye test, Stalberg and Sharp were NHL ready, no one in the defensive core gives me that impression.

Anyway, I am sure Sneddon would love to get the top 15 recruits that some of the other schools are, but is very happy getting middle of the road recruiting classes, which are full of kids that are going to stay four years. Look at BC/Minn/etc. and the constant exodus out of those programs after a year or two. We can compete on a national level because we have experienced players. We certainly aren't having success because we are the most skilled team in the country.

Talk about instant examples...we never even got to see him

From USCHO

Winger Kenny Ryan has left Boston College, coach Jerry York said Thursday.

Ryan is expected to join the Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League.

The move comes after Ryan played in two exhibition games with BC. The Eagles open the season Sunday at Vermont.

A second-round draft pick of the NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs this year, the 6-foot, 204-pound Ryan played two seasons with the U.S. National Team Development Program.

Or you could look at the last 3 years and see that Stalberg and Mitchell left early, 2 in 3 years. A lot depends on the situation, when you start recruiting NHL draftee's it depends to some extent on what the NHL team needs. An LA kings recruit may be heavily persuaded to leave early should the Kings Defense really suck. As UVM becomes a more competitive team and are able to garner higher end recruits it will start to lose some of them early. That trend has started in my opinion. UVM is not a BC or BU and they are not going to lose 2-3 players every year, but looking at the last 10 years isn't really an accurate representation. Gilligan gave up the last few years he was head coach and It took Sneddon a few years to re-establish the program and get some recruits in. Leaving early will become an expectation at UVM and not an rare occurrance. Should Miller or Medvec have a standout year they may leave. McCarthy could be expect to leave in 2-3 years. So losing at least one player next year and one the year after that is not unreasonable.

Re: 2009-2010 Official Vermont Season Thread

Nick has some special jealousy over UVM, just like some of the UML fans.

My post has nothing to do with UVM and what I think of them**.

It had to do with calling a poster out for posting nonsense.

**For the record, it would be a very logical statement to make by saying someone is jealous of a program that is far less decorated than their own, now would it? Do you also think Donald Trump is jealous of the homeless guys he passes by on his way from the door to his limo?

Re: 2009-2010 Official Vermont Season Thread

BC has now had, by my count, four early departures in three years. I wouldn't exactly call that an exodus, especially since one of them was a freshman who never played in a real game, and another was a discipline thing. It's nothing compared to the departures at some of the big WCHA programs. I don't know where you're getting that.

BTW, BC men's hockey's graduation rate is 87%. Compare that to Minnesota (50%), Wisconsin (72%), North Dakota (58%), ... and, uh, Vermont (78%).

Anyway, looking forward to a good game Sunday. I expect both of these teams to be in the NCAAs and near the top of the Hockey East standings. While it's too early to know anything about BC, I can tell from watching last week's Denver games on digital cable that Vermont is for real.

Re: 2009-2010 Official Vermont Season Thread

Anyone hear if McCarthy has medical clearance to play Sunday?

Any news on Milo's timeline to return?

I hate these one game weekends (and we have three in a row to endure)!!!

My conjecture or hypothesis on BC's only first place vote seems logical at best. For a team ranked in the double digits in every poll with only two exhibition games on the season, who else would have voted them as a first place team? Your knowledge is as good as mine, unless of course you are in direct contact with the voter (or the voter himself).
Not discounting the idea that BC has had many successes in years past, the consensus is that UVM will be the stronger team again this year.
btw, Donald Trump's building would never have homeless guys sitting out in front...his property managers would be on top of that one.

The Donald Trump analogy really doesn't make sense unless you are saying UVM is the equivilant of a homeless guy.

Is that what you are implying?

That is exactly what he's implying.

Re: 2009-2010 Official Vermont Season Thread

That is exactly what he's implying.

What would that make UML? The homeless guys mutt dog? Besides it would make more sense if he had said its like Donald Trump going bankrupt and walking by the homeless guy that just won the lottery.

On a more on topic note, I am interested to see how BC plays. Rankings in the polls are up there, Hendrickson has them pegged at 8th in HE, and then then managed a first place vote. So it seems to be up in the air.

Hey Nick how about providing some insight. How did Muse look in Exh games?

Re: 2009-2010 Official Vermont Season Thread

I repeat, BC was picked to finish 3rd in the league by the coaches, with a lot more points than UVM or UNH who were picked tied for 4th.

Hendrickson made a flyer pick - and I give him credit for doing that - but don't put too much cred into it.

Any UVM fans who think that BC is not a clear favorite to finish ahead of UVM over the balance of the season are just seriously overconfident after a split at DU (and may be sorely disappointed after they watch BC play this afternoon). DU's last two games did not look so impressive.

Sneddon is a great coach but BC still has WAY WAY WAY more talent than UVM does at this point.

Hendrickson has some sound reasoning, it maybe a gamble but it is on the part of the coaches as well. Hendrickson, simply sees Muse as being at last years level or worse and the Freshman to take a while to get into it. The coaches judging from their picks seem to believe that with the repaired hip Muse will return to freshman year form and this years class will step up big time. Only time will tell with Muse but BC's season hinges greatly on it. As for the freshman class, well we will all have to wait and see. Personally I think by the end of the season BC will be where they need to be, the question becomes how far of a hole they are in. The league is too competitive and BC, if Muse isn't stellar, could take some early season lumps. That will likely cost them an at large bid and they are forced to win the HE championship, which is totally possible, but not something I would want to have to rely on.

You are correct in that DU hasn't exactly played like a top 3-4 team, specifically giving up a lot of goals. That doesn't take away from UVM's Dmen or Goalie. It only would suggest that the goals put up by the offense are overinflated. Which if they were cut in half, I still like UVM's chances. :D

Hmmm, you're the only one who mentioned Lowell in this discussion. He hurled an insult your way, you weren't sure you understood it, I posted telling you that you were interpreting it correctly, and you bring up UML. But remember, we're the ones who have a problem.

Well acceptance is the first step.

If it makes you feel better I could switch it to NU or some other team that has had recent success but not such a grand history as BC. You could look at it as a compliment, but then you guys are a bit oversensitive.

Oh and next time a UVM poster posts on the UML thread and you cohorts throw a fit, you could at least stick up for us, you seem to rather enjoy posting over here.

BFP says he is playing today. Imagine the adrenaline rush he might be feeling knowing his 1st game is against the school and coach that thought he would be better off going to play a year of juniors instead of playing D1 hockey.

It will be great to get a look at him on the ice. Can't wait to see how he does. Just need to keep in mind this will be his first game, he hasn't had the benefit of 3 games under his belt.

Re: 2009-2010 Official Vermont Season Thread

You're getting warmer there, chief. Keep reaching for the stars.

It's too bad a hallowed history like BC is only good for expectations. When history translates into automatic wins we can talk again. Now go troll your own thread. As if the UML fans weren't bad enough we got Carmen and Nick. Hey you guys aren't married are you? Regardless you could always get together and have your own elephant walk party, Nick's dying to be a part of one.
