2009-2010 Official Vermont Season Thread : The Sequel

Re: 2009-2010 Official Vermont Season Thread : The Sequel

Then two at home against ME, which is a bit of a crapshoot, ME has been playing well and seemingly found a groove with a great holiday tourney. But then dropped two this weekend due at least in part to the loss of Foster.
There's no Foster on Maine's roster, Darling.

Re: 2009-2010 Official Vermont Season Thread : The Sequel

Let's hope UVM's offense picks up where it left off last Saturday and does not repeat the inept execution and lack of effort of last Friday

This has truly been a jekyl and hyde season for the Cats. Those were really impressive wins against Denver, Yale, UMD and BC and those were really brutal losses against MC, Maine, UMASS, UNH and NU. In fact, most of the losses were bad shellackings, not even close. The closest loss was last Friday versus NU. I guess that means they are either picking it up, or they are due for another shellacking.

In those wins this team has shown that they can play with and even dominate some of the best teams in the country. And in those losses they have proven they have very shaky goaltending and D at times and that the offense seems to respond to the D and goaltending. When D and goaltending are shaky the offense is not there either to win a shootout.

I hope they are close to shaking the inconsistency.

Interestingly, we have seen UMASS be dominant and shaky both also for stretches - but more week to week rather than night to night. Are they playing over their head in their good stretches and will they build on the momentum of the UML sweep last week. They certainly have a couple of stars in JMarcou and Wellman that UVM does not have currently, but can a full team effort offset the star power. I say it can if UVM moves their feeet and puts in a full effort.

You're forgetting, according to our friends from MA, Yale doesn't count as a win, much less an impressive win. ;)

Agreed, seems you can never tell which team will show up. They are either very good or very bad. I think we are all hoping for a strong second half run. On a positive note UVM seems to typically play well against ranked opponents on the road.

Re: 2009-2010 Official Vermont Season Thread : The Sequel

Cats dropped a fair distance in the PWR with BC and UMD losing and Denver tie on Friday night.

They need those teams to pick it up!

And, of course, they need to take of their own business also.

Mass is up to 6th in the PWR, so if the Cats do well this weekend we should be sitting pretty. Big if.

Re: 2009-2010 Official Vermont Season Thread : The Sequel

Lineups posted, 1st line scorer Jack Downing out. McCarthy takes his spot. Hope he's not hurt, it wasn't reported by sleuth Ted Ryan, that I saw, anyway. This team NEVER plays its best lineup. I'll wait for what will surely be a great explanation.

At least Wahs Stacey is in the lineup.Tonight anyway.

Re: 2009-2010 Official Vermont Season Thread : The Sequel

Downing is out 3 games due to a violation in the student-athlete's personal code of conduct, per Sneddon on the pre-game interview on WVMT. Wonder what he did???

Re: 2009-2010 Official Vermont Season Thread : The Sequel

Watched on the UMASS video feed last night. Disappointing effort by the Cats, the team just did not seem to have the cohesion necessary to generate enough scoring chances consistently through the game. That being said, in the last 5 minutes they did have a few great chances to tie the game, but they couldn't get it past Dainton. Madore did come up with some great saves that kept the team in the game.

It was funny hearing the UMASS radio feed, they were convinced that UVM was going to tie it up on some garbage goal late in the game. The team has had some late game success at UMASS in the last few years.

Somehow with the loss, UVM moved up to 12th in the PWR, tied with BC. However, the team continues to fade in the HE standings, and may be blowing a chance for home ice in the QFs if they don't start winning some conf. games.

Re: 2009-2010 Official Vermont Season Thread : The Sequel

Forget home ice. With 13 games left they would have to win 10 to get home ice. Not going to happen

they have a rough road to even finish in the top six at this point. And if they mess around too much who knows. Pc and mack are not bad

Re: 2009-2010 Official Vermont Season Thread : The Sequel

Good result for the Cats on Sunday - but not a particularly impressive showing at times in getting there. I though the Cats were kind of lethargic and showed poor execution in the first period, and the second was not much better. They played better in the third IMHO.

Irwin in particular looked awful in the first period. Milo did not have a great game either.

Madore obviously was good when tested. He made four or five very good saves. If he keeps that up it bodes well for the team.

According to ESPNU Umass outchanced UVM 12 to 8. They each hit one post.

UVM took way way way too may penalties. But they worked hard to kill all NINE of them. good work.

so, splits two weekends in a row. They need to find a way to step it up and start taking 3 or 4 points in some of the last six weekends if they are going to make a run at home ice.

I think they have the talent but they still have not put it together very well in league games. This one looks good on the scoreboard - but they did not look that impressive in the process.

Hopefully they can build on the defense and goaltending success and bring a little more transition offense next weekend.

They are 2-1 in HE season series' completed. They have to bring their A game next weekend versus Mack.

Re: 2009-2010 Official Vermont Season Thread : The Sequel

Good solid road win today. I watched the 3rd period and thought Vermont did a great job of not sitting back but attacking more even while protecting a lead. Madore was very good and had a awesome weekend giving up only 2 goals.

Funny how the pairwise works, now Vermont is tied for 10th just ahead of BC. I quess those 2 loses hurt them more than they hurt us.

Re: 2009-2010 Official Vermont Season Thread : The Sequel

At least they managed to split. Next weekend they need 3 out of 4 from Maine to keep where they are. The way everyone in HE is playing we are looking at the playoffs to figure out who is in and out.

Maine is coming to town next weekend.

Watched the game on ESPN-U...hard game to watch, too many penalties and no flow. Vermont is fortunate to have Madore rounding into form for the stretch run.

Was really curious with the Sneddon interview b/n 2nd and 3rd periods. Parphrasing...he said he is still looking for the leadership on this team? Regular season only has 6 more weekends - 12 more games. I have to wonder why he would say something like this, seems like a black mark on the 2 captains and 1 assistant captain. Most teams have a player vote to determine captains each year, wonder if Roloff, Miller and Cullity were picked this way or picked by the coaching staff? Maybe the BFP staff writer Ted Ryan can expand on this in his next blog posting.

There is a big difference between on-ice leadership which can come from any player and the off-ice which usually falls on the captains and seniors. I think Sneddon is looking for his older players(Stacey,Irwin,Milo,Medvec etc)as well as the captains to show more consistancy game to game.

Re: 2009-2010 Official Vermont Season Thread : The Sequel

In some of the interviews previously, Roloff has been mentioned as a "lead by example" type of captain. Also, Sneddon has repeatedly talked about the team taking responsibility for the team. I think what he is looking for is for the captains to lead by example, but to also hold the players accountable for their on ice performances. More vocal. Sneddon can rant and rave at them all he wants but sometimes it means a lot more coming from a line mate or the Miller/Roloff.

The game was rough, I think they were lucky to scrape by with a W. Madore was good and the PK was awesome. THe D held Wellman, Marcou, and Synor in check. The offense was horrible, the second goal was nice, but they were lucky to be up 2 goals on 8 shots. Madore and the D saved them the win.

2 against ME next week and 2 against PC the following weekend. Cats need to capitalize at home and then go to PC and play them like they are a #1 team. Should be able to manage 6-7 points.

Have to agree 100%. The passing was atrocious and the team looked slow. A lot had to due with the officiating with so many penalties. Neither team could get any rhythm with so many whistles. I never understand refs who want to control a game like that for no apparent reason.... The 3rd was a little better because there were fewer whistles.

Re: 2009-2010 Official Vermont Season Thread : The Sequel

Aside from Milo there is no one to really fear. Irwin has scored but there is no sense of fear/respect from the other teams (unlike you guys with Marcou and Wellman).

UVM has to rely on the D staying decent. The scoring is way too hit or miss for them. Good weekend for both sides at the end of the day. Aside from the penalties it was a matter of puck bounces not complete breakdowns.

As I watched the Wellman line I was thinking the exact same thing. UVM has no line, like most teams, where you are on the edge of your seat cause you know they are scorers and are the best players on the ice when out there and anything can happen.

I think this is why Melrose kept saying UVM was the less skilled team.....Not sure why he kept harping that as outside of the Wellman line I am not sure that carries from D and lines 2-4.
